Long range big bore

Something i have always wondered about and havent been able to test yet, you can see online firearms like a 458 socom shooting subsonic 600 yards plus for deer hunting and dropping deer on the spot.

Wouldnt this be possible for a big bore airgun? People shoot subsonic 457 300gr projectiles accurately long rang at 800 fps from powder burners, whats the difference for an airgun? Is it just a quality issue?
What reason would essentially the same projectile going the same speed be accurate with powder caused expanding gas and not behave the same for hpa?

PCP for experiment

Hey all, it’s been years since I’ve been on here but I have a serious question. I’ve been interested in Airgunning since I was like 10, (now 21) I was nearly killed in a house fire last year and lose my right hand plus the majority of the functionality in my left. Unfortunately my dreams of buying a nice pcp once I had “adult money” really seemed out the window since my accident up to today. I think I might have a solution though, if I work with my prosthetics guy and the founder of one tech company, I believe I can design something that would allow me to shoot again. I will need a pcp to get started on this project so that I might start a prototype for a contraption that will allow me to pull the trigger. Obviously I don’t want to spend too much for the event that this might not succeed. I’ve been out of the loop since Ted stopped posting regularly, so my question is what options do I have for a decently accurate gun. I’d be open to something pre owned as well, but I don’t know where to find that sort of thing. I was always a big fan of fx but I really don’t know who makes the best stuff these days. My dream since I was a little kid was to become a consistent sub moa shooter and even with no hands I’m still trying to make it a reality. Tia

1st 100y Experience

Am I a cool kid now?🤣
It was NOT easy.
Setup the 100 yard first; nice trek🥴
Put an old beer can I found nearby on a branch to hold it in place.
Setup the old spinners with some fresh white tape for visibility sake.
And a shotgun hull I found on a twig.
Took the newer black spinners to the usual 50.
Found some more debris for targeting.
A red and a green plastic bottle cap.
The snowpeak; I am still somewhat getting used to(I keep changing the accessories)
She did fine at 50 after I got comfy.
The Lothar.....ooohhhh👀
What a BEAST!!🤯
50 YARDS WAS PRETTY MUCH NOTHING!
And the shot count🥴
After 75 yards....
Whole new ball game...however in the joy of getting ready to go to the range...I had forgotten to grab the Lothar's preferred pellets🤦‍♂️
I grabbed my closest option.
Benjamin 10.5g HP
It took some dosing for sure.
But I was able to get some dings in and was able to slay that old beer can😆
The shotgun hulls stood no chance as well🥰
Stayed out there a good 6 hours just plinking and enjoying the weather🤗
Plenty of pest birds around to try for.
But I opted to wait for a meal.
2 pairs of ECD at different intervals. I made sure to take out the female first bc the males seemed frisky; so I knew they would wait and not fly away for the downed female; thinking it was playing coy. They both did, both times. Got 4💪
Time to go make dinner!🤗

Things that cause inaccuracies on the FX Chronograph - Experiments and Results

Some of my conversations with @Ballisticboy have been enlightening and made me want to experiment with the FX Chronograph to see what causes it to give erroneous results. I did three shots each with each of the 21 experiments to see what makes the Chronograph read incorrectly. Here are the basic results:
ThingsThatCauseInaccuraciesOnTheFXChronograph_2023-04-18.jpg

Here is some pictures of how I did the tests:
Test #1 - Baseline - 1/4" below the moderator and even with the muzzle:
20230418_145221.jpg

Here is test #2 with the Chronograph pulled toward the gun by 2":
20230418_145548.jpg

Here is test #3 with the Chronograph pulled back 8":

Here is test #4, where the Chronograph is moved 2" away from the Muzzle:

Here is test #5, where the Chronograph is 8" away from the Muzzle:

Here is Test #6, where the Chronograph is 2" below the barrel:
20230418_150456.jpg

This is test #7 is where the Chronograph is 8" below the barrel:
20230418_150658.jpg

Here is test #8, that is supposed to be about 6 degrees, but is actually about 8 degrees:
20230418_151108.jpg

Here is test #9, where the Chronograph is facing down by 11 Degrees, but in this experiment, we are closer to 14 Degrees:
20230418_151438.jpg

This is test #10, where we are angled downward by about 23 degrees:
20230418_151648.jpg

Test #11 is where we are angled down by 45 degrees. This is actually about 43 degrees:
20230418_152400.jpg

