Airgun Technologies New gun - .22 Vulcan 3 700mm / Synthetic Stock - Slugs - what are you guys running?

Per the title of this thread - I just got my new gun yesterday (Friday 05 April) and did some very early testing with it today with the little bit of ammo I happen to have available.

I bought it from Talon Tunes and asked Tony to tune it so that I could get 32 - 34 grain slugs flying out of it 970-990'ish fps. They (apparently) tuned it using some altaros slugs in that weight range and had to dial the reg up to around 155 bar to achieve that velocity. Great. Gun arrives - I start looking through what I have available here in the house - a tin of .217 H&N's @30g. I get a scope on it and get a rough zero and then start sending some of these H&N's - I didn't run it over a chrony so I honestly have no idea how fast they're going. It was stupid windy out today too so definitely not a day for doing any kind of real true accuracy / testing. These H&N's shot pretty good at 30 and 50 yards given the wicked l-r cross wind I was dealing with. I don't plan on buying the altaros slugs - I looked and they seem kinda pricey . . . NSA's are probably the best bang for the buck ( thank you Nick & Family ) but I'm game for ZAN's, Patriots, etc . . . . I had heard / read that Zan has sample packs now - I googled and sure enough they do. I might look into some of those (a .217 and .218 pack).

So . . . for you guys who have this gun and are shooting slugs with it - I'm just curious to hear what is working for you and at what speed. If / when we ever get nice weather again ( seriously starting to wonder about that . . . {sigh} - Upstate N.Y. ) I'll obviously run it over a chrony and do some 'proper' testing / tuning - but hoping to maybe get some ball park data from you guys in advance.

My buddy @steve123 , has a V3 in .25, shooting the Altaros slugs, and he's pretty much a shoo-in of slug class when he comes to these high power/long range field target matches. As an example, you might even find one of the Altaros options performs well from your .22 V3 barrel, like they do Steve's .25 V3. You'd get a bit better BC from the Altaros than from the VM, trade-off being higher cost.

@zx10wall, how do the .22 V3 barrels perform with Altaros slugs?

Thought FOR SURE you'd post pictures, you know, new gun pic. Was hoping to get a look.
EDIT: I originally typed "you know, new gun p**n" (rhymes with corn) but I guess it was censored! WTF?
** If ** that bright thing in the sky should actually appear sometime tomorrow maybe I'll grab a photo of it along with an old pl**boy magazine just to doll it up that little bit extra. <grin>

I can just see that now - my wife will see me out in the back yard with the magazine, the gun and a camera and she'll be like "... wtf?!" :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

JD,
Congrats on the new gun. Wildman (British) slugs, available from Pyramyd Air, are worth trying. My V3 .30 loves the 60 grain, best by far in my search. WM
Have you tried AVS slugs in .3063 diameter? To my knowledge he's the only source for slugs that fit these oversize barrels. https://avsslugs.com/product-category/306/
I don't know if the V3 comes with a depinger now but I 3d printed one for mine.

Mine is now three weeks old and about 1300 shots through it and has broke in with a ver consistent 935fps with 25gr KO’s 218. And of course the jsb 25 pellets as well with the same poi as the slugs out to 125yrds . It’s getting outstanding accuracy and a great shot count. But it did need to be cleaned about every 100 shots at first but now about 200 shots or when I loose the accuracy. And for now I don’t feel the need to shoot heavier or faster ammo.

AVS .3063 shot accurately but $28/100 to-my-door pricing and a foot on the sidelever to load, were dealbreakers. U2 .30 (700mm), with balanced valve, is far less ammo fussy, found several slugs to shoot well, V3, not so much. Out of AVS, NSA, Javelin, Wildman and ZANS, all around 60 grains, .300 or .301, Wildman's (Dish, Flat base) were hole-in-hole with both @ 50 yds. Wildman's $23/100 to-my-door, from Pyramyd Air, can be improved with PA's ammo deals and discounts. Picture of factory installed V3 depinger shows damage, replacement from Talon Tunes made no difference. Considering member suggestions to switch V3 to low power configuration, loud "clang" in ear just isn't cutting it, especially since U2 doesn't do it. WM

OK guys - new post ( sorry - no playboy mags for accompanying pics . . . lol ).

