Air Archery target

So in the past I had to get creative with my targets because Airbolts just blew through my standard archery targets like they where made of butter even targets I used to shoot my 100 # longbows with 1000gr arrows,...Airbolt would just disappear and fly well past.

I used to put together thick foam then a pack full of old clothes and finally a ply in the back and used blunts so they would find it harder to penetrate and not get stuck in the ply when they hit it.

Anyway, a very nice member of this forum ,......That I still think he's absolutely crazy :ROFLMAO: sent me what is supposed to be a great archery target, the " Hurricane CAT 5 "
The member, that I cannot stop thanking for it is @Ezana4CE

So today if my neighbors leave I will test it with some AirBolts

i have used the "BLOB" target while using excalibur crossbows since
2008. and continue to use them with the texan, dragon claw, hammer and piledriver
big bore airguns. they will not pass-thru and you need tooling to remove the arrow.
i dont know if you know about excalibur, there the leader in FPE in shafted projectiles.
we hunt with them year round on predators here on the farm 👨‍🌾

Yeah, my main concern is to remove the arrows from the target, good thing about using blunts is that they cut a wider hole then a field point.

when shooting at that speed and weight, you need to practice with your hunting broadhead.
pick one of the bunch to just test with.
field tips and blunts at that speed and weight, i would not trust for hunting. but thats just me.
that has been proved to me with AV airbolts. field or blunt tips do not follow my broadhead's (G5 striker mag 125gr)
POA /POI. but again, thats my results.

My Snuffers and Woodsmans at 20 yards hit exacly where my Field points or Blunts hit.

OK, OK first shot ever with the Carbine and this batch of arrows, The carbine is zeroed at 20 yards with 200gr flat nose bullets.

Well, well penetration was very good and stopped just before the fletching ( the bale might have helped a bit on that ) so the target is valuable for the discipline.

Accuracy was pretty much spot on for Open sights at 20 yards,....very happy with that.

Now I'm going to see how hard is to get that arrow out :ROFLMAO:

@AirArcher66 I have noticed that when working to remove air bolts that penetrated the target 8”-10” in sometimes I’d have to twist or rotate the bolts while pulling out of the target and the field tips would often be loose upon removal. Then I’d have to finger tighten them down before the next shot. How do you think you lost your insert? I assume your insert is the silver piece I’ve been calling the ferule. Also, so far I have only shot into my target from 40-50 yards out.

So you have 3 components in the front of the arrow,

the insert, that is where the field point, blunt or Broadhead srews in,...the point of course, and then you have what I call the crown guide which is a sleve that goes over the shaft and it's kept in place when you screw your point in.

Possibly since I had to cut my shaft and consecuently re-glue the insert in I might not have done it to factory strenght,

I was twisting, pulling, tweking but the crown guide is so much wider then the shaft and the arrow was so deep in there that it probably got hung up and pullet the insert out the shaft,....no biggie, I can buy more inserts from 3Rivers

@AirArcher66 What sort of velocities are you getting from shooting 200 grain bolts from your Rex? Is the bolt 200 grains or just the bolthead?
200gr is the bullet I shoot out of this gun to zero it in or when I shoot lead rather then arrows ( that is why I don't like dedicated arrow shooters, I want to shoot both back to back )

the Bolt weights just shy of 400gr with the point or broadhead being 125gr,

velocity filled to 200 BAR is 505 fps, today I filled to 240 BAR and I would guess velocity is quite a bit more but I did not chono it

@AirArcher66 I see. Don’t know why I read “bullets” as “bullet tips.” Maybe I was thinking of the blunts as flat-nose bullet tips. Seems that your bolts are slightly lighter than mine. Nice archery setup too with hay bales as backing. 505 fps from a 200 bar fill!?! Looks like you’re getting some serious power from that carbine. What’s the furthest that you feel comfortable taking a shot on a pig with your Rex shooting air bolts? Are you to the point where you’re strictly an iron-sight hunter or will you use a scope from time to time?

@Ezana4CE For me Air Archery is all about thick envinroment, on the groung looking for a shot opportunity that will be most like it be at close quarters with the hog probably moving and taking the shot offhand that is why I like the open sights, a straight 1-4 scope would be nice too but I like my gun light and nimble, This REX at 5 pounds is a fantastic mountains/bush gun.

An arrow with a good broadhead will be effective as long as it gets there, as we say in archery I can lob an arrow in the air and if you are where the arrow lands it will go through you even if you 300 yards away.

I have made a lot of bag targets for our club Over the years. No good for broad heads but stop field points at 500 fps. Arrows go about 1/2 way to the fletching and pull out with 2 fingers. No lost tips either. No problem stopping my crossbow or .50 Wingshot with bolts. Use a burlap or plastic grain bag and stuff it with plastic. You can use the heavy plastic wrap used to wrap batteries on pallets. But it’s not the best. When I worked at the hospital, I got the light/thin plastic they used to cover the clean linens. It doesnt heat up and stick to the arrow shafts. Walmart grocery bags work well. Don’t use used boat shrink wrap. It will stick to the arrow shaft and doesn’t pull out easy.
also, hang the bag instead of setting against another objec. The bit of swing the arrow gives the target also helps stop penetration.
