I have an airgun field target and bench rest range set up at the local rifle club. And I am always trying to “advertise” and recruit new people into the airgun community. Seems the guys in the club know about it but haven’t come out. So I decided to join them and show how an airgun does.

The big 100 yard rifle range has a separate 22lr section.
They have a bunch of big metal reactive targets set out to 100 yards. Using my HFT-500 at 16 ft lb I can hit them. But knocking them down is another thing. And I can’t reset them. And when the wind starts. I can’t see what I’m hitting out at 100 yards so I can’t adjust. So I need something bigger.

I found a used FX Crown with a wood stock. I really don’t want synthetic. Just me but I like wood and the adjustable cheek piece.
It’s chambered in .30 cal. shooting 44.5 gr at 900 fps. That is comparable to a 22lr for target work I and I should be able to see it hit.

It has a small leak and I want to rebuild it all eventually anyway so I am waiting for some seals to arrive . I excited this should be a fun winter project.

The idea is to show the gun club guys that it is not a Red Ryder that we are shooting down there.

Two things:

1) Trying to use the Crown for that purpose will only lead to disappointment. I recommend giving up and sending it to me.

2) We shoot pellets on metallic silhouettes, including .22 RF silhouettes (40, 60, 77, & 100 meters) which certainly changes the airgun impression of powder burner shooters. They quickly shift from "Ha, ha, pellet guns!", to not wanting to shoot on targets of our size.

Ours is a small club but we have managed to convert one .22 LR shooter to a springer, and one of the most dedicated and influential members is strongly considering acquiring a PCP rifle.

All kidding aside, please keep us in the loop as to what you attempt and how it works out. While I am selfish enough not to want the range crowded, sharing the interest seems like the right thing to do.

The top green disk is 160 m, and the .22 CPHP make a nice "clang" from the Streamlines, DRS, S510, Gauntlet, and even a Diana 48 .177

I got out today for a little while. First time really shooting this gun. It has a lot of power. I managed a good group at 68 yards . First shot was a sight in . Then five shots. This gun need better glass. I’m going to up grade that and retest. Very different than my field target gun. Softer and smoother rather than crisp and sharp is the only way I can describe it.

A caution about upgrading scopes and similar changes that serve also to remove the excuses. ;)