So . . . I did a little further rifling around in my 'box 'o various ammo's' to see if I had any other slugs I could try. I wanted to see if I had a .217 / .218 combo so I could get a feel for what the barrel prefers. ( I'm thinking it prefers .217's ) I found said combo with a couple of tins of H&N 27g slugs - one tin of .217's and one of .218's. This thing (the V3) EASILY dialed up to over 1000 fps with these and long story short - the .217's at 1015 average over a full 12 shot mag held a little less than an inch at 47yds in my back yard. ( a dead tree / tree stump out there ) 12-15mph wind coming from behind me at about 6:30-7:00. That was mid-afternoon'ish. I went inside, got something to eat, watched the boob tube and after a while got bored with that and noticed that the neighbors flag across the road didn't appear to be getting blown around quite a hard as it had been earlier in the day. check the weather on my phone - yeah - wind has eased up a ~little~ - but still going pretty good. Whatever - I'm going to try out those 30g slugs again. I make no changes to the gun - leaving it / the reg / hammer spring tension as it was from earlier in the day slinging those 27's at 1010-1020. I put up another target out on the tree stump and dial up 5 clicks figuring that for sure these, being a little heavier and likely going slower are going to drop some. Pew! "Whoa . . . . " It's good l-r but about a mil HIGH. 'High?" OK - whatever - I dial it down 10 and "blammo!". NICE . . . I unload that mag and real happy with the results -- I gotta go get my chrono and find out how fast these are going. Yeah - as expected a little slower - 972'ish avg as it turns out over the next 12 shots. But "oh my" - pretty nice for the very basic "tuning" I've done to this point and not in ideal conditions. (Windy - not doing this on a dead calm day)

Again - I'm pretty stoked about that 47yd'er . . . I look at Molly the dog and ask her if she wants to "go for a ride"? She knows what that means and was all excited and rearing to go! I grab a target from my garage, we jump in the car and off we go to the local range where I can take it out to 100. I quick "build" this gun in strelok guessing at some values, namely the scope height, and then key in the 100 yard distance, taking into account the still present wind - but now it's a l-r cross wind coming from 9:30-10:00'ish o'clock. It's getting later in the afternoon and it is letting up some but still 10'ish mph and now "switchy" - ie: on/off - sometimes 10, sometimes 15'ish, sometimes 3 or none (off). You can see in the attached pic - the vertical that strelok told me to dial up was damned near spot on, and you can also clearly see the horizontal where the wind was driving me batty.

I'm (basically) a happy camper with this thing so far - I don't really have a lot of rounds through it just yet - maybe a couple hundred - but - yeah. I'm almost inclined to just grab some more of these 30g H&N's but - more than one of you have recommended the ZAN's (30.5's) and the VK's are also reported to be very good as well. I may in fact pick up some of both and give them a test to see what's what before I decide to start marking up the turret tape.

Not glad you're experience this, but I'm glad I am not the only one to feel this way about the gun. I had one in .25 long barrel, traded it with my partner cause of the ping. It shoots great, but that incessant ping was too much, he doesn't mind it. So I traded his SB dreamline 30 for a katran .22 bl and am keeping it. You may fare better by making your own 31mmOD depinger and sliding it inside the tube. It should work relatively, read that it worked for someone in one of the posts, I think it titles "ping be gone"

That's a beautiful shot string, and great shooting for the conditions. You will LOVE the VK, they offer outstanding expansion, better than any other slug out there.

Yes, know that depinger thread well. Bought Synthetic V3 and U2 (700mm) .30 around holidays in 2022. U2 went back for warranty replacement of balanced valve after 2 months, has been clearly superior since. Smoother, quieter, less ammo fussy with same power as V3, what motivation is there to shoot the V3? Lower power configuration of V3 might help it find a niche, or at least be more pleasant to shoot. Yeah, I considered tuning it down, but I don't like long heavy rifles to begin with, and mine was paired with a arken sh4 and an atlas v8 bipod. So not the best for me, a bit long, too loud, and heavy. An amazing rifle over all, just not what I expected, and I would hate to bring down the power level to what other guns can manage with a lot less length so it got rehomed, and if I ever feel like using it, all I gotta do is drive 12mins down the road to my buddys house.

He has a U1 .30 that practically sounds broken in comparison and is super smooth on the cocking lever.

I've shared my experience with others considering U2 or V3, so silver lining there. They sit side by side on the gun rack, deciding which to shoot, let's see, one smooth and quiet, other, sounds like slamming lid on cooking pot, guess which gets the nod. WM

Yup, very understandable. For me, I couldn't let such an expensive rifle just sit in idle.
