Time and pressure

So i go to the 50y rack to hang a card and i noticed this crack in the steel backstop plate.

Dont rember it there yesterday or my first card today ( maybe just not notice it ). But being the most shot it's somthing that over time and amount of lead pellets has hammered hardened the steel to cause it to crack.. same reason a large bell cracks over time..lol thickness is / was just under 3/16 kinda a split between 1/8 and 3/16.

I’m guessing that discs are made from some reasonably good steel. Meaning a good amount of carbon. Maybe even heat treated a bit, which makes it hard of course. If you cut out your shapes with a cutting torch, it creates what is called a Heat Affected Zone, HAZ for short. The HAZ can be hard and chip or crack easily if not annealed.
Being the disc was/is possibly free, not a big deal. And I’m guessing you shoot far enough away that if it fragmented it would not fly very far.
I shoot at a 1/16” thick x 4” x6” piece of stainless steel at 50 yards. I won’t say there are thousands of impacts but there are a lot. Pretty dented up but holds up well. Gives a nice audible feedback when struck.

I cut with a Metabo . Far cheaper the gas/o2

I figure the dics blades last forever grinding away in the fields it should out last plain ol carbon steel. It's tough stuff

Ya stainless is soft due to the nickle in it to make it stainless..

I used the disc blades for my target critters .. it dont flinch..lol

I have a disc blade hanging in a tree at the ranch. It has absorbed countless 9mm and 5.56 rounds all fired under 50 yards. Think yours will hold up well under air gun usage
