New PCP barrel cleaning. Are they all this grimy?

Got snowed in here in North West Kansas, and have been dealing with clearing and tractor issues. Back onto playing with my new Zelos.

I started my initial clean on the barrel using Ballistol. I was kinda shocked at the level of grime on the first patch I pulled. Holy cow. In 50 years of cleaning rifles, I've never seen a new barrel be this nasty.

Is this common for a brand new barrel? Top left was patch 1. Each patch one pull until patch 8, then doing 2-3 pulls. wish I could figure out how to pull a brush through this barrel. Heading back downstairs to pull some more patches.

Other  Do I need a .177?

Probably not but I want one! I hoped to justify it by using the price of pellets but the maths just do not work out. Quieter? No again. My Zelos in .25 is so quiet that it sucks in sound from other pellet rifles going off in the area and makes them quieter. The only justification I have is that my .25 is tearing up the cheap spinner targets I have, and that's enough for me!

So, can you recommend a PCP .177 that is inexpensive and has a high shot count?

Skout  My Experience with a Skout Epoch and a Submoa barrel

When i first heard about a new company called "SubMoa" making rifle barrels, it definitely caught my attention. I saw the pictures of fancy machinery, computers and stacks of materials. I thought how cool this is. Looking deeper into the subject, i found the price. It is a premium price. However, as you read on, i found that this premium price lacked any benefit to my shooting. I will go through my initial observation, internal inspection, and finally shooting targets at 50 and 100 yards. I am not a professional, i just like to shoot, and this is what i found.

INITIAL OBSERVATIONS

When I got the barrel, the 1st thing you notice is how much it weighs. It is HEAVY! I do not have a scale, but have seen the weight at around 9lbs, which doubles the weight of my Epoch. In fact, it was too heavy for my front rest's joystick control and made it sink.
2nd was the fact that the barrel was made from carbon steel...not stainless or chrome-moly..plain,rusting carbon steel. Skout has applied a coating to the outside of the barrels to prevent corrosion. At the price, these should be stainless 416 steel or better
3rd observation was how loud this barrel shoots! It sounds like there isn't a suppressor on the barrel when firing, and VERY loud if the supressor is removed. While the OEM supressor does a decent job, it is not that effective to quiet the bark in this case.
4th was on how thick the barrel is. Skout includes an additional locking collar to accomodate the extra thickness of this barrel. It is a one screw replacement of the collar..not at all dificult.
5th was the very strange ribbing i see down the barrel. Like the barrel was locked to tight in a vice and made an indentation. these are in increments down the length. I cannot say if this effect the overall performance of the barrel, but it seems like lack of finishing.

WHAT"S IN THE BORE

I wanted to know what was going on inside this barrel, so i pushed some pellets through the barrel using a rotating bore rod. The barrel was cleaned. When i looked at the pellets, i saw inconsistencies. One side of the pellet engraved wel, but on the flip side, it was different
IMG_0498.jpegIMG_0499.jpeg
After about 50 shots, I ran another pellet down the barrel…no cleaning
IMG_0487.jpeg
notice the bottom of the skirt..how ragged in texture
Why was it so torn up?
I went out and purchased a bore scope to take a look
The breech seemed normalsubmoa breech.jpg
as i went in further into the barrel, i found these marks on the lands
submoa v marks.jpgsubmoa x marks.jpg
Not only do i see tooling marks on the lands, the grooves look to have a tree bark texture..not at all smooth

LETS GET TO SHOOTING

All the test shots were done at an indoor range. I am using a AR 250 front rest with Edgewood rear bags for these test. The rifle was cleaned when a new pellet was used.
I did testing with the 3 most popular pellets being used; JSB MRD deep-AEA 25.39g-JTS 22.07g
I did 10 consecutive 5 shot groups on a N50 target

JSB MRD DEEP AT 50 YARDS
these were taken straight from the tin, which i now realize was a mistake made by me. I was unable to tell if the shot was bad from the barrel or the pellet. The MRD's were shot at 935-940 fps i was running a S.D of 2.8
IMG_0502.jpeg

AEA 25.39g AT 50 YARDS
The pellets were shot straight from the tin. The consistency of weight leads to a better result with these pellets. Was able to barely get under MOA. The groups were tight, but the poi did wander a bit. I was zero'd on the bullseye. The AEA were shot at 935-940 fps and had a S.D of 2.8 the size of the groups varied from .30 to .52 These worked the best
IMG_0500.jpeg

JTS 22.07g AT 50 YARDS

. These did well in grouping, but the POI did wander. the size of the groups varied from.34 to .64. Not what i expected from these pellets, i thought they would perform better.
Shots are zero'd on the bullseye.
IMG_0501.jpeg