It turned out that it was facing the table, so I wasn't that hopeful that I was going to get a reading. I didn't, but here is how it looked for the first shot:
20230418_152417.jpg

I moved it out to the edge for the next two shots, and it didn't read any of them:
20230418_152519.jpg

This is Test #12, where the Chronograph is facing 6 degrees to the right:
20230418_152730.jpg

Here is Test #13, where the Chronograph is facing 11 degrees to the right:
20230418_152924.jpg

Here is Test #14, where the Chronograph is turned 23 Degrees to the right:
20230418_153032.jpg

Here is Test #15, where the Chronograph is facing 45 degrees to the right:
20230418_153204.jpg

For Tests 16-19, the setup looked like this. I used a REALLY BIG piece of cardboard to make sure that I wasn't passing "reflections" around the side:
20230418_172516.jpg

Something else to note about this picture is that I put boards under the back side of the step-ladder so that the plane of the target was as close to 90 degrees to the muzzle as possible.

Finally, my last couple tests were like this, with the box covering the end of the barrel while I was testing:
20230418_173518.jpg

I was rather surprised by the consistency of these results. Obviously when it gets off by 45 degrees, it stops working, but that is to be expected. I must say that I was surprised that it was able to read sometimes when the cardboard was only 3" from the muzzle. What are your thoughts about the results of this experiment??

Cheers!

Jonathan

What If

What if you could build the unicorn PCP what would it be? What kind of stock would it have what kind of ammo whould it shoot? What would be the perfect spec?

Im assuming thats why so many people have so many diffdent PCP's because there is never one gun that is best at everything. Each gun is designed to be very specific for its function. I guess if you have a general gun it would just be mediocre at everything and not great at anything.

10.3 gems i am missing

Looking for 10.3~g in .177
Have a few, wondering what others are to be had😅
My Lothar likes 10.~s🤷‍♂️🤗
*I stated a while back that i had nothing from FX.🤦‍♂️forgot that @JohnTaylor blessed me with the FX pellets pictured 🥴🎩🤙

FX Panthera - glad I purchased it…..

494F1DFC-728D-497A-A432-C7F6582CD42B.jpeg
Those of you that follow my posts know that I am fortunate to own several high quality air rifles.

I was somewhat on the fence about ordering a Panthera, but now that I have had it for 6 weeks or so, I am really glad I purchased it.

The 700mm .22 is tuned for the ZAN 30.5 Gr slug shooting at 1060 fps and if I do my part, it strikes where I am aiming every time.

Because I like to do my set-up on my indoor range at 18 yards (my close zero), the far zero is 76 yards, translating to a 3” total arc from 18 to 101 yards. I can get a full 18 shot mag through before it drops off the reg now set at 162. For those interested, I have the Macro adjuster set at 23 and the Micro at 3 1/2.

While one wouldn’t want to carry it through the woods (I have it fully weighted) you wouldn’t have to. Find a stump to set it on and any squirrel within 125 yards that passes through the lense of the Sightron 10-50x60 scope should be nearly automatically dead.

And while really long with the added moderator, it is extremely quiet for the power output as one mostly hears only the hammer strike.

A very special purpose rifle indeed, but deserving of a space in many airgun enthusiast’s collection.

Compressors  NLA (2) Hill Pumps

$100 + Shipping (1) Hill MK4 and (1) Hill MK3. Both have Dry Pac Systems and Foster quick disconnects on end of hose. I Got a tank and do not use these. I am selling as if they need resealing. I actually believe one is fine and the other I put a reseal kit in but it does not seem to work as I likely needed to secure something I did not. Anyway, if you can work on pumps I believe you will just need to readjust one and purchase a reseal kit for the other. If you want to buy let me know and I'll get a price on shipping so you can decide.

Anyone heard from BOSK lately?

I had talked with BOSK a few times on the forums and texted back and forth many times over the last couple years. But recently I have not been able to contact him. Does anyone have any updates on him? I bought a few things from Bosk and we physically met at EBR. I know Jim/Sarge was selling off his place in line for a Thomas rifle because of health issues. I'm not feeling good about not getting ahold of him. He is a great human being! Any info is appreciated good or bad.
Thx

AGT Vulcan 3 in .22 with slugs

A couple months ago @zx10wall approached me with a proposition: He'd lend me a Vulcan 3 set up to shoot slugs, if I was interested in competing with it at one of our local Xtreme Field Target matches here in Arizona. Included in that discussion was how slugs don't excite me much, and he thought this just might change my mind about them. I agreed to the very generous offer of a trial run with the V3.

