RMAC practice.

Practice at 101 yards. .22 Daystate RW HP (Bleu) RD Monsters at 970 FPS. Wind about 7 mph swirling. Two shots not counted were from sighters on card above this one. Plugged to 0.30”. 229-2x. Others targets shot were between 225 and 227. Shot one target each 5 targets on card then repeat 4 more times (competition style). Didn’t shoot five 5-shot groups, which is easier (group style)…

Only pellets at RMAC 100Y BR. I didn’t use flags. They don’t work where I shoot since I’m shooting through a grove of orange, tangerine and lemon trees. I’ll use them at RMAC or anywhere that is a fairly open range. I typically wait for a left to right shift since the trajectory seems more predictable when the wind is in that direction. Most of the wind is from 10 to 11 o’clock direction.

Disclaimer: This is NOT for RMAC practice, as I am just a casual 100 yard BR shooter who enjoys the "virtual" EBR and N50 matches from time to time. Good thing too, and you will see why if you read on.....

Hey Mike,

I did get out this morning at my local outdoor range to shoot some 100 yard EBR cards. I probably should not post these here since I am not attending RMAC, but I wasn't sure whether I should just start a new thread or post here. You have more followers, so I will ride on your coat tails. LOL.

Anyway, I did have two flags out and I lazer'd 98 yards because the BERM is a mess for the 100 yard benches. I shot a total of four cards, shooting one bull at a time, then repeat 4 more times. Boy, is that harder than just shooting 5 shots at just one bull!

I was using the Red Wolf Safari HP .22 shooting MRDs at 970 FPS on Medium Power. Barrel was cleaned before I started. Weather channel had the wind at 5-10 MPH, but it was less than 5 mph at times too. I had a bunch of tail wind conditions that I just could not figure out. Typically, the pellet pushes upward, but my shots were going left of my hold. Much of my holds were at the 3:00 pm outer 8 or 7 ring and I played around with my elevation holds. Sometimes I would nail a 10, but other times not. It's tricky watching both flags, and deciding what to do. If I had a left to right 10am wind condition that I could get fairly often, I think I may have done better. Shot a 213, 214, 214 and a 220

In any case, I had fun and all I can say is that shooting a 225, 227 and a 229 in that 7 mph wind is hard. Takes a lot of practice and experience, I realize. This whole flag thing at 100 yards in no walk in the park!

p.s. A guy next to me was going Elk hunting in New Mexico and shot 3 shots with his powder burner and was gone. He was doing a final sight in for his trip and after he shot 1/2" sub MOA at 100 yards and he was good to go. He kids me about using the air rifle at 100 yards, but in a good joking kind of way.

Hi Tommy, good shooting... Any one of those cards would be competitive at RMAC or EBR. I do see though that you have the same issue as I do with the occasional "low" shot with the RD Monsters. Looking at your 220 card there are three shots that are significantly lower than the other 22 shots (targets 1, 4, 5). I've started to compensate for that since three 7's is a killer on an otherwise good card. What I have started doing is holding at the top of the ten ring. I seem to get just about as many 9s and 10's, and those 2 or 3 low shots turn into 8's vice 7's (although yours would plug to an 8 anyway). Your vertical spread is more than I would expect, but it could be the winds, especially a tail wind. Keep it up, you're improving!

Good tip Mike. And, yes the low shots were unexpected, especially with a tail wind.

Thanks, Tom

Anytime... I think your strategy to get the best score at 100Y is different than 50Y and especially at 25M. You have to accept that you're not going to shoot a perfect card, just not going to happen. So eliminating the shots outside the "paint" (outside the 8 ring) is your main goal. The winning score at RMAC and EBR has never been greater than 225. Thats 25 nine's. So shooting a bit "defensively" and aiming for the top of the ten ring might not get you quite as many tens, but (with the Red Wolf with RDMs at least), you can eliminate the 7's or even the 6's and keep it 8 or better. Every shot at RMAC or EBR 8 or better will certainly get you in the money, and just might get you a win. I'll be very surprised if anyone shoots over 230 at either of those competitions... I'd take that 229 card in the OP and be counting my money in advance if I could. ;)

Yes, Totally different shooting N50 and 100 yard EBR, for the reasons you mentioned. I have spent several months shooting N50 cards and forgot my 100 yard BR strategy. I like the idea of focusing on eliminating 7’s and misses vs, trying to post a score. If I am being honest, I can almost recall after shooting 100’s of EBR cards, and almost always having ONE ( or two) miss, and a few 7’s. I want to try and eliminate those low fliers at least some of the time.

