Brocock Atomic XR … Tiny .22

I took delivery of this rifle on March 8 and have had some time to get acquainted with it. The sole purpose of purchasing this gun was to hunt pigeons, squirrels and other furry and feathered pests. Previously I have been using a RTI Prophet Compact and Taipan Veteran Shorty, both in .22 as well. The latter two are both excellent rifles and I don’t foresee getting rid of either.

I ordered the optional external hammer spring adjuster and I am glad I did. It’s certainly possible to tune this rifle without it but it would be a royal pain unscrewing the buffer tube, adjusting the HS, replacing the buffer tube, test firing and then repeat until the desired tune is achieved. With the external adjuster it’s a matter of turning the adjuster wheel to tune the HS to achieve your desired velocity. I am not a guy who keeps monkeying with a tune but rather finds the optimal tune for my projectile and then leaving it alone.

My hunting buddy uses a P-rod with great success. We hunt on a large industrialized dairy farm with 4 barns that are 1/4 mile long each. The barns used to have steel roofs and I could use about anything to hunt there without fear of punching a hole in the roof. Two years ago the owner replaced the roof with fiberglass panels at a cost of $850,000.00. Now we have to be very selective of our shots to make sure if we miss we don’t poke holes in the new $$$ roofing. The low velocity of the P-rod is the perfect barn tool, at least for these barns.

So, why did I buy the Atomic if the P-rod is so perfect? Well ………… I did buy a Prod a few months ago. After I unboxed it, I (tried) to air it up and the air blew right back out. Seems they forgot to put a check valve in the fill valve. Even though they included a test target and verified it held air for 72 hours which were both out right lies. I was unable to get a magazine into the rifle either. Sent the gun back to Crosman for warranty repair. They returned it 3 weeks later. Aired it up and shot a test target at 30’ and it looked like it was shot with a 12 gage shotgun. Still couldn’t get the magazine inserted so I short it single feeding. Found the shroud was loose so I tightened it up. Then discovered the barrel was loose. Tried to tighten the set screws and it kept moving the barrel rearward. Took the rifle back to the dealer and got a refund. Sorry Crosman but you have some serious QA issues to work out before I spend any more money with your company.

Fast forward … I started researching other small alternative rifles. The Atomic piqued my interest so I read all of the articles, reviews and YouTubes I could find. Then I pestered L.Leon here on AGN through PMs with lots of questions. I noticed his shot pretty well with CPHPs and that was another goal that I had was to find a rifle that would shoot those inexpensive pellets accurate enough for my pesting trips. My other rifles just wouldn’t shoot them accurately and I was tired of using expensive lead on pests.

I had been using my veteran Shorty with great success but lugging that around for 4 hours was tiring. It’s super accurate, quiets without an additional moderator, awesome trigger, great shot count, 250 bar fill (which I prefer) and as reliable as a rock. My Prophet Compact is a great rifle too, a tad lighter, about the same shot count as Shorty and a 300 bar fill which I am not a huge fan of.

I ordered the Atomic from AOA and about a week later it was delivered. I mounted a USO 3-12 scope, cleaned the pipe and proceeded to start feeding it lead. The Atomic is lighter than the other two and it’s a 250 bar fill which are two pluses for me. I experimented with several tunes but Steve Scally at AEAC said to tune any pellet at 700 FPS and he was spot on. I found the best accuracy with CPHPs at 709 with SD under 2. My groups shrank o a single ragged hole a5 25Y at that tune and that is where it’s now.

The atomic is not a bench gun but can be shot from a bench. Its best use IMO is in the field. It shoulders quickly, it’s light, short and maneuverable.

Now to the cons … there always is, right?
1) In stock form, it’s loud and not back yard friendly. I’ve tried a few LDCs and I found that the FX Donny FL is the quietest and most accurate at my current tune.
2) I was hoping the power adjuster (transfer port) would give me more shots than it did. #2 (medium) yielded about 3 more shots and #3 (low) yielded about the same before it fell off the regulator. Both #2 and #3 TP settings made the SD numbers go way up. #1 (high) had the lowest SD numbers.
3) We’ve been hunting in cold weather. I find the edges of the safety and trigger guard are quite sharp and made my fingers sore rather quickly. I would like to see Brocock soften these edges on future generations.
4) Air usage is quite good considering the air chamber is only 45cc’s. This translates to about 33 shots before it falls off the reg. We are hunting in a target rich environment but in a perfect world I’d like to see a slightly larger air tube and at least 50 shots.

