Tuning HW57 w/Vortek PG4 kit

I pulled the PG4 kit out of my 50S and installed it into my HW57. The full length spring put out 12.8ftlbs with JSB 8.44gr pellets. Way to much for this little gun. I took off 1.5 coils and re-chronoed the gun and was still sitting at 12.8ftlbs. Chopped another 1.25 coils and was at 11.7fpe. I decided to give the gun a proper testing from there. The 8.44gr were a bit scattered but grouping at about an inch at 30yds. I switched to the H&N Baracuda Match 10.65gr and was putting them at 660fps for about 10.2fpe. Well wouldn't you know it, they grouped like a champ.

5 shot groups at 30 yards.

I'll keep playing with it tomorrow to see how consistent it is but as of right now I'm pretty thrilled with it. I may end up pulling another 1/2-3/4 coil off to get it to 10.7-11fpe with the 8.44gr. We'll see.

I just picked up a HW50s and have a Vortek PG4 HO kit and piston seal coming in a couple days. I do not really want full power output of 12 ft lbs, If I had 10 or so I would like the shot cycle and cocking effort better and it would have plenty for 30yd squirrels. When you cut a coil off the Vortek spring it appears that you leave the spring open, polish the end and fit it back onto the spring guide. Is that correct?

No polishing necessary. Cut the coil and just clean off any burrs and you're good to go. The Vortek kits make it really easy.

Thank you! let us know how this progresses, I have an interest in the HW 57, put was put off by accuracy reports. I shot my new HW30s today with a Williams peep with JSB 7.33. 10 yds. Nice groups, dime sized. I don't know if I'll stay with the open sights, as my eyes aren't what they used to be. I love how the guns handles with the Williams. Shot the new HW50s as well. It has an old Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5x on it and it shot dimes at 10yds, although I pulled a couple. It has a very solid "Thunk" shot cycle and a little jump with the stock setup. No twang. I need to order a Chrono, I can see that already. So while I wait on that I'll just put a tin through each. Also thinking about a Hawk 2-7x. Enough for 30 yd hunting.