Q. Re, Shooting “defensively” — Is there a particular wind condition that you try and identify when you are aiming at the top of the 10 ring? I know you mentioned you liked to shoot when you have the left to right 10 o’clock condition. I don’t think you are suggesting this POA (top of 10 ring) for all shots, but I was a little fuzzy as to ‘when’ you choose to use the top of the 10 ring for your purposes.

Thanks

I was shooting with Mike that day and learned a lot....I learned I suck ; ) Nowhere near either of you guys, but it was fun and I can't wait to do it again. Shooting 1 pellet on target and moving to the next is much harder than shooting 5 on each at a time. I even bought a new scope so I can go over 24X next time. Hope to hunker down and start practicing in the next few months.

Tony

I had a good laugh as I just read this. “ I learned a lot. I learned I suck.” I was belly laughing because I can easily relate to your journey, as I feel the same way some days. And, it is soooooooo much harder shooting one pellet on a single target and then moving to the next. It closely simulates the real EBR competitions, only we are using 8 X 11” targets vs. using the much larger official EBR targets. So, when you finally do post a score that’s good for you, you know you have shot the card the right way.

Good luck!

P.s. I should have included this in my post, when I showed the four cards. I did use a .035” scoring plug as my .030” was left home. That did help my scoring on a couple of close calls. I am used to using the.035” scoring plug for N50.

Tried my luck again today.

Weather, hot and humid. Got to range at 9:25 and finished at 11:30am. Wind was light and variable at 3-6 mph, and surprisingly I had mostly a 11-12 o:clock tail wind most of my shooting time. I shot the Red Wolf Safari .22 HP again today and I shot a total of four cards. Shot two cards with Slugs ( JSB 25g KO's) and two cards with JSB 25g RDs. I moved my target over to the left today at the 100 yard BERM, and because of damage to the BERM, I ranged it with my range finder at 97.5 yards.

Finally the air Gods were with me today for my very first target. Shot a legitimate 239-7X. I have to say, I started strong and my hold was right over the 10 ring for just about all 25 shots. I know I was using slugs, but who cares! Not sure I will ever do this again at 100 yards.

The other 3 cards were 218, 218, and 216 with the MRDs. I am having a bit of a time trying to figure out the MRDs. The only thing I can think of that did me in with all the 7's and two misses is; I was probably still trying to use my same hold as when I was using the KO's. Literally, it was directly over the 10 ring for most of the time. In retrospect, I should have held higher and I think I may have avoided some 7's and maybe the two misses also.

Here are the cards: ( All cards scored with .035" scoring plug )

One 6 and one 7 on this card

Bottom right target. Not a miss, it was a sighter that blew left a lot more than I thought it would. Only one 7 and one 6 on this card.

Four 7's on this card - ouch.

Today I was working on getting a 25 Taipan long sighted in and took it to 102 yards where Mike shoots….Mike was driving to Utah so I sat at the bench he shoots from. I felt his knowledge coming up from the seat and into my body…maybe it was the pork cops and peppers I ate for breakfast, but I think it was knowledge. Once dialed in I shot these 2 targets in the wind that mike talks about….not great, but I am learning….today I learned too much cheek pressure on this rifle and it acts up. Still had a fun day.

Tried today some 100 yds BR. Unfortunately not able to attend RMAC due to work.

Best card was 219. I do not have the plug yet, it's on its way so some shots were pretty close calls.

Wind was from 8 o clock at around 5 to 8 mph.

This was shot with a Thomas HPX shooting MRD at around 965fps. I am still new with this gun so I need more bench time to get used to it and improve step by step.
