Airgun Technologies Vulcan 3 burrs near the crown

Hi all,

I have Vulcan 3 since March but I shot it only couple of times testing various pellets and slugs with mixed results, mostly bad.
Since I've put through it probably 10 or more different pellets and slugs from few different manufacturers, I thought it could benefit from a good barrel cleaning.

Unfortunately I've noticed burrs some 1/2" from the crown, probably tool marks when they made the crown.

Most of those I'll probably be able to polish out. I have VFG bore cleaning compound and it's quite a good stuff.
But, two are a bit bigger and those will not polish out with any paste,

What could I use to get out those bigger burrs?
They are not something unspeakable off but non the less, they are burrs which catch on pallets/slugs just before they exit the barrel and I believe that removing those would significantly improve on groups.

I live in SE Europe si I don't really have access to all the fancy tools and machinery and all pastes and compounds available to everyone else in the western world.

It's 700mm .22 cal, polygonal CZ barrel

If the defects are what are generally regarded as burrs, or surface scoring across the lands, the proper fix is to chop and recrown.

J-B Bore compound on felts is not a good solution for damage of this sort. Not only is the abrasive too fine but the felt carrier cannot achieve any useful surface leveling on account of being compressible. A cast lap with a more aggressive abrasive would be the way to go, though for most DIYers this approach will rank a higher level of experience than a chop and recrown.

With that said, I would encourage you to try whatever approach you are comfortable with. The fact you’re asking for advice suggests you are conscientious enough to at least do no harm, and doing so will help build experience and confidence.

The world needs more folks like you who are so knowledgeable, generous and positive.

I have made a lot of recrowns of my rifles with this:

Thank you all for advice!

Helpful info and insights!

Chop and recrown is within my ability and machinery access but in that case I would also need to shorten the shroud since Vulcan shroud configuration is dictated by barrel length protruding out of the block. I'll leave that for the second attempt if polishing the burrs fails as a first approach.

I'll post back what I've done and how but that has to be followed by test shooting to see if I've done good or a bad job.

Unfortunately, weather is terrible last few days and will continue in the same way next week. After that I won't be home for two weeks. Work away from home. So, it will probably be a month before I do any work or test shooting.

Where I live there are no indoor ranges so I'm at a mercy of weather conditions which are not good at the start of autumn.

I know this is a long forgotten thread but unfortunately today was the first chance I got to go out and shoot.

I got ucky and was able to remove the burrs near the crown and did my best to polish that part of the barrel.

Fortunately, it solved the problem!
I shot MRD's Deep and Grand between 950 and 975 quite accurately at 60m (~65 yards). MRD's Shallow dod not shoot well.

That's all that I managed to try today.
I have various slugs yet to try, JSB KO's, ZAN's, H&N's.

I usually don't shoot slugs but I bought Vulcan 3 just for the slugs so I hope to find something in my modest slug inventory that Vulcan will like.

Reg is currently around 135 bars and plenum on the large side so up to 30 grain something should work.

I don't need and don't want to push 40+ grain slugs at ludicrous speeds, a moderate but accurate tune with slugs between 25 and 30 grain is all I need and would be happy with.

Yikes man, that's a long time to not shoot. Glad you were able to make it work out for ya!

My country doesn't care for airguns, except 10m Olympic style, so there are no indoor ranges to weather the winter. There are only 2 open ranges accessible for public and the nearest is 1.5 hours drive away.
Fortunately, law does define where and how I can shoot in open public spaces but those are hard to find to be suitable, especially during colder months with mud everywhere.
On the other hand, general lack of free time and all weekends reserved for family, I'm lucky to squeeze 5-6 shooting days per year.

I'm also very pleased that I got it working without more drastic or complicated methods.
Vulcans are famous for beeing accurate with slugs so hopefully I'll also be able to do it.

It is the same in Denmark, though we have now gotten our first FT range.
Mind you when it come to the law, everything here is more regulated than in even the most totalitarian countries, so Danes will have a lot of hoops to jump if they want anything bigger than 4.5 mm.
That be unreasonable things that is at best stupid.
Really here, you need your own place to shoot, not least if you like to shoot seated at a bench.
Plenty of shooting clubs, and not very many members, but the deal is you come, shoot 25 shots or 50 and then leave.
I come to our range and shoot at least 500 before i get up to take a leak and in the summer often +1000 shots before i stop for the day

We have few clubs (regarding airguns, firearms have many hunting "clubs" but only few shooting ranges and that for clay pigeons only)
Our airguns clubs are for 10m olympic air rifle or pistol. Whole country has two FT clubs but only on paper, no ranges, no club spaces where you could go and talk to people, nothing, we don't even organize FT competitions since we can't get more than 10 people to attend.
My country's shooting federation doesn't recognise FT as a shooting sport.
All hunting and pesting is forbidden which makes airguns less attractive to many.
My country's view to sports is very simple, if it doesn't involve a soccer ball, it doesn't exist
At least we don't have calibre and power restrictions, we just have to register air rifle to keep it legal and that's just a formality and easy to do.
But, since they are collecting and applying all the stupidest laws from all around Europe, it's just a matter of time when they'll put air rifles in the same category as firearms.

I managed to squeeze a few shots yesterday.
I can now say that MRD Grand's shoot better from my Vulcan than Deep's.
Tried KO .216, terrible, about 50mm (2") groups at 50m
Tried KO .217, these were great, two groups, 15mm and 20mm (really don't know inch conversion of that)

Then the weather turned around in a matter of minutes, we got strong winds, heavy rain and hail.
At least it's a start, I've fixed the barrel problem and it shoots good.

Only problem is, it will be weeks if not months when I'll have free, alone time to shoot again.
