new crown 25 info

Received my new crown 25 in walnut today. Had a couple of hours to mess with it and thought I'd share what I've found. I'll leave the reviews up to Tom. He does a complete job. This gun arrived in good shape. No dings on the shipping box. Standard FX box. No hard case. Mag and fill. Great looking wood. Adjustments set at 3 and Max. Reg shows 130. Spent some time pulling patches to clean barrel. It cleaned up in half the time as my other FX guns. Set up the crony 18 inches in front of the muzzle. Mounted a Hawke 8x32x56 with FX mounts. After sighting in at 50 yards I started with JSB 33.95 standard pellets. 5 shots averaged 772 fps and groups were not what I was used to. Changed over to the 75 yard target and my groups were about 2 inches. Changed to JSB Mark II and my fps went up to 780 fps on a 5 shot group. Groups tightened up to about 1 1/2 inch. Then tried the JSB 25.39 grain. 5 shots averaged 908 fps and were grouping well within an inch. Turned the adjustment back to the A setting and this gave me average of 862 fps, and get this. 5 shot groups were just one ragged hole. Amazing. Refilled the gun and tried a couple of other targets at 75 yards and same thing. By then I had run well over 100 rounds through the gun, so thought I would revisit the 33.95 Mark II's again. With setting back to Max it was now shooting them an average of 800 fps and groups had tightened up to a solid 1 inch. I believe they will tighten up to the one ragged hole if I can get them up around 860 fps. By then it was to hot to continue, so I'll take this up tomorrow. Remember this is a brand new gun and the first 100 plus rounds. It seems to still be settling in as fps is climbing. BUT, the 25 grain making one gagged hole! I've never done that at 75 yards. This is looking to be really outstanding. Also, I have no idea what the twist rate on this one is. Can't find it listed anywhere. And with the shroud out it is quiet. Sylvan

Sylvan,
Nice writeup! Thanks for sharing your info and thanks for the plug! lol :) That's what I love about this forum, everyone starts their new rifle in a different way and shares what they find for all to see. I'll be comparing my chrony numbers to your's tomorrow. Post a pic!
I'm really happy with my Crown so far! I've only spent a short time with it but, it has been impressive. Mine seems to like the .25's as well (x5 ~3/8"@100y, what?!?!), although I haven't tried the heavies yet.
If you haven't put a wrench on yours yet, check out the pics in my post. It might shed some light on some other areas of your rifle that you haven't seen yet. :)

Twist rate - I think the twist rate is stamped/printed on the sleeve itself. But, I haven't pulled (and don't plan to pull) my sleeve out to check. But, it makes sense that it would be there. I haven't noticed this info anywhere else on the rifle.

Day 2. Went out this morning and decided to just run a couple hundred rounds through the gun because fps was rising and groups were getting tighter. Same tight groups as yesterday for first 100 rounds or so, and then. Things started to go south. Group spread way out. the one ragged hole at 75 yards turned into 2 inch with wild flyers. Pulled some patches through the barrel, checked the breach seal, tired different settings. Thought it's got to be the scope. Changed it out. Put the crony on it and fps looked good across the board. Seemed to have leveled off and spread was tightening up. Still poor groups. Decided to just step away for a while and cool off. Came back this evening and decided to give it another go. Took the gun over to air it up and when I stood it on the butt pad something went clunk. What the hell was that? After tipping it back and forth discovered both stock screws had backed out about one turn. That'll do it. Don't know why I didn't check the basics first and save myself the grief. Changed the scope back, tightened the stock screws and it's a one hole gun again. Spent the whole day chasing my tail. Set out to shoot 3/8 inch at 100 yards, If Tom can do it by hell so can I!. Maybe another day. Sylvan

Keep shooting that gun, I'm reading all crown info I can find. Two Crowns arrive at my house tomorrow for myself and puertorico. I hope the gun will perform with the MKII's. We have been breaking in his new Wildcat with a 8 day gunning vacation here on my permissions. Any numbers you give out can get us on top of the guns so much quicker. Keep up that good information and thanks for the post.

OIbviously you have already diagnosed the issue (stock screws), but just to share the issues I had with a new .25 Bobcat. (NOT in any way wanting to take away or hijack this thread), but I bought FX No Limits Scope Rings and they were appalling as they indicated that the barrel drooped and went off to the left. No amount of shimming or ring alteration helped. I spent days changing various small scope ring & scope settings and cleaning the barrel. In the end I stuck on some SportsMatch ATP66 rings (fully adjustable for elevation & windage), which immediately confirmed that the barrel was near straight. So my message to you is not to doubt your rifle's accuracy as it would have been thoroughly Quality Checked @ FX. Check your peripheral equipment, because just because it says FX on the Scope & Rings, doesn't necessarily mean that it has been manufactured to the same exacting tolerances as your rifle. More photos please, am really looking forward to reading more FX Crown reviews.
