Michigan Keith1 here thinking to add one springer at home for hft target shooting and bunny hunting. I like the hw97k but should it be in 177 or 22 cal? plus do i need yo put a new vortech spring pg3 kit ? thanks for everyones help

I prefer .177 in a hw. If i go .22 i want more power then hw offers . Hw guns can take a fps hit in .22 ( opinion)
Tune / spring and seal , i like arh . Lot of guys like arh spring with a vortek seal . Arh seals you probably got to fit it where vortek is more drop in .
In the end it comes down to what you find best after usage and experience .

I do like the black line stuff .. kinda wish hw would do a affordable hw95 black line instead of dropping the affordable standard 95 for stupid anniversary or wallnutts for 100's more that don't shoot any better ...lol

Have you shot hft before? Are you wanting to be competitive or just shoot hft targets informally with friends? If you want to shoot matches get the .177, the flatter trajectory will be a benefit. You'll also be handicapping yourself on the close targets with tiny KZ's if you shoot .22.

I Can’t speak for HFT , but for hunting and pests the HW97K .177 will take rabbits and other small animals / Birds no problem at closer ranges -I have both .177 and .22 and while different they both are good. I generally shoot my .177 mostly inside 25 yards, and have taken plenty pests out with both calibers. 
I prefer a wood stock, but got I to admit I shoot the synthetic stocked HW97 better than my other HW97’s.

I use a hw95/r9 .177 and shooting 50 yards is everyday all day for me .. and i don't use optics 98.9253% of the time . Just the factory out of the box irons . So that 97 with a decent scope should be a 50y piece of cake .
To me in my opinion is buying a gun without sights is like buying a car with out steering wheel .. then your stranded to optics only . Naaaa...

I can't really speak to your question, but share a related observation. I typically shoot at plinking targets at 75-yards. I have an interactive target called Crazy Eights, that has nine 1 3/4" round steel paddles, eight targets and one reset paddle.
My springers are primarily .20 cals with one .177 and one .22 cal. The .177 is a Webly Vulcan, that has no trouble hitting the C 8's but cannot lock them, it only wiggles them. My HW30 .20 cal. At 420 fps is like throwing mud balls at that range, but can still hit the C8's, and slam them into locking position.
For hunting you'll need to know the limits of your accuracy and power regardless of your caliber. The .22 is what most here refer to as loopy, (throwing mud balls) at longer range, but the more powerful HW's produce accuracy and power to reach out to fifty yards confidently.

Weihrauch HW95 S .177 is this the gun your talking about? if so i can buy for 730 dollars with a scope plus this gun is light? they say less than 8 pounds great and up to 950 i think you sold me can be used for hft shooting plus its main goal

Plain ol 95 or r9 .. nothing wrong with that 97 except i shoot irons and its not my kinda gun . Now it's brother the hw 77 would be my liking. . Just the 95 suits my backyard needs best and covers s that bases. As i kinda put above i like the 97 syn or the blackline. If thats what you want go for it . No disappointment there .

The hw95 and hw97k are essentially the same powerplant in different wrappers. Same spring and piston, so very similar in power. The hw97k leans a bit towards FT shooting and target work due to its greater weight and under lever design. The hw95 leans a bit more towards being a field gun. Both can shoot FT or hunt quite well. I have taken many rabbits and ground squirrels with my hw97k in .177, but it does get heavy if you carry it around in the field for long periods of time. Go with .177 and good luck choosing.

50 yard bunnies are easy for a 95 or 97. Same power as mentioned before. I go 177 for either. Think 880-900fps with standard lead pellets. 950 is for lightweight pellets that don't perform well at 50.
