HW/Weihrauch MK1 HW77 Front Sight Assembly Question

Shot my early HW77 the other day. Cocking lever fell out after a shot. Expected to see the detent ball rolling around on the ground. Nope, still staked. Was thinking maybe tired spring until I realized the entire front assembly had moved forward. Slid back into place. Holds for a shot or two then moves again. Looking at schematics for the current version it appears there’s a grub screw that holds the front assembly in place on the barrel. Correct me if I’m wrong. Does anyone know if the first version had a grub screw? There’s something that looks a bit like a grub screw, but if that’s what it is I think I’m going to have to drill out because the head doesn’t look right. Hoping someone knows for sure. If it’s friction fit then only thing I can think of is to tap back in place with a wooden block, maybe heat a little first?

No grub screw or anything that looks like it could be on my Mk1. The sight end might just be press fit on a splined barrel. I've heard of people heating them up and knocking them off. Loctite makes a medium strength green wicking loctite that should hold it if you can knock it back into position. I'd try that before drilling anything on that rifle. I'm almost certain the green wicking loctite will hold it for normal function.
Good luck
Ron

Usually there is a small dovetail that is milled onnthe barrel that the front assembly locks onto. Some also had spline pressed fit with it. They just slide on tightly.
The top block is a cast block and can wear from use or hairline crack or the dovetail can get loose
inspect it closely in the gaps for any cracks.
Tap it off with a block of wood if it’s moving already. More likely it will need to be retainer applied innthe dovetails and front area. Loc Tite. 680 works best.

As for grubb Screws. The top holes are for mounting the sight on top.

I have pics I can get later

Thanks, Ron and A. G. R. Mine looks to have a hole with something in bottom of base, can only see it when you release the lever.Possible someone tried to put a screw in, no idea. I was going to look through a loupe and get closer look at what’s on underside of assembly anyway, so will use it to check for cracks. Sight blade and everything intact on mine, just suddenly decide to start moving.

This place has a few threads on it

Just seems early / mk1 was a pressed on and can come loose over time . I dont know how well that loctite trick would do but maybe put a spot of epoxy glue that has hold power and then tap it back in place .

Probably more just the first ones to pop up

MY HW77 long (newer) has a tiny grub screw on the bottom , most likely a tiny Allen wrench . not near my tools to try it .

Mk2 and up has this. The mk1 was solid cast and pressed on .. ( don't hold me to all that ). Was when you looked up hw77 parts like at chambers thd 2 front sight assembly's were listed / 2 different parts . Also one has the removable blade and the old was one whole piece

My bad 3 different front assembly

I guess find a good spot and drill and tap a set screw in to the mk1 assembly ??? I just don't know a good real fix .

Correct, three frontsight units. The current one by far the best. Hoping to cure without having to pull it off. If I have to remove then I‘ll look at drilling and tapping for set screw like the current version. There’s plenty of room but the metal is soft so I have concerns about it holding up. Advice from Ron and A. G. R. is usually pretty solid.

Well, took one shot to verify how luck I’m not! Looks like I’ll be buying some friction fit Loctite.
Well thats a recommended thing to try ..

Good luck ..

Ask for a free sample 😉

That green stuff i posted earlier will work. There's a higher strength green that we used on train bushings at the LIRR. Its stupid strong but I think it's way overkill. I got my stuff from Amazon.

Good luck to you
Ron

Thanks, Ron. After I cleaned out all the red n tacky it came with this gun settled in nicely just under 12 FPE so unit shouldn’t take a big beating. And I shouldn’t ever need to replace it since you already showed us the part to order if the ball comes unstaked ha ha.
Mine is much nicer to use now with the lighter detent ball. I've been shooting it everyday. Mine makes 13.2-14.5 fpe depending on pellet. The accuracy is improving with shot count. It's stronger than my 26mm 97 yet the 77 has less recoil movement seen in the scope. There's something about the 25mm piston guns.

Good luck with yours.

@Mycapt65 should that Loctite you showed wick in without having to remove front sight? Bluing on this gun is so good. Add to that the soft metal I’d have to bang on and I’m really hoping to avoid removing the sight. Thanks.
Yes. Stand it up and let gravity help. Any excess can be wiped off later with acetone.