The reason I'm not generally interested in slugs is because I have had so many poor and/or mediocre experiences with them. There have been a few standouts come through, but most have not been impressive. Of note, my prior slug experiences have all been with .22 or .177 and only up to about 55-60fpe.

The V3 sent by Derrick:
V3.jpg

He upgraded the bottle to 700ccs.

Reg pressure of 170 BAR, pushing the 0.218" 34grain dish based Varmint Knockers to 1000fps for about 75fpe. All the shots I've taken over a chrono have been 995-1005 so pretty much single digit spreads.
varmint knockers.jpg

Actual point of impacts from 20-100 yards are matching Strelok pretty closely using a BC of 0.120, so these slugs are close to that when going 1000fps.

I've only had 3 small shooting sessions with it but I've been impressed with accuracy each of those times. The most recent was this morning. Worked through 20-100 yards in 5 yard increments. Here are the pellet traps at probably about 40, 45, and 50 yards.
buckets.jpg

We're under a wind advisory right now, supposed to really pick up this afternoon. For the time I was shooting, NWS recorded 18-20mph sustained winds and gusts up to 30mph at their weather station about 3 miles away from home. And I believe I had every bit of that here at my house. Winds were left to right, quartering out from about 7 oclock, more of a tailwind than anything.

Here are all three buckets, shots are from 20-100 yards, buckets at all different rotations as I worked my way out to 100 yards. Shots were mostly getting pushed to the right just a bit, but that can't be seen in the groups since the buckets were never in the same orientation from group to group. Circles are 1 and 3/8 inches. Note the left-most paper-top row, second from left was the first attempt at 95 yards. Took me a minute to figure out I was impacting low but I'd forgotten to refill at 170 bar. Went and topped off and came back and shot the top, left target, also at 95 yards, and it was looking much better. Three of those shots at 95 yards are within 1/2 an inch. The other thing to note is the MOA challenge coin in the middle bucket. That was 5 shots at 100 yards, from bucket and sticks. Not quite covered by the coin, but almost, so maybe 1.2ish MOA, in 20-30mph winds, from bucket and sticks. Yeah, I'm impressed. Finally, kinda interesting to look at the right bucket and see the lead streaks from where a pellet got pushed right and hit the tip of the nail and exploded.
buckets1.jpg

And a photo of that group under the moa coin. I'm assuming they're slightly higher than previous dope b/c of the tailwind.
100 yard group.jpg

After the above I placed one of the buckets at 35 yards and shot one magazine, offhand. 10 of the 12 shots were within the 1 and 3/8" circle. Seems the platform is a bit easier to shoot offhand than the dear to me Veterans, and maybe just a bit harder to shoot than the Ghost.

So, seems that somewhere above 60fpe and a BC greater than about 0.07, the slugs can indeed pull away from the pellets. Derrick was right, this gun changed my mind about slugs. From my experience, it all comes to breaking that threshold, below that, and a guy might as well shoot .22 Monster RDs or the .25 King Heavies since they'll outperform slugs. BUT, get over 60-65fpe, and there just might be something to all this slug hype.

If I was interested in a dedicated slug shooter, the V3 in .22, set up by Derrick as described above, would be at the top of the list.

(Hoping to shoot this gun at the Xtreme Field Target match this weekend. Looking like I might be the only slugger but I'll have fun in my class of one. I'll report back how the V3 ends up doing at the match).

What is your standard for accuracy?

I dont actually have a standard for what I consider accurate , I think its more on a rifle to rifle basis, what is this rifle used for, what is acceptable , etc .... what do you consider accurate? For my hunting rifles its first shot accuracy, for my plinkers its a whole mag in a dime at 50 yards... 100 yards id love every group to be MOA but realistically for me and my current level of shooting something close to MOA is accurate.

People have asked me about how certain rifles of mine are performing... and Ive noticed a lot of people lately are EXPERT SNIPERS ... with their mouths, not their airguns.

I recently got "Wow, so the accuracy really isn't there" in regards to shooting 1.25" - 1.5" 20 (YES TWENTY) shot groups at 100 with slugs, fired from an airgun I had less than an hour behind off a poop table lol.... excuse me? I don't normally get bugged by this sort of thing but when looking through posts from the people saying things like this only to find they are sub 50 yard shooters and base everything off 30 yard groups I just have to laugh.

Watching too much youtube? lol

Help with perspective please: What are realistic expectations for slug groups?

