My average 170 yards group

20240915_180227.jpg

First . 22 cal ( rats )

First, sorry for asking because im sure its asked quite alot. The rat problem in my backyard has been getting worse, and since the traps aren't working well I might as well take matters into my own hands.

Looking to spend up to 200ish. I shoot alot of rifles, but never air guns and I don't hunt. The max is like 25 yards. Maybe I'll even put targets out. Maybe this will turn into a new hobby!

I was looking at the barra 1200g dual break. I saw a few good videso on it. ( I realy like the camo version )

Is there anything else worth taking a look at for that price point?

thanks

My tomato thief offed himself

So I've had a tomato raider hitting my garden at night. I knew the squirrels weren't doing it because the tomatoes would be on the ground and almost totally eaten. Coons don't typically go for maters being too acidic, but these guys love them.

So little back story. Power went out Saturday night, I got woke up around midnight to a loud pop from the transformer. I reported the outage and fell back asleep. Next morning everything was kosher.

I went out to check the hens and garden, all was well. I go out this morning and I noticed the smell of death. I figured it was a bird or something I had blasted and didn't recover. Nope, it was this dude....

1000009623.jpg

He was laying a couple feet away from the bottom of my power pole where the x former sits on top. Apparently he grounded out the wire leads and sent himself to possum heaven.

Key take away, my tomatoes didn't get bothered the last 2 nights, and 2 day old dead possum smells very bad!

Brocock/BRK  Happy New Rifle Day!

After about six months of research and watching youtube until my eyes bled I finally "pulled the trigger" on a new rifle. I have it set to 20 fpe with the white spring and the hammer spring all the way to minimum. Really liking the shot count. Likes any pellet as long it is a JSB.

FX Factory Faux Pas

I ordered aa .30 Cal 600mm barrel kit for my new M4. It arrived on Friday and I tested it out yesterday. I was shocked when I couldn't even hit a 12 x 18 target at 35 yards! When I went to clean the barrel, thinking maybe that was the issue, I had a hard time getting the patch worm to feed through the barrel when inserted from the breach end. I removed the moderator adapter and this is what fell out of the end of the barrel.

IMG_4723.jpgIMG_4725.jpg

I cleaned the barrel and put the adapter back on and went to shoot it at 10 yards. This is the shot pattern I was getting.

IMG_4729.jpg

I was shooting the 44 grain JSB Hades pellets and noticed what appeared to be fragments of pellets hitting the target. I then removed the adapter again and this is what fell out of the end of the barrel.

IMG_4732.jpg

I called the Vendor I purchased it from and after discussing various possibilities, he had me remove the adapter and shoot it again, it stacked pellets at 10 yards. So we measured the ID of the adapter and it was only 6.2mm! Seems FX made a major Faux Pas during assembly and put the wrong adapter on this barrel and it was literally shredding the pellets! A .25 cal pellet is 6.35 in diameter and a .30 cal pellet is 7.35mm, so I can only assume this adapter was probably meant to go on a .22 caliber barrel. In any event, the Vendor is contacting FX and sending me the correct adapter. The Vendor said they don't typically open and inspect barrel kits before shipping them to customers. He said this was the first time he had ever encountered this and was really surprised. So, just an FYI, if you get an FX Barrel that's shooting a shotgun pattern at 10 yards, check to ensure the correct adapter was installed at the factory!

Homemade PCP receiver

After my recent horrible experience with FX Dreamline POI shift issues I decided to build a receiver which I could clamp in a bench vise, then insert the FX barrel assembly so that I could see what's up with these liner/shroud set up's (ie. why the annoying POI shifts) independent of the rest of the FX rifle & the shooter. Anyhoo, in the meantime I figured out what the issue at the heart of the FX Dreamline accuracy is: it has no barrel. To make this gun shoot, the .177 version anyway, is as simple as throwing the stock straw/noodle/liner or whatever you call it in the trash, along with the flimsy little wagon wheels spacers & the shroud. Then, buy a real barrel & have someone machine it for you so it fits the FX receiver, problem solved!!!
I had already started machining my homemade receiver though so I thought I'd finish it up & post some progress. Caution: I am not a machinist by any standards! I am a tinkerer, go ahead & criticize my methods & machining standards all you want, I am always willing to learn!

I grabbed a piece of 6061 billet & drilled two holes all the way through with a long 1/4" drill bit from the hardware store:
tempImagesmYKCJ.jpg

Enlarged & reamed top hole for an 18" Crossman barrel that I have lying around:
tempImageeFBaiH.jpg

Removed some material ahead of the lower hole so the valve could fit in there;
tempImage7mUIQy.jpg

Used a boring bar to enlarge bottom hole to .788" to accept valve:

tempImageghIt8c.jpg

Test fit el-cheapo Amazon valve. Right after I bought this I saw one in Fleabay that comes with a regulator. I may upgrade to that if this receiver turn out ok, the front parts are the same:
tempImage5ZM575.jpg

Plunging the transfer port, I used an end mill since I was drilling through the barrel channel, drill bit likely would've walked:
tempImagejnl6ow.jpg

Drilled & tapped some holes for a pic rail, you know, in case we wanna scope this sucker. Machinists may scorn me for tapping with the mill: I'm lazy ok, if it's faster I'm doin' it:

Scope rail holes & transfer port plug tapped:

I always consult my meticulous technical drawings before I cut:

Kral Arms  Tuning Unregulated PCP - Running out of Hammer Spring Adjustment

I have a Reximex Daystar. (Same as KRAL as Same Manufacturer) Im trying to tune it to get the proper bell curve, but I am runing out of Hammer Spring Adjustment. Im almost all the way in on the screw and the FPS seems to be still going up. ITs a 250 BAR fill and at Hammer Spring almost at max I start around 750 FPS and will go up to about 800 at 210/200 BAR, which is what I want.. (~800)

I assume I need to get a stiffer Hammer Spring?

