New pumper in the house

There's a new pumper in the house. Meet my new / old Smith & Wesson model 77A this is a adult size pumper. And built like a tank. The manual says you can pump up to 20 times. So I gave it a test. I haven't shot it yet On the range, but plan on it within the next few days.

Chronographed and tested for velocity today.
Pumps……..Velocity
2…………….260
3…………….347
4…………….376
5…………….409
6…………….469
7…………….503
8…………….532
9…………….549
10……………556
11……………566
12……………573
13.............581
14.............597
16.............615
17.............632
18.............650
19.............671
20.............698

The 77A is significantly easier than a Benjamin or Sheridan on 10 pumps, going to the 20 pump max was easier than expected

The lever arm length from rear of pump arm to the pivot pin on a Benjamin model 317 is 13 inches. On the SW -77A, it measured 18 inches more leverage easier pumping.

That sounds like an Oldie but Goodie pumper,
I have to look the info up on that one. Cal 22 or 177?

I have been playing around/tuning my new Dragon Fly II, 22 cal,
to see what it's got under the hood, here is the averages as tested so far,
I want the 10 pump results.

On the 1-5-10 tests, I had 16 test results/average, on the 15 pumps tests,
I only had 6 tests result/average that went to the full 15 pumps,

1 pump tests average for 16 tests =273fps
5 pump tests average for 16 tests =638fps
10 pump tests average for 16 tests =720fps
15 pump tests average for 6 tests =828fps

Tia,
Don

I shot it several more times at 20 pumps, I belive the pump warmed up and sealed better.

Your velocity testing confirms my experiences with a couple healthy 77s I've owned. Compared to most adult oriented pumpers, I consider the 77 overgrown and under-powered. Longer pump strokes + more of them = less power. Suffice to say I find them very underwhelming.

As excerpted from Airgun Chronicles- Thirty Years Of Airgun Testing And Competition -

.22 Smith & Wesson 77A multi-stroke pneumatic, resealed by Mac-1

14.3gr Crosman Premier, 10 pumps, 10 shot string- Low= 551, High= 593, ES= 42, SD= 20, Average= 577 FPS/10.6 FP

What pellets did you use in your testing?

Used Crosman premier. More pumps but easier ones than Benjamin or Sheridan. I shot I a bit last night 10 times. It seems to be fairly accurate. Will know more after i spend some time with it. I consider it a beautiful gun. Built well with some innovative thinking. And a piece of airgun history. We all purchase our airguns for different reasons.

If you have ever been inside one the" overgrown size " is due mainly to the trigger block/ cocking mechanism and hammer spring.