I do my tuning and testing at 40 yards. Figure that is far enough to see what is happening but not too far that I'm negatively impacting the results. I know what to expect with pellets and when the tune is as good as it's going to be.

I'm getting into slugs and would appreciate comments on what would be realistic group size expectations. At the moment the best groups are about 1/2" at 40 yards.
Also, is 40 yards a good distance for tuning?

Thanks!

Results  OKCGC Field Target match 4/15/2023 Results

1681822371777.jpeg

1681822392816.png

The OKCG Field Target match started off a little bit on the windy side. But that did not last long. We started the match at 10:00 am and then the wind came up much harder than was predicted. We set the Troyer down a couple of notches because of what the wind speed would be for that day. Nope, it came in on us like a paper fan and went up like it was out of a jet! Gusts were up to at least 25+ mph and felt like it was coming from a helicopter. We shoot in a hub, like that of a wagon wheel the spokes are our lanes. Shooting in the woods gives the shooter even more to contend with!!
We shoot at the Archery range, and they are having an ASA Archery state qualifier match in May. The ASA folks cut the lanes like a tunnel, which compounded the wind even more. I think it made it more interesting, keeps the shooters on their game!
Enough with this match directors crying, lol. It’s all about the shooters that come to the OKCGC range to shoot and have a great time!
We had 22 shooters come out today. Great to see everyone!

We set out 30 targets in 15 lanes for a 60-round match. We paired them up by drawing chips, sent them to their assigned lanes and yelled out “WE ARE HOT”. They began blasting away and knocking down those pesky animal targets with so many different KZ sizes!!!

Rick Cuccio sure loves his FX Royale as he did an outstanding job shooting a 55 in this wind to take 1st place with a 55.
Thom Davies took the 2nd spot with a 53. Thom has been on fire this year, not only at OKCGC but at different FT events around the south.
In 3rd place was Mark Welker shooting a 50!

OKCGC had 3 Springers come out.
Stan Miller took the Top spot with a 25, His son Richard Miller was 2nd with a 23 and Dawson was DNF after his issue with his rifle. I like to see Springers show up.

Stan K. was the only show for WFTF class and shot a nice 45! He drives 5 hours to get to our range. Thank you, Stan.

Bob Benda brought out two of his grand kids to shoot in our Junior class. One in HFT pcp the other in HFT Springer. Anya, she shot a very nice 45 in PCP and Dawson shot his Springer but ended up with a DNF. He had dropped his gun and his pellets were not going where they should have hit. Sorry Dawson for that to happen. You will get it straightened out next time buddy, we all are pulling for you and glad you come out.

I must mention the Cajun GP match. There were 5 Okies shooters in the Hunter class at the Cajuns. Having 5 Okies out of 34 entries makes Oklahoma proud.
Rick C was 5th. Thom D 12th. Mark W. 20th. Curtis N. 21st and Leon O’. 27th. Congratulations you guys!

I want to say thank you to all that help with these matches, it could not come off as great without Y’all!
See you next month!!
Here is a link to the Air gun Shoot match tracker. Thanks to Scott Cotton at Arlington Sportsmans club for developing the website. And to Curtis for putting the data into it.
All you need to do is click on a name to see all the data. Pretty cool

Weihrauch HW55

Saw an HW55 sell at auction recently for 735.00. Nothing special about it...didn't even have sites. They are getting more expensive and more difficult to acquire. It's easy to understand why.
To cock it requires very little effort. To shoot it well requires you to do your part because it surely does its part. It's like driving a high end automobile. You can feel the quality with every motion. From flipping the lock latch and pulling the barrel down with ease til it clicks to set, then close it up like a bank vault. All while looking oh so refined.
I enjoyed an afternoon on my range with my 55 today thanks to seeing that auction. It's a great old rifle with a 4 digit serial number. Always brings a smile to my face.

Looking for some advice from the pros....

When zeroing a rifle at 50 yards, knowing youll be shooting at 100.... When shooting at 50 yards its hole in hole dead center of the reticle.... same at 75 but with a little hold over, however at 100 you need to hold slightly left for what I am assuming is "spin drift" (forgive me, I am still green) ....

Do you dial a little to accommodate this at 75 then check again at 100 and 50? Me thinking like this is just thinking that the changes @ 75 wont be so drastic it would affect 50 much but would make it easier at 100...

Sorry if terminology is off, I am still learning to shoot like the pros.
