Original Gun:
.22 Benjamin Marauder LW barrel
Pellets: still experimenting but usually 25grain ish JTS are current faves but haven’t tried JSB. Apollo are trash lol.
Goals:
I don’t want to disturb neighbors but I want to be able to kill gophers at up to 40 yards (12+ FPE)
This is my first pcp and I’ve made a lot of modifications already. Some things I have already gotten rid of like the Airgun Revisions SSG and a hill depinger as I’ve found new things that are better suited. (One day I’ll be able to sell these on the classifieds
). I’ll be honest, I’ve got most of my info from ChatGPT but I feel like I’ve hit a wall.
Heres what I’ve got currently installed.
1. Hill Regulated parts kit- this is a big kit that involves; high flow transfer port, Hill Valve with lightest spring, super light aluminum hammer with PEEK striker, barrel inlet port drill bit, de-burr bit
2. Jefferson State TSS and SSG- I will say, it was weird needing to buy the TSS to use the SSG but I got extra springs out of it (one useless though) but I think this is a sophisticated SSG system so I went for it. They give you a new back end to your hammer you can screw the SSG into and make lots of adjustments on the fly.
3. Huma Regulator XXL - ChatGPT told me having more air would allow me to not hit the valve as hard for the same power so it would likely be quieter. Made sense to me.
I have some other fun accessories but that’s what’s important in terms of tuning.
ChatGPT had told me to set the regulator to 2200.. that was no good. It said oh my mistake let’s try 1800 so you can still be quiet but still have some room for extra power. The shot isn’t the problem it’s the mechanical noise of the valve and the hammer.
Right now (1800psi) I can get the noise near silent at around 550fps (25grain), but when I load up my hammer more the noise increases. I think I could get more out of my shots than I am already if I used a heavier spring but I was able to raise the power up to about 830fps but I was getting a considerable ping again, and I think my hammer was bouncing again despite the SSG.
What psi should I be aiming for? I have a feeling the back pressure on the valve is still significant enough that I am needing to increase spring preload more than necessary for the velocities I’m aiming for. As much as I love degassing (can’t use a tool with PEEK striker) pulling out my regulator and adjusting psi and then hand pumping from 0 over and over.. I’d much rather hear from someone who has some experience help me out here.
Additionally, if anyone has experience with the JSAR SSG could you help me understand how to tune with it as well? Theres two differentl Allens you adjust big/small.. the bigger one makes more sense to me, the farther in the more power in the spring. The smaller one makes less sense to me..
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!!!
