I know it sounds like a silly question but what could happen if I transport an air tank that is not DOT approved? The tank is brand new and in perfect condition, and it's solid as a rock. Are there getting in trouble with the law implications? Can the tank blow up because of vibrations or whatever during transport? I really have no idea. Thanks for the help!

If "you" personally transport it nothing its all your liability. Chunk it in your car/ pickup and go ..
If you pay a shipper or like luggage on a bus or plane i guess b st disclose it as it is for them to determine there liabilities. Theres alos good un or eu canada certification tanks are good but if a tank from suwor tank factory china ..lol. still even of dot its needs to be in hydro to be called good .. if not then its back to your own risks

Does the tank have any certification or testing done at all? What are the letters and numbers stamped into the tank, if any? Forget transporting it, I'd be concerned with a untested, pressurized tank sitting next to my head, regardless how new or nice looking. Maybe that would be the question.
Otherwise, empty the tank before shipping. Is there no way to fill it at the destination, noting that it isn't DOT approved and probably a commercial shop won't fill it?

Private use only you are good to go. The DOT is a requirment for commerical purposes. This gets argued to infinity and beyond in the scuba world. If it bothers you then do not transport it and do not pull the tags from your mattresses

Nothing is going to blow up. The tank is designed to handle a lot more pressure than 4500psi. It is very safe to transport.

You can get to at least a summary of 10CFR49 is you are concerned. It is LONG because it discusses transportation of all hazardous materials (or at least a lot of them, Nuclear may be in a different regulation). Also transportation by rail, road, or water. I did not read it but looked briefly at an AI generated summary. It mainly concerns commercially transporting hazardous materials including SCBA tanks. So the company that brings you the non-DOT rated tank has more hoops to jump through than you do. Personally I didn't see anything that worried me. Commercially you are pretty much told to transport SCBA tanks vertically in a rack. But that does not apply to individuals. There may be a requirement that you transport it in a safe manner or something vague. I think my tray is safe and I would guess a bag would be safe. It isn't a great idea to throw a full tank in the back of a pickup unsecured and start driving around. The valve could get knocked off and then the bottle becomes a projectile. But I don't know that there are enough regulations applicable to individuals to effectively prevent you from doing something stupid like that.
The bigger impact on us airgunners is the inability for commercial establishments from filling our non DOT rated bottles or expired bottles.

I had this discussion with our shipping vendor. Empty tank it does not matter. Full tank is hazardous material. Just remove the valve and you can ship as it is obviously empty.

I don't mind at all DOT publishing regulations for transportation of SCBA tanks. If you brake the valve off a full one it is dangerous. But I just do not understand why they got into who can fill them and certifying them. Transportation is Civil Engineer stuff. Design and testing of pressure vessels is Mechanical Engineer territory. I think they were acting in areas they didn't understand and we pay the price.