I’ve got well over 1000 pills down the pipe now and have tried many different pellets to see if it has any preferences. It certainly doesn’t like JSB 13 and 14 grain, Gamo RedFires or Poly Mags. It shoots JSB 18s OK but has a preference for JSB 15.89 and AA16s being the most accurate. CPHPs with a 5.52 head size we’re almost as accurate as the 16s but still suffer from the WTH occasional random fliers.

Bottom line, this rifle is a keeper filling a niche that I have been searching for. It’s not a 100Y bench gun nor is it a fire breathing 😮‍💨 slug hurler. It’s a close range 50Y and in pest blaster that knows its job and does it quietly and quite well. Perhaps 🤔 it’s a rifle that you are looking for too? Only you know what you are looking for.

Almost!

Today I was playing with my BB guns at my burgeoning Arkansas home. Started with my peep sighted HW 30. The top two red dot targets were shot at 28 yards. I then tried to hit the 50 yard 4" steel plate. I nicked it low a couple, three times. Not my best.

I busted out my 177 HW50 "Squirrel Gun" I shot five at the middle red dot (28 yards). That went better. Then I went for the 50 yard steel. The first three landed very close to each other. I got excited/cocky and shanked the the fourth 1.625 low and right. Nothing to lose I shot two more. They landed nearly on the first three. It would have been almost half inch at fifty had I not shanked the fourth shot. Oh well there's five out of six at 50 that almost make MOA. Maybe tomorrow?

Oh after that I layed another ten at the 28 yard dot. So that's 15 on that middle dot.

Be well, and greetings from Arkansas.
Ron

Opticsplanet?

I'v bought a few scopes from them that showed in stock. Got them with no problems. I ordered a Vector Veyron on 3/14 that showed a ship date of 7-16 days? I have been checking & the ship date has now gone from 3/30 to 4/5,4/6,4/7 & now 4/10!! Are they one of those companies that just keep pushing the ship date back further? I don't mind waiting but i don't like being strung along.

Pellet vs slugs for hunting

Last night I say out waiting for some raccoons. I've always used Redesigns but last night used Knock Outs. Why? Just because.
I have the M3 tuned to where the KO's are literally one click right and one click down on the scope from the pellets.
I haven't shot a ton of raccoons, probably around 8-9 but all were head shots, all did the drop and twitch. Distance was between 35 and 50 yards.
Last night with the slugs I got my chance, quartering towards me I hit it right in the eye. It dropped, twitched, then got back up! But wobbly. Another shot to the head and it went down again but after a few seconds started dragging itself on it's side. A THIRD shot between the shoulders finally ended it.
I think I'm back to my domed pellets.

Heart Beat Pulse Getting in the way??

Ok so I have a VERY weird question not sure what it means or if this affects anyone else but it definitely affects my performance. Trying to figure out what I need to change.

I notice that I can feel my heartbeat while I'm resting my cheek on gun getting ready to shoot. I take a breath and release breath as I slowly engage first stage and squeeze the trigger. I dont grip the gun to hard or pess the butt up against my shoulder too hard. BUT my image is bouncing in the scope based on my heart beat. Am I crazy? Is it my bi-pod not absorbing? I've tried two bi-pods now same thing. It definitely affects me talking a shot. My resting heart rate is between 68-75 maybe a little hi but I'm totally relaxed. Anyone else have this and what did you do?

I'm shooting sitting down in a chair on a table using a Bi-Pod and a sandbag in the back. I can feel the pulse as I'm trying to zero in on my target.

RAW Micro Hunter Supposedly Starts Shipping Today?

Been following this one a bit and it looks like the day is here, eh, maybe?

Looking at the site it shows a ship date of 3/30/23, today, wonder how true that really is.

Also looks like a price drop from the early estimated retail, wish it was a little lower but.....

