1st hunt 2025

Squirrel season opened the 15th and I usually go opening morning but when I woke up my knee was killing me and it was kind muggy out so gave me a excuse to wait. Finally went this morning got in woods at 7:20 and walked out at 9:10. Closest shot was about 15 yds from hickory tree and pretty much straight up, farthest was 60 yds 2 mil dot hold over on a fox squirrel sitting out in mown field cutting hickory nut, others were 30-40 yds. Hit her right thru both ears. Gun used was FX Crown MK1 .30 jsb 44.75 gr pellet, 1st time hunting anything with .30 other then 4-5 starlings its a squirrel thumper for sure. All headshots except one that I hit thru throat and came out bback leg.

Nice. We still have 3 weeks before our season starts. I’m excited for it! Hopefully I get to see as many squirrels as you do.
This woods has been loaded with squirrels since I first received permission to hunt it 3 yrs ago,1st time I hunted it I seen at least 40 squirrels in 2 hrs maybe more woods looked like all the nut trees had squirrels in them. Last year I killed 43 squirrels out of it and I didnt hunt it as much as I should of due to my bad knee.
Nobody really squirrel hunts anymore, when I was a kid hunting there were squirrel hunters parked by every woods you drove by at daylight. I havent seen a hunter around here in 10 yrs or longer. Those that do hunt go maybe 1 or 2 times then done.

Sounds like a great time hunting but your time in the woods would be short. Where I’m located, there’s always hunters here on public land And at every parking lot.

Missouri starts up in May but the summer is too dang hot and humid to be out in the woods with mosquitos and ticks. So far, the end of August is shaping up to be a nice transition into fall with decent cooler temps. I am looking forward to it.
I hope this weather last for another month. On a walkabout it's nice to not become a smorgasbord for the blood sucking vermin.

Great hunt. Consider yourself fortunate to be able to hunt small game with a .30 cal. Here in PA our Game Commission has not gotten with the times and limits calibers to .177 or .22 for small game.
Make no sense, are your allowed to use a .22 rimfire if so then you should be allowed to use .30 pellets. While .22 pellet is plenty the .30 sure thumps them.

.177 .20 .22 is perfect for small game at least in KY . My Sheridan in .20 is the best for Squirrel and rabbit . Pellets in a pouch or pocket and the Sheridan an off i go .