100 YARD SHOTS
Here is where it all falls apart
I cleaned the barrel for each pellet, followed up with a lead in of 5 shots
I took 10 consecutive shots at the target and then to another 10 on the next target. I did not center the shots to group at the bullseye .. just shot for groups

JSB MRD DEEP AT 100 YARDS
learning from my mistake of not weighing the JSB's, i sorted a batch of pellets to use at 100yards. Let's be honest, who doesn't sort for a 100 yard competition shoot?
The pellets went flying at 935-940 fps with a S.D of 2.9.
IMG_0503.jpeg
1st tsrget ctc = 2.21 inches 2nd target ctc 2.4 inches

AEA AT 100 YARDS
These showed less percission than the JSB, but if you take a close look at the top of the target sheet, you will see several shots off the paper. These were part of the group. While there was a tight group forming, it did not hold.
IMG_0504.jpeg
ctc on target 1=4.45 ctc on target 2 = 3.44

JTS AT 100 YARDS
Currently, these pellets are my favorite to shoot. The Submoa seemed to like them the best out of the 3. The JTS's were shot at 965-970 fps with a S.D of 2.5. Pellets were taken straight from the tin. The percission of the groups are much tighter, but still lack achieving submoa or moa
IMG_0505.jpeg
ctc of target 1=1.46 ctc of target 2= 1.81

CONCLUSION

50 yards and under, this is a "good" barrel. Not that special in comparrison to the other barrels i have owned like the RTI LR barrel and far below the standard of the Lothar Walther bull barrel.
I find the tooling marks to be very disturbing in a very expensive barrel .."V" and "X" marks on the lands is not what you want to see on an expensive barrel!
Does it shoot well at 100 yards= NO
Would i recommend this barrel to others based on my findings with this barrel=NO
SHould Skout find another vendor=YES
Most important...Was this barrel fun to shoot=NO
I am not an expert, but i would think that all these problems would lessen if there was ANY attention to finishing, which this barrel severely lacks. And not just this barrel! I have reached out to others who own these barrels including a prominent Smith who shared their results with me. It seems to be a common problem. Why would you pay a premium price for a barrel only to have to spend hours lapping the crap out of it to get (maybe) good(better) results?
Is this barrel worth it...in my opinion, you would be better off getting the Lothar Walther bullbarrel than the Submoa
Hope this helps someone make their decission on what after market barrel to purchase
Mike

I went and done it again! oh but what a deal!

Around Thanksgiving I bought a Benjamin Akela in .177 ;I wanted a .22,but they were out. Then around Christmas I got a Benjamin Kratos in .22. Now I just ordered a Benjamin Marauder in.22 with the LW barrel.I almost ordered another Akela in.22 as they have them now, fact is I had it in my "cart" then realized I have enough for now. My Akela shots 1/2in.groups at 30yards with a good trigger....
All these rifles are refurbished by Airgun Revisions and sell at a deep discount..actually I think the best deal in air gunning.
You that have wanted a beginning PCP without spending a a lot of$$$$$ I suggest you look into these great deals.Airgun Revisions.
That's it folks :D

Daisy  Daisy 499b

I had to get one of these. Laitly I have been getting interested in Daisy BB guns. And I also have a fifteen foot indoor pistol range I just started using. This is the wolds most accurate BB gun and it is made for five meter shooting.
Discount codes and all it was 160 bucks.
As soon as I cocked it I could feel the quality. I have a lot of air guns. And this gun is smooth. The trigger is smooth the firing cycle is not bad . I only shot a few BBs . But after sighting in I just started firing and watched the spot open up.
The Diopter peep sight is so cool. I really like it.

Benjamin  Benjamin 392PA @ 50 yards

Did some shooting with the Steroid 392 at 50 yards today. This group was 5 shots and measured a bit over an inch using Norma Heavies and five pumps. I’m sure it could shoot under an inch if I tried a variety of pellets but I only had the scope on it to get a better idea of what it was capable of. I’ve switched back to the Williams peep sight now and in that configuration the gun can shoot better than I can.

FX  Top 5 Reasons to Upgrade Your FX Impact M4 with an Advanced Rail System

Just posted this video on my channel and thought I would share here in the AGN community. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on FX Impact rails and their experiences. I see a lot of people saying that in order to get an FX Impact to shoot with precision that you HAVE to add a rail or some kind of mod. I have found that not to be true, but rather I upgrade my FX Impacts with rails to match how I am going to use it. I have found that when it comes to precision shooting with the FX Impact M4, every detail matters. A key upgrade that can significantly boost performance is the installation of an advanced rail system, such as a high-quality top or bottom rail. In this video, I gave my top 5 reasons why these upgrades are essential for enhancing your shooting experience. Whether it’s increased rigidity, better balance, or improved accessory mounting, these rail systems are designed to maximize your rifle’s potential. What are your thoughts?

