FX Boss change in behavior

I've been using a Donny Ronin on my Boss for over a couple years now. It's always been trouble free & I can shoot it more precisely than any gun I own. Was helping a friend this past Friday rid his property of rabbits & ground squirrels &, as always, it was shooting stupidly accurate. All of my kills were were 110-140 yards. The last two shots of the day I noticed "smoke" from the barrel while looking through my scope. I came to realize that those last two shots were clipping on the Ronin. Not too badly but enough to leave a mark on the inner orifice near the end of the moderator. This is aberrant behavior for this setup. Breech seal is good, ran a patch or two through the barrel but not enough dirt or debris to cause clipping (the Boss only NEEDS cleaning once or twice a year at most). Going pesting tomorrow & I'm hoping I'll get a chance to check my zero today & the clipping issue before the "hunt". Wondering if anyone else has experienced similar.

I know you take good care of your rifles, but is it possible that it could have incurred a bump at the muzzle during your shooting session? The reason I ask, between the length of the factory Boss barrel, and the addition of a suppressor, there is a lot of leverage exerted if something should occur at the muzzle. You are probably aware of this, but, most suppressors have one or two light marks inside the end cap. They look a lot like clipping damage, but they result from the hangers used in the production process. Good luck, please post your findings.

Thanks Ed but been shooting the exact same arrangement for over 2 years & this is the 1st time that, or ANYTHING else like it, has occurred. The marks on the Donny were definitely from clipping. I'm not stressing about it. Worst that could happen is I shoot without the moderator & re-zero the scope. I believe I might have figured it out as I found 4 pellets that were not JSB 44.75's in the tin I was loading from. I will try to investigate further today.

That's interesting. I would not think the specific pellet would have that effect. But then, I could write a book about what I don't know.

Gerry by chance did the ronin loosen up? It doesn’t take much, just a CCW turn of 1/8 turn will tilt the moderator slightly down and cause a clip.

If I owned a Boss, and because of its long unsupported barrel, I would enlarge that opening at the end of the moderator slightly with two drill bit sizes above what it’s sized at now to guarantee clipping never happens. Just a suggestion

Went pesting yesterday using the Boss. There were 4 of us walking the property and, in total, took out SIXTY ground squirrels! No problems with the Boss. I think Augie (Bigragu) might have been correct about the Ronin loosening up slightly. My gun shot as accurately as ever.

During one of my days shooting four hours straight before RMAC I had noticed my Huggett snipe had loosened and was causing all kinds of crazy groups, but not clipping. Just that slight tilt forward. I went to the local Ace hardware and in their bin section found rubber washers 1/16” thick and the ID/OD fit perfectly over the fx 1/2-20 and flushed out to the shroud’s circumference like it was meant to be(can’t remember size, if you mix it with calipers or bring your shroud into ACE you’ll find the ones I’m talking about).

When I cinch up my moderator it stays put now. I’ve never been one to ham fist tight a moderator as when I remove it I don’t want the rear cap of the moderator staying fused to the shroud then now I need tools. I like snug only, and the rubber washer allows that with no more loosening while shooting

Augie, I know this is an old post but I don't think I ever thanked you for the washer/moderator suggestion. I have rubber washers on all 3 guns now & never have problems.
