STO Big Bore moderators

My experience with STO in .22 and .25 is amazing, I know the more flow the better. I’m sure if they made them for big bore, they work! Hopefully someone has tried one, but you might have to let us know!
I sent them a message to see what they would recommend. Ill pick 1 up and compare it to my donnyfl variants.

After reading this post I visited their site and was pleasantly surprised to see some experimental bIg-bore moderators for sale. I’m watching these with interest. I recall that they didn’t use to make moderators beyond .30 caliber.
They recommended the mus2 for my 45 texan. I placed my order this morning. We will see how it does 🤞. Says experimental so hoping if it doesn't do well i can get some more internals as they develop them.

Almost the same size. Ill be testing these head to head in the next few days. Ill report back with what my ears think. Test gun will be 24" barrel 45 texan.
STO Mus 2 VS DONNYFL Ronin

Im as curious as you guys are. The Ronin does a decent job. I use one on my 257 texan and its pretty quiet for 180fpe. The ronin also works well on my 34" barrel texan 45. Ill try them on both texans most likely.

Not sure if barrel length will make a difference if they are roughly the same fpe. My goal isn't absolutely silence, I just dont want to feel the need to wear hearing protection when I shoot. I say this, but I ordered a witt machine muzzle brake for the texan as well. So I will be comparing noise level and accuracy of both moderators and a muzzle brake(still waiting on it to arrive).

I'm glad that STO has started rolling these things out. I had contacted them years ago about doing something for the big bore 357. FYI, the barrel's thread size on the Rattler 357 is M14-1 and thread size on a Challener 457 is M18-1.

I'd considered trying one, but I am turned off by almost anything 3D printed for big bores. I refuse to be the tester of 3D printed inserts for big-bore moderators. Here's where Donny FL hold the advantage in my eyes.
I dont disagree with you. I have it in my hands so ill be the test dummy for now. Hopefully they wouldn't sell a product that wont stand up to moderator big bore power levels. Im only running around 500 fpe so nothing crazy. Ill try to get out today to give it a true test and I will definitely report any good or bad findings. If it doesn't beat the ronin on sound levels, I will just stick with the ronin. The ronin has already proven itself with my 45/257, so there should be no surprises there.

@Nealgl1985 500 FPE is powerful enough to where if that projectile clips the 3D printed insert I’d expect the internals to fail. I will be watching to read your results and conclusions.

I just finished up my test with the moderators. They were almost equal in sound but the ronin had a deeper tone. The STO felt quiet, but had a sharp higher note that pierced my ear more. Not sure if that makes sense. It was almost quieter but louder at the same time. The ronin was almost louder but in the right tone.

I fired around 50 shots in a row with the ronin and then switched to the STO and it was instantly noticeable that my ears felt it more. The first time I took the texan out to shoot it I screwed on a kami for a .72 cal on it and that is what the STO reminded me of. They both had this higher pitch that breaks through to the ear. I will try the muzzle brake when it comes in and if I see a difference in recoil and group size ill probably just run the brake and call it good, if not it will stay with the ronin.

The STO might have had some clipping. The 1st 2 shots were near where the ronin was hitting then the next 2 shots were 12" left of that, but still next to eachother. I swapped back to the ronin and shots were back on target. Accuracy was good with the ronin. The sub moa barrel lives up to the hype if you do your part and can manage the recoil.

I would not recommend the STO over the ronin for 500fpe. If anyone knows of a noticeably quieter option than the ronin please let me know, but I dont think it gets much quieter for the size than the ronin. My ronin has seen 2-300 rounds of 500fpe so far with no issues.