Anyway here is a link and hopefully we will see more "real world" information about this interesting little gun very soon 🤞

Mechanical 'Ability '

We use the phrase 'mechanical ability '. I've given this alot of contemplation. Ability seems to indicate more then just knowledge, or something anyone can learn. Similar to an ability to play music, or sing. Not everyone is born with equal abilities. My dear friend is a brilliant chef, a culinary artist, an ability to appreciate preparing food. For the life of him, he cannot fathom anything mechanical. He tries, but it is hopeless. The worm turns when I look in my mirror. I have the ability to burn a pan boiling water! I'm hopeless.
I sympathize with anyone confounded with these little mechanical marvels.
Keep a stiff upper lip!
Cheers

Air Venturi Refurbs

Hi folks, Pyramid has/had a batch of refurbished from Air Venturi. I bought an Avenger for $250-, an Eagle Claw carbine for 550, and an Eagle Claw full length for 550-. These are new rifles with no sign of wear or usage. My guess is these where returned due to difficulties encountered with initial fill. Hand pumps and little compressor's often will not seat the valves in new guns. They need a blast from a tank. Think mountiing a tubless tire on a rim only different.
The only refurbished guns I'd avoid are springers, in case someone has dry fired it. In my experience, refurbished guns are a great deal.

FX Impact , Panthera or jump ship and go Daystate Alpha Wolf

Which gun to buy?

I had a FX Wildcat .22 and after having it a few years sold it 3 years ago due to health issues. Money talks when bills add up. Now in the full swing of getting back into pcps and want to get another high end pcp. I do occasionally hunt but usually from a bench or blind. Usually squirels but the occasional coon. I keep saying I need .25 or .30 but realistically I took several trash pandas with the wildcat in .22 . But more I like accuracy and as a former benchrest shooter both rimfire and centerfire i punch a lot of paper. So I want a gun to do both. Most shots sub 100 yards but would be nice to open it up farther.

I was just going to get another Wildcat but am stuck on the impact and now the Panthera has peaked my interest. With that said I have been eyeballing the Daystate line and the built in chrono looks sweet but from some of the videos I seen they didn’t impress me with accuracy. Not sure if it was the shooter or they just don’t stack up against the FX. What your thoughts. If money was no object I would buy all 3 but that’s not in the cards. I want to buy once cry once and be happy. Well that’s not likely but we can try.

Notos loading issues

Recently bought a Notos as it seemed pretty popular here. It's honestly not a bad gun for the price. I have been having issues however since the first day. It will not reliably load pellets from the magazine. It jams badly. The first day I tried it, first pellet, went to chamber it, and it got stuck about a 1/3 of the way (lever forward). At this point I was unable to get the magazine to release, and sadly had to bench it for the rest of the outing until I could figure a way to get it out. I had to go buy a long enough .22 cleaning rod to try to get it to release by going through the front of the barrel. It took a lot of finagling, but finally got it out. Tried again and same result. Ordered a couple of Carm magazines and tried them with same result. Something seems like it's not aligning correctly. I can get the Carm mags to function if I "wiggle" them in all directions as I am trying to chamber the pellet. Not ideal at all. The single shot magazine functions fine. Nothing looks obviously wrong visually. I do notice that the bolt (?) when manually cycling ( the part that pushes the pellet) seems to drop down a little when first going forward, and wondering if this is the problem. When all the way back, I can wiggle it a bit if that makes sense. Any ideas? Trying to avoid having to send it back if it's an easy fix, I'm pretty good at repairing.
Not a great pic, but this is where I suspect the issue is, as the bolt drops just a hair once it first starts to protrude.

2023 USARB Nationals Cancelled

Unfortunately the USARB Nationals we had planned for the Whittington Center this August will not take place this year.
Given the USARB's very limited resources (staff and funding), the time, effort, expense and logistics of coordinating and holding a national event on the other side of the country are proving to be more than had been expected.

Even though fellow shooters like Mike Nisch and Joe Frederick graciously offered to help. We need to find
a location that is closer and more practical for regional shooters and dates that don't conflict with other large events (Pyramid Air Cup in Ohio is the same week).

We still hope to get more regional events schedules for this year but in the meantime, we welcome any suggestions, assistance and ideas from all USARB clubs and their members to help prepare for a National event in 2024.

Thanks for your understanding,

Sincerely,
Mark
