Really nice “thwack” on a Dove last night

Nice shot and good scope cam footage.

Friendly note, that looks like a mourning dove and if you’re in the US, taking them with an air rifle is not legal. Eurasian doves (aka collared doves) are fair game.

So I think you’re right. I thought it was a juvenile collared dove. When I saw the footage I saw what looked like spots and was disappointed. But when I picked up the body there were no spots on it. It was a mistake on my part because I don’t shoot mourning doves.

However, it is legal to hunt mourning doves in Utah with an air gun. The laws are state by state not federal. It is not dove season in Utah right now though so still a mistake. Won’t happen again that’s for sure.

Adult Collared is a fair bit larger bird than an Adult Mourning .... Think smaller Pigeon size ;)
Yeah totally. That’s why I was looking up juvenile collared doves. We have a lot of both mourning and collared doves near my house and there’s lots of fledglings about. Either way it was a bad call on my part but I wanted to post because the sound was just sooo good haha.

Nice shot! Good on you for owning up. An identifier besides the spots (Mourning) and collar (Collared)-the Collared Dove's tail is square, the Mourning Dove's is pointed. Also the Collared dove is usually lighter in color than the Mourning dove.
Thank you for that! I usually use the calls as my first identifier. The mourning dove call is very different. Then in my eagerness to shoot I thought that shadow on its neck was the ring. Definitely the wrong choice but we live and we learn. There’s so many viable species to target near me that I try really hard to make sure I’m shooting the right ones.

Just have to say your disposition is refreshing. The world needs more of you. Especially the online world.
Thank you bro that’s very kind of you to say…. I have to say when it comes to airgun stuff it feels easy because my experience has been so incredibly positive, in theeee forums as well. It’s a big part of why this hobby has completely taken over 2025 for me. No regrets haha!

Well , anyway , it was a nice shot! We have collared doves listed in a Pa bird book . I've never seen any. They are listed as game birds here so no pellet(or slug) poppin' on them :(.
Really?!? That’s really interesting because they are actually federally listed as an invasive species. Here out west most of the rules for shooting them are actually just the rules for shooting in town. Other than that it’s no bag limits and open season year round. In Utah you can even bait a lot of the non-game species so coyotes, doves, red fox, raccoons and striped skunks. It gets a little trickier with trapping, some things require a furbearers license.

But yeah the local laws were a big part of me taking this hobby up. I wanted another excuse to be outside and something I could do all year round.

The main problem with doves is I usually see them in town in places I can’t be busting out a 10ft long Barra 250z lol. Nor do I really want to shoot 65fpe in town haha… I’m genuinely considering getting a notos and going straight gangbanger on these birds. Cruising around quiet neighborhoods at dawn and dusk and popping ‘em 😂😂😂.

The "Schwack" is addictive. I recently got my 1st slug gun & was using .22 FX Hybrids on ground squirrels. On a few of them the schwack was almost as loud as a .22 long powder burner!
100% true! I took my buddy out one Friday. He has his 17hmr and I had my barra. When he heard my slug hitting he was like “OMG!!” the very next Monday he dropped $1500 on a haji-tuned gauntlet 😂😂😂😂
