What BigHun said + plenum is the supply air for firing cycle. Big plenum makes sure there is less pressure drop during firing cycle...

9mm is a special setup and your best bet is to buy the 9mm. Downgrading 9mm works. Upgrading to 9mm will be a challenge.

Sounds like dirty check valve. Inspect and clean check valve under burst disk on top of compressor.
