BSA BSA Meteor Super Re-Crown

I've struggled to get decent groups with this gun from the getgo and after talking to @Keene a bit about his I decided redo the crown. I had noticed since day one that the crown was crooked and only half the muzzle had a slight crown to begin with. I kept putting off re-crowning the gun because I had never tried before.l and some days it would seem to group well and other days it wouldn't. I thought I was the problem.

After it finally dawned on me that I probably wouldn't make anything worse, I went for it. Just a heads up so ya'll don't fight the gun like I had to. The pivot bolt is reverse threaded. Why? No friggin idea but it is.

Basically all I did was turn the muzzle end in my lathe a bit past the factory "crown" and then added a slight taper. It was actually pretty easy to do. I know the finish isn't great but I'll be touching it up later. I just wanted to get something done quickly to see what sort of difference it made.

It made a big difference and the gun can actually group somewhat respectfully now.

I've really got to get some more trigger time on mine, kinda afraid to shoot it though, as the 10 or 15 shots I have taken from it all dieseled really bad...afraid I'm going to ruin the seal if I don't preemptively take the gun apart and clean it up inside.
Install a Vortek TX200 piston seal while you're in there. Mine was actually torn when I tore mine down for the dieseling issue and I had to replace it. The TX seal is a perfect fit.

Thanks for sharing. Mine hardly shoots as good as yours before you did your crown work. It's very hold sensitive even to get a fair shoot pattern. Out of all of my many air rifle it is the sorriest accuracy shoot I have or ever shot.

also mine is the most hold sensitive rifle that I have out of many many air rifles. I sure did my back out and check the crown. Charles

If you want me to take a peak at it just let me know. I think you have my phone number. If not just shoot me a message. They are pretty nice guns when shooting properly

Just just yesterday I picked up a BSA Super Sport Magnum .22. Sights were lost some where along the line, and BKL double strap mnt's provided. Don't know much about this rifle other than it's really nice build quality. I would say an honest 95 % . The shot cycle typical BSA harseness. Is this a spring gun? I've tried researching and haven't come up with much. Any input would be much appreciated. TIA

My Meteor shot like a dog out of the box and dieseld like a dieseling thing.

The barrel was cleaned and then subsequently given the bore paste treatment. The cut piston seal replaced with a Brit Seal TX seal. The crown addressed with the brass screw and bore paste method.......All to minimal avail.

After seeing a post on another thread, and PMing Sqwirl57 about concerns I had that the crown of my gun was faulty he confirmed the same problem with his Meteor. The results of his ministrations pictured above were pretty damned good!

Not having access to a lathe, and never having cut a barrel before, it took me a few days to summon enough courage to start working on what was essentially a wall ornament, but also an unmolested rifle. My initial approach was to remove a couple of threads of the threaded end of the muzzle using a file, and then sanding down with 400, 600 and 2000 grit paper. It wasn't until after I'd re-shot the gun, and appreciated no improvement in accuracy, that I re-inspected the muzzle. With bare metal exposed against the bore it was now obvious that the bore was not concentric with the barrel.

Mmmmmm!

With nothing to lose I attacked the muzzle again, this time cutting off the entire threaded section with a hacksaw(I have no need for a suppressor), re-filing and sanding the muzzle end to a mirror finish. The brass screw crowning method was again employed but I'm not convinced it made much difference to the crown, not that I could see anyway. If this approach had not worked I was prepared to keep cutting, a half inch at a time, until success, or owning a handgun in a rifle stock:ROFLMAO:. But fate intervened, apparently lending me a reprieve, because Lo and Behold, the bore now appeared to be in the dead center of the barrel. The muzzle and end of the bore was brass brushed to remove any thin burrs. Barrel recleaned, bore pasted and recleaned again. 50 or so cheap pellets down the barrel shot at an old text book.

Interesting note: initial dieseling stopped within the first ten pellets.

Back to the back yard!

Those 2 and 3 inch scattergun patterns are now reduced to about a half inch at 18 yds with fliers here and there. A tremendous improvement! I'm not sure if I need to revisit my muzzle finishing to determine if I left any burrs behind, or whether to leave well enough alone until another tin or two of pellets have been dispensed with.

Any advice at this point would be very well received.

What pellets are you using? Mine seems to prefer FTTs

Also, mine is not concentric either. Its close but definitely not right.
