Not cherry picking a single unicorn target

Took my Thomas HPX to the range today to check my zero before tomorrow’s N50 match. The weather forecast for tomorrow is going to be pretty windy so I wanted to zero a heavier pellet. I normally shoot 25.4 MRDs but when it’s windy sometimes I opt for heavier 28 grain Grands. Is shot a few sighters with MRDs and even tried 34 Jumbo’s but my gun certainly doesn’t like those so I went back to Grands. The last bull is 5 Grands @ 50 yards.

What velocity are you shooting the grands at?

Yeah, those 28g JSB Grands are nice Tim! Good luck with the Meeker winds. 🙏

I’m guessing that they would be too heavy for either or both my RAW HM1000x .22 or my new Taipan Vet 2 .22 700mm barrel. My concern would be velocity might be too slow for the Grands. Don’t know though.

You should try them Tom and Dana. You just never know?

Yeah, I think you’re right Tim. I will order a couple of tins.

Although my two rifles already have some great shooting pellets, it wouldn’t be the first time “lower velocities” achieved better accuracy for my 50Y and under paper target challenges.

It’s pretty well known higher velocity doesn’t always equate to better accuracy. Plus, the wind factor ( heavier pellet bucking wind) is a plus if they shoot well.

Spent some time at 100Y today with my RAW HM1000X LRT. Wind 10-12 with gusts to 17 and just putting this out there … I suck at 100Y.

And I’ll eat some crow by cherry picking my one best target:

Hi Tim - laughed when I saw your post.

Most people ( especially average bench shooters like me ) suck shooting pellets at 100Y for score in that kind of wind. Don’t be too hard on yourself. We have all been there.

Besides, the groups look pretty good despite the wind.

Had a chance to shoot my (blue) RAW using 44g JSB & FX pellets as well as AEA 45g pellets. These are 5 shot groups, except for sighters, at 100Y. And yes, I still suck at 100Y.

By no means do you "suck" at 100 yards
As competition shooters, we may look at the target and think, "that will not win" ...but it doesn't mean it sucks!!
Shooting 100 yards with pellets is HARD
My RAW is more suited as a 50 yard rifle ...i can stack them , but at 100, it is varied.
A few years back, 220 was the winning scores for 100 yard BR, Now they are in the high 230's depending on the wind
Your shooting would have been in contention, so I don't think it sucks.
a winning card...no ....but a sucking card...definitely not!
my 2 cents

Mike is exactly right. Pellets at 100Y is hard with a mild wind for me.

My RAW has had some solid days at 100Y, but honestly the wind was 1-3/4 mph or less when I had 215-225 scores. For me, that was good and it was with a .22 shooting MRDs. The sweet spot is 50Y or 30-40Y target challenge cards. I seldom shoot 100Y with the RAW.

Today, 230+ is winning tournaments with expensive BR guns and equipment and great shooters who practice a lot.
