I have a couple of questions on this compressor, as far as coolant what is everyone using ? Antifreeze pure or 50/50 mix, would like to know brand and type. Distilled water and water wetter- mixture of each. I have to admit I haven't paid a lot of attention to the compressor section lately as I have been very busy since the first of the year. I usually go to the dive shop but I've decided it's time to do it myself. I bought a GX-E-5K1 on prime day last week and my wife is wondering when I'm going to start it up LOL. My search didn't reveal too much as far as coolant. Thanks in advance Darell

tommyb, I do remember reading that post back in June but at the time was not even thinking of buying a compressor because I was painting my house. Maybe I should say old age and failing to retain lol. Thanks for the link lots of good info. first thing tomorrow is to see how to disconnect the return line so I can flush the unit. Think I'll go with the 50/50 mix unless I hear of something better tomorrow. Thank you again for posting the link sir !

A good friend on AGN ( EPG) posted a nice set up thread on the GX- E- 5K1 he bought new back in February. He gives a good “open box and detailed set up review“ with fill times and observations. He used a 50-50 mix of Antifreeze and plain water, as he lives in CT. I see you live in WA State, so I’m guessing you might keep in garage so the 50/50 mix seems to be a good fit if you think it may get to 32 degrees or lower during the winter.

Do a search on “GX-E-5k1” and take a look. Also, feel free to PM Ed with questions or set up guidance.

If you NEVER have the opportunity for it to freeze and break things, I wouldn't spend the time on glycol. I'd just use distilled water with some water wetter(Auto parts Store) in it. I figure if it works on over bored high revving motorcycles with limited radiator, it can can work just as well on a compressor.

I found that post yesterday searching on AGN just before posting mine but I will contact him as I have a few more questions. I am also adding a extra auxiliary filter for added protection like he did but need to figure out just what media to use. I'm thinking of either 4a or zeolite 13x with a small percentage of color changing silica beads. Thanks for the help !

I'll check it out, when freezing outside 32 to 21 my shop only gets to around 48 degrees, the garage has my furnace in it and average is 52 to 58, but when you open it it may get to mid 40's for a while. Just thinking of the best protection for hot /cold.

If you have freezing nights, glycol is going to be my bet. I wouldn't want to split a cylinder over a random freeze.

I just put a large zeolite filter on the intake of my larger compressor. It helps an incredible amount. Instead of putting the doped silica beads in as an indicator (smart idea) I've just been watching my water trap and feeling how warm my zeolite gets since it goes exothermic when it soaks up water. It's surprising how warm those molecular sieve get.

Anti freeze usually has a table on the bottle for suggested mix according to temp.. check you weather for the lows and add a mix according to that, but I don't think having the door open for a few minute would cause freezing..
