S.C.B.A Tank setup

so maybe I wasn't clear.. I filled it first time to 1000 and it leaked overnight to around 100 PSI.. was the o ring where the valve goes on.. so I got another o ring from the dive shop and it sealed and I went to 1500 but it leaked again down to 500 and I found the leak with my spray bottle of soap water and it was the gauge..
so I am not worried about being dot legal since I probably won't ever transport it filled and I don't plan on having it filled.. just use my own compressor..
that said all I care about is holding air and being safe using it.. it's a 98 year made.. so if it is safe to use.. looks good to me as I see no damage to the carbon fiber.. other than what appears to be a light rust stain from possibly being next to a diamond plate I can't see anything wrong with it..
if eBay is the only place to buy a reasonable price valve then I will have to ask my daughter in MN if she can order it for me..
I can't figure out how to use eBay, for that matter I don't know how to use Amazon but I can get help here with Amazon but they don't know how to order eBay..
I have no problem changing the valve I just thought I'd better ask a few people about the tank..I don't know anything about carbon fiber.. but it looks fine.. dive shop is the one that said it was out of date.. but really I have welding tanks that have been out of date multiple times and recertify and some have new valves..
guess I didn't get used to using computer much and that's a problem.. I fortunately barely get around this site.. lots of good people who actually know things and that's how we learn..
thank you
Mark
Have you tried removing the gauge, re-applying teflon tape, and snugging it back down? My brand new valve arrived with this same issue.

ok so I have a bigger problem with my tank..I saw that there's two sizes of the threads available and I did something dumb.. the two are 5/8" & 7/8" and I had changed the o ring and I knew it was bigger than 5/8" so I ordered the 7/8" without taking it off and measuring it.. got here a couple days ago and well it doesn't fit 😥
so I got my calipers and well mine is 1.125" on the threads.. which is 1 1/8" and now I can't find one anywhere.. hopefully one of you see this and can direct me to a valve..
thank you
Mark

That is a really old bottle. It appears to be aluminum wrapped in fiberglass. If it were me, I’d retire that bottle and get a newer old bottle, one that is carbon fiber wrapped. Perhaps Gerry will chime in and give his thoughts on it.

I have the same tank. When I first purchased it, it had a leak under the built in gauge as well. I was able to fix the leak myself. I removed the black plastic cap on the top of the valve, after bleeding off all of the air. Underneath is the needle for the gauge. Under the needle is a brass nut. Remove the nut. On the bottom side of the nut is a small O ring. That is where the leak was. I replaced the O ring and that fixed the leak.

thank you so much..I was beginning to think about forgetting air tanks all together.. it's just frustrating because the tank seems nice shape and yet according to the dive shop it's trash..to be honest after hearing that.. well I guess I don't think much of carbon fiber..if it was plain aluminum or steel it would be hydro tested..I really don't like how nowadays we make so much stuff that is basically trash, either new🤣 or after some time..
I'll check on the o ring because that's a much easier fix than apparently trying to get another valve..
I'd assume that since it looks good outside and inside that it's reasonably safe to use?
thank you all
Mark

I thought it was carbon fiber wrapped..at least that was what the dive shop said..

I may well be, I don’t know much, but it doesn’t look like any carbon fiber that I’ve seen ?🤷‍♂️
It is coming up on 30 years old…
so if I can get the gauge to not leak.. would the tank be safe? I understand not dot approved but I don't plan on transporting it filled and I only planned on filling with my compressor.. I'd like to know before I fill it that it's not going to explode.. to me it looks good.. I've got certified welding bottles currently from airgas that makes this one look new.. but I definitely don't need anything blowing up..
another thing I don't understand is why pretty much all the air tanks don't have lids or protective rings for the valve..

30 years old.. WOW guess I didn't do the math right.. well use? or not?? I don't want to be in the News from the local fire department 😳
In 8/24 it will be 30 years old (born in 1994).

I know a lot of people here will say there is nothing wrong with using an expired tank, and if one bought one new today, and KNEW how it was handled over the next 30 years, I might agree. But personally, not knowing what that tank has been thru, I don't think I'd use it.

A brand new tank is $600. A used one that is 15 years old cheaper. The measuring stick I'd use to determine what to do would be, "What is my life worth to me?"

Take it to a professional fill center and have it tested/serviced!!!
They would likely not test it, as it is well beyond its service life. In light of recent posts, and seeing it is not fully encapsulated in carbon fiber, personally I would replace it with a newer old bottle.
