Airgun Technologies  Vulcan 3 - why I like this gun !

turn the regulator in high power mode :) and you will see the difference;-)
Thanks...if I want to shoot slugs, I use my firearms to actually shoot...slugs .

Most users don't bother with pellets. This thing is a slug shooting beast. Especially after the plenum is reversed.
I've seen some excellent results.
Not so much all. If I want to shoot slugs, I use my firearms to actually shoot...slugs .
My Vulcan 3 shoots nothing but pellets. Sometimes, light ones, sometimes, heavy ones, but always pellets.

Moderator Design

Steve,

Your experience overlaps with that of many people. Note, I did not say all people.

The ideal number of baffles depends on the rest of the design, including the length of the moderator. The longer the moderator, the more added baffles help. Conversely, 6 baffles in a 3" long moderator will be less effective than only three. I see this "rule" as more about baffle spacing than the number of baffles. Ideal baffles spacing also depends on the ID of the tube; and the muzzle pressure and volume of the airgun involved.

Some designs work better at low power. Others at high power. There is no one size fits all solution that works best; unless it is the one you are selling. I make no claims about the performance of my moderator designs; other than repeating what people who have evaluated them report to me; or on open forum.

What do you mean by inverted cone? Cones should meet the projectile and airflow with their small end first to work properly. To me, that is the "right way round", not inverted. :)

How one defines "better" has a large bearing on which type of design and construction wins. Ultimately which units sell best are "better". Although brand recognition often trumps objective or subjective comparisons.

As you have a clear view about what works, I would like to know your opinion about the effectiveness of vent holes in the sides of many commercial moderators?
Vent holes do not work in my experience. Either within chamber to chamber or externally. In fact they make the report louder.

Umarex  Colt SAA BB

OA length is about the same but the SAA/M29 cartridges are fatter. One will start into a Dan Wesson chamber but only go about 1/3 in.

I can't imagine why you would want to do that.
just so you can use the Colt SAA cartridge in the Dan Wesson.. just like my PCP guns are all 22 one kind makes some things simpler.. it could add up to a lot of money for spare cartridges if you had several guns that were not interchangeable.

Results  N50 2023 Open Grove Club Champs

Here at Open Grove we hold our yearly best club shooter competition of best 7 matches. This is the leaderboard and resulting top 3 class champs. Awards will follow. These guys are terrific shooters and a really good humans. We will work hard to get Dennis & Ed to Raton next year so you can meet them too.
Happy New Year! It's been a good one.

There’s not a better bunch of guys than the folks at Open Grove who taught me so much this year. And here is to a fantastic 2024 season for all!

Events  EFT - consolidation of events

@Str8tshooter - so if this is already available, the trick is to get people to USE it

Agree, my thoughts were if the Calendar was utilized, then I/we could copy that info on our own Calendars. Other than that, maybe a thread specific post and use the email notification function as a reminder?

Huben  Dry firing a Huben semi auto...

Thanks. I found that video to be very helpful. What might not be clear from it - because they don't let the gun sit long before firing it again in the animation - is that the normal resting position on the vertical closing valve is in the down position. It is designed to not fully seal at the top, and during the shot, when the valve is in the up position cutting off the air flow, a little bit leaks by it. When closed it cuts off the air flow pressure thus allowing the spring to reset the firing valve (and this allows the trigger to reset too). Once the firing valve is closed, the pressure above the closing valve rises to regulated pressure, and then the closing valve resets to the down position allowing full air flow (based on its setting) on the next shot.

The other thing that happens when the closing valve initially closes is that the pressure drops in the piston that drives the magazine advancement so it retracts. As the pressure rises in that piston (which is all connected in the plenum space after the closing valve) after the firing valve closes, the rod drives the magazine forward to the next round - and then the last part of the trigger reset takes place making the gun ready to fire again. It is 100% mechanical, no air is vented to drive anything (all vented air is used on the projectile), and it is very fast in how it cycles - the mag can be dumped in under 5 seconds if you are good (enabled because the trigger only mechanically resets the second stage, meaning the movement to fire again is only a millimeter or so, depending on how the trigger is set).

It's just a brilliant set up. Interestingly, I also have a Sidewinder and the closing valve on it must work differently somehow, despite the obvious similarity of the guns - the Huben gives a tiny blip of air when dry fired, but the Sidewinder gives a huge dump of air when dry fired. The sidewinder can easily be emptied by dry firing (although it is better to do it off the regulated pressure gauge) while the Huben would take forever (they recommend removing the firing valve reset spring, replacing the rear cover, and firing the gun to completely drain the reservoir - off course if you only want to empty the regulated space that can be done with the factory regulator alone - just reduce pressure to zero).

Crosman  A most satisfying shoot

Those are a couple of my favorite PCPs,simple to shoot one holers at 25 yards with the Challenger, the prod is great too.Nice shooters you got.
This HFT Challenger will give my BSA Goldstars, Air Arms S510, Daystate Revere and Wolverine and my Brocock Ghost or any of my other FT rigs a serious run for the money ! This is especially true when I throw my Sightron S-Tac 4-20X50 with the MF4 reticle on it!

Can crosshairs on a scope be realigned?

Send it back, that is unless the warranty has expired, then too bad so sad, like with my 13 year old 8-32 Hawke Sidewinder that lives in the bone pile of old busted scopes because the warranty is only to the original purchaser and for only 10 years.

Having everything perfectly level isn't "all that". I don't pursue that particular perfection and have won plenty of matches. When I missed it wasn't because the scope wasn't plum and leveled. I either muffed the shot or got the wind wrong.