Anybody swaging a .25 cal 60 grain Altaros Queen slug?

I'm considering swaging my own slugs and will consider all type of swag presses.

But first I want to test slugs made from different equipment.

Name your price for at least 100 pieces of a slug exactly or similar to the

GX compressor newbie with questions/problems

I need help.... I received my GX CS4 compressor the other day and finally had a chance to set it up and try it out. I first attempted to top off my 9L tank from 2200 to 4500. The tank and set up are from Joe Broncato with a slow flow valve. I let it run for a few minutes but it didn't seem to want to fill(no guage movement that I could see on the pump or the tank) I did smell a faint burning smell but I figured it was because the pump was new. I let it go another minute or two then shut it down with no success. I'm wondering if there is a one way valve in Joe's gauge set up or the slow flow valve is an issue. I can call him during the week but I figured I'd ask here since I'm posting. Retrieved some guns to top off and see what happens. Filled 2 with no problem. The third one I had to stop manually because I noticed a problem with the gauge. Somehow one of the needle arms bent and the pump won't shut off on its own. Don't know if I somehow caused this or some other random issue.
Has anyone taken apart the compressure to get inside the gause so I can straighten out the pin arms? Any insights in my short lived compressor life? Feeling disappointed...

FX  I think I found a magic build amp / huma reg

So I took a huma-air reg and used an amp piston and a slightly altered huma spring stack and it has been the most consistent fastest responding setup I have ever used and I’m using it on a 300bar fill single reg setup and it’s flawless has anyone ever tried this before? What combos do most people run

  • Question
N/A  Mordax vs Huben GK1

Is the Mordax worth the extra investment?
I’m considering purchasing one of these, and both seem to perform well, each with its own advantages and drawbacks.

What stands out to me about the Mordax is the full-auto capability and the removable magazine, which are pretty appealing features. On the other hand, the Huben’s more affordable price tag is definitely a factor to consider.

From what I’ve gathered, both can handle slugs (correct me if I am wrong), so performance in that regard seems comparable. However, I’ve heard that not just any air compressor can handle the pressure needed to fully charge the Huben’s cylinder, which could be a downside if you don't already have a high-pressure compressor.

Also, I would like to know:
1-if optics needed if you are just going for 30 yard.
2- what could be the reason of the unremovable magazine for GK1?
3- If they both take slugs is it more beneficial to get the .22 instead of .25?

What I’m uncertain about is the long-term durability of either brand. If you have any experience or insights on this, I’d love to hear why you might prefer one over the other.

Purpose: Pest control
Caliber: .22 or .25

Umarex  First Air rifle - Notos with some upgrades

This is my first air rifle I just put together. Shoots pretty flat out to 60 yards, at 100 yards have to hold 2 moa. The Notos is a great bang for buck. I did the buck rail lower, skeleton folding stock, plenum kit, silent thunder ordnance falx suppressor, and a cheap fixed 3x discovery scope.

Classified Ads You Waited and LOST On

Curious as to what some of your missed opportunities have been here. I check the classifieds daily unless I'm on a trip and have had a few items that have slipped through my fingers due to me waiting, procrastinating or just not being fast enough.

Three that come to mind.
1. An early BSA Lightning. I'm not sure why, but I've always loved the look of them. Saw one and pondered... and it was gone.
2. AirMax Katran in .177. I looked and looked at it. Just didnt have a need for it and still dont, but dang it was purdy.
3. A Texan 308 in white cam that I missed. I'll blame it on Helene as during the blackout, I decided if it was still available when I got internet back, I'd get it...but it wasnt. Another 'dont need it', but wanted it.

There is another gun right now that I've eyeballed in the classifieds that I typed up a msg to the seller twice now and didnt hit send. I just dont need it and cant justify it.

What are some that yall have missed out on that are memorable?

Other  Choosing an M4 question

Would I be doing myself a disservice by getting a .177 in 600m? I'm learning a small bit more towards that because of shot count, quietness, as well as I have 100 yard (91.44 m) private range and indoor 100 near me. If I do any hunting with will be small game only up to a rabbit. The other option is 22 in 700 mm. Obviously, which whichever I choose ill be getting a barrel of the other caliber.

Edit: I have no power restrictions, I am in Florida.

Brocock/BRK  Torn on what to get.

Looking for a good mid range first PCP. I like Daystate or Brocock. Don't really want to start out with top of the line but have a friend who just ordered an Impact M4 and don't want him to out shoot me. :) I have read reviews on lots of guns but maybe I have read to many. Mostly would do target shooting up to 100 yards and some bird hunting. Thanks for the input.
