Any RWS 34 .177 shooters here?

I've been looking for a while for something to shoot that's lighter than my Diana 48. I've looked at HW 95's, R9's and RWS 34's in .22. I had made my mind up on R9 in .22 until this AM, then I decided it would be fun to try it in a .177. The only problem is that I couldn't find one without sights and if I were going to spend $400 I was going to get what I wanted.

While cruising around the web the RWS 34 crept into my little mind again so I started looking at them again. I found that Midway USA has them on sale for $256.49 and they also had one "blem" for $219. I couldn't help myself, had to make the call and get some more info. The lady I spoke with assured me that the gun would function as it should and that if I wasn't satisfied it could be returned within 90 days. I figured for $232 shipped it was worth a chance,so it's on order.

I'll need pellets so if you shoot one in .177 could you tell me what your rifle likes best?

I have had a .177 34 since about 2012 or so. I absolutely love it. It was my 1st "real" air rifle and it's one that I will never sell. I should say that about 1500 or 2000 pellets into owning it the spring broke. I put a vortek PG2 kit into and it's been fine since. I didn't have a chrony then, but I have one now and it's about a 12 fpe gun. Yes, lower than what it could/should be, but I wouldn't change a thing on it. I also have a .22 48 and love them both. They complement each other well.

I'd start with a variety of Air Arms and JSB pellets. Try both 8.4 and 10.3 versions. I've had great results from both. However, in my latest batches, the AA 8.4s performed (retained velocity) much better than the JSBs. I posted about it here > http://www.airgunnation.com/topic/177-bc-testing-aa-vs-jsb/

Justin my RWS 34 was purchased in the 90s and is still going strong. It was my first high quality airgun and is deadly on squirrels to this day. It’s pellet of choice has always been a RWS Supermag 9.3g wadcutter and i’ve tried them all, but every airgun is different. It produces about 15 fpe.

Over the years I have gone from open sights to scopes using a UTG scope mount base with Weaver rings. I have also added a shotgun style slip on recoil pad for a 34 does recoil. It will be lighter than your 48 and easier to carry. Good luck with your purchase, and I hope to shoot mine 20 more years.

I think you'll enjoy you RWS 34.

Here's my 34 oldie. I did some "basketweave" on it just to dress it up. Never did shoot it a lot because I was working but still had it sent to John in PA for a tune about a year ago.

Now that I have an FWB 300 collection it just sits in the rack .