From my understanding is you want to back off the Hammer Spring once you hit a plateau and I can't seem to hit it at 200+ BAR (Plateau)

From my understanding with an unregulated PCP at higher fill pressures the hammer is fighting the bottle pressure so FPS is lower at higher FILL pressure..

There is a regulator from Huma-Air made for this rifle so I am wondering if thats the best course of action.. If I have to figure out a proper stiffer spring I might as well just install a regulator.

Maybe I am missing something obvious..

I should add this is 0.25 CAL and I am tuning for the JSP Exact 25.5 grain. Rifle is rated for 850 FPS according to manufacturer specs at that grain / Caliber. So I am in the range for sure, but not sure if the hammer spring should be maxed to get to that number.

Thanks
Mike

HW/Weihrauch  20 cal pellets and trajectory myths

I started to type this as a response to another thread about pellets for a 20 cal Hw95N. Nice rifle btw. Anyways I figured it was worth a wider audience.

11.42 FTTs
13.58 Barracuda
13.73 Exacts

PS you may find rebranded versions of the three I listed above (Referring to the other thread). Use the pellet weights as your guide line. Also if you're looking for the flat trajectory everyone expects from a 20 cal Weihrauch stay with the 11.42 FTTs. You should be around 800 fps with them. They are usually the highest or sometimes tied with the 13.73s for the highest energy in most Weihrauchs. The Hw90 being the exception. I haven't noticed much difference in accuracy between the two. Best accuracy can flip flop between tin lot numbers.

If you're going for longer distances (>50 yards) the 13.73 JSBs have an BC edge over the FTTs.

JSBs 13.73 = 0.0373
FTTs 11.42 = 0.0274

These are actual numbers. Published data is incorrect. Wildly incorrect on the FTTs.
My numbers were done using my R1 and two matched chronographs set 47 yards apart.

I recommend 20 cals if you're looking for something different and or accuracy from your Weihrauch. Other than the the 11.42 FTTs the 20s aren't any flatter than 22s. They both shoot low 700s. The reason is the larger 22 bore diameter generally adds about a pound of energy from the same rifle. That extra pound will push standard weight 22 lead pellets as fast as the 20 caliber will 13.58s and 13.73s. The BC between the 20 and 22 is close enough it's a wash. So the flatter 20 caliber argument is bunk unless you use the FTTs. Then you give up BC at longer distances. This is where switching to 13.73 JSBs puts you in the same trajectory as a 22.

Accuracy, I've never seen a Weihrauch 20 that wasn't accurate. Usually they are stupid accurate. I can't say the same about Weihrauch 22s. Most are good to great. I have seen a couple that weren't. Weihrauch seems to put more care in their 20 caliber barrels. They're certainly more expensive than the others.

Weihrauch 22 accuracy is normally very good to great. I don't want people telling me I'm giving 22 Weihrauchs a bad rap. Its just I've seen a few oversized bores that makes them pellet picky. Usually 5.54 or 5.55 head FTTs straightens them right out.

In the end 20 cals are a safe bet for accuracy at the expense of pellet choices. The 22 cals are just as flat and make more energy with a wider selection of easier to find pellets. That's unless you get an oversized bore then your choices will be as limited as the 20 cal.

My source of information is from tuning and testing several 20 and 22 cal Weihrauchs over the years. I also own four Hw95 family guns in three calibers.
Hw95 177 cal
R9 SE 20 cal
Hw98 20 cal
Hw95 Field Pro 22 cal
Every one of these guns has something great about them. There's no bad calibers for them. The 95 platform is a great platform.

I also have a R1 that has worn 177, (2) 20 and 22 caliber barrels since I've owned it. I've extensively tested the difference in manners and output between all three calibers. I still have a 20 caliber barrel for it but like it best in 22.

I'd say I have a pretty good cross section of experience to back my pragmatic statements here. I know someone will take offense to something I've said because they like this or that. That's their perogative. I'm just providing general facts and experiences for people to use as they wish.

HTH
Be well

PCP Rifle  NLA $200 obo: Modded Benjamin discovery wth accessories

I have a Benjamin discovery I would like to sell. The gun has been modified. It will come as pictured. It has a regulated bottle up front with a magnum airpower adapter. A Benjamin marauder trigger with a homemade trigger guard. The valve has been ported and a marauder valve stem added. It has a barska level 1.5-6-44 scope. It will come with the original air tube and all the included accessories like the gauge port and fill adapter, will also come with 3 magnum airpower valve screws. The butt plug I replaced with one I made to get an adjustable spring but it's not the best and the 2 screws that are holding it in place a stripped as well. It stays in place but would recommend replacing both.
Looking to get $200 obo.
Let me know if you have any questions.
My email is
[email protected]

Edited: also included is a used Benjamin hand pump.
