Scope and Mounts for HW100?

A few days ago I posted about using an HW50 in .177 for rabbit hunting. I got lots of helpful responses which led me down that path. However, I have a great opportunity to purchase an HW100 at a great price so it looks like I will go that direction instead. The HW100 has no scope, so may I get your folks' recommendations for an appropriate scope and one piece mounts for my rabbit hunting venture? In addition, would I want the scope to be a mil-dot and fixed parallax? As I mentioned before, I am a relatively new shooter, and completely new to rifles and hunting. And yes, i will take a hunter safety course. TIA!

I prefer a first focal plane scope with an MOA/MIL tree style reticle and parrallax adjustable down to 10yds. Second focal plane works absolutely fine as well and so does a standard mildot reticle but adjustable parallax is still a priority to me.

How much are you willing to spend on an optic?
I'd like to keep it to $300 for the scope and mount. My understanding is I can get a reasonable scope in that range?

You absolutely can. My personal favorites are the Athlon optics. You should be able to find the Talos BTR Gen 2 4-14x44 for around that price. If I remember correctly you weren't planning on shooting much more than 50yds, correct?

TBH my shooting distance is more up to my imagination at this point in time since I can't really base it on experience. My imagination tells me that 50 yards is a far distance to reliably shoot a rabbit in the head. If I can get to the point of shooting something the size of a quarter from that distance I would be ecstatic and warming up the smoker. If I can get to the point of shooting from further out than that, all the better, but my gut tells me I would almost certainly be shooting at animals from inside 50 yards. Does that seem right?

I think your head is in a great place here. You're keeping your expectations and goals reasonable and its a nice change of pace to see from a new shooter. A lot of guys come barging into the game with their brand new M3s thinking they're going to be easily taking rabbits at 200yds right off the bat.

Get your gun setup and them just practice. Learn your holdovers for range and what wind will do. There are tons of videos on YouTube about precision shooting that covers anything from techniques to math to general theory. There is a lot to learn and you'll never stop learning. Its what makes this sport so much fun.

I actually called Airguns of Arizona to ask about this scope that they have on special.

The gent who answered told me this scope is for rifles, not air rifles, which I did not really understand since (1) they sell air rifles and not firearms and (2) the HW100 has no recoil to speak of as it is a PCP.

Any thoughts on whether this would be suitable?

If I shot a rabbit from 200 yards I'd tire myself out from walking to retrieve it, lol.

I've never used those scopes so I can't say for certain how good they are. Rifle scopes are air rifle scopes. There really isn't much difference there. The only thing you need to worry about are rifle scopes on piston guns similar to your 50S. Springers, especially untunes and hard hitting ones, can be very rough on optics. On a PCP it really doesn't matter though. You just want to make sure the scope focuses down to normal airgun ranges, hence my preference for a 10yd minimum parallax.

I see what he meant now. That optic has a 100yd fixed parallax which will make the scope go out of focus the closer you are to the target. The higher the magnification the blurrier the scope will be. Thats not ideal.

This one on AOA has a 100 yard fixed parallax.

Quarter size groups at 50 yards is a piece of cake for the HW100. Very nice gun.

Im not up on of the newer brands but some budget scopes I've liked in the past with better than budget performance:

Simmons Whitetail (not new versions) well built and good glass (adjustable objective)
Simmons 44 mag (older version) well built with quality glass (adjustable objective)
Bushnell elite (high quality Adjustable objective)
Aeon sidewheel scopes
UTG sidewheel scopes
Nikko Nighteater sidweheel (better of three SW's)

These would need to be found as previously owned.
