Moderators on Benchrest Rifles

Makes sense that Justin hasn't heard of us. After all, we're on the opposite side of the country and our events typically only attract 12-17 participants. And other than the big(er) 3-4 competitions, I'm not sure I could name another club regularly doing 100-yard benchrest matches. The ASA, other than providing the rules and target dimensions, doesn't keep track of any results. Our ASA cards are the same as the PAC, and I've heard, but not been able to confirm, that it matches RMAC. I wish someone had a table listing the ring sizes everyone uses so we can compare. Thinking about that, it would make more sense to unite 100-yard BR under a single organization and standardize the targets.

We have only a few FSA members that participate in airgun events (the club is primarily trap and skeet). Non-members make up the majority of our participants. We do draw many non-members from all over OH, KY, IN, WV and PA. And sometimes from as far away as Atlanta, GA. The only FSA member to go to RMAC (or any of the big matches) was Ryan Spanagel (previous years). Some of our regulars, Joe Polanco, Tim Swan and Robert Steele, were at RMAC this year. We've had the Gardner's and Luke Sowinski from Skout come over from PA for at least one match. And Jerry Kornfield has come over from PA twice.
Thanks. Other than practice, there are no 100Y BR matches near San Diego. Sounds great to have a monthly 3 card match. I saw all the guys you mentioned at RMAC. Luke did well.

Modification and Customization cont’d

I thought this extended ”Frankinshroud” concept for the .357 Bulldog was interesting. It was offered as an alternative to a plastic moderator. I wonder what the total length is.

Tuning cont’d

Brocock/BRK  Atomic XR keeps blowing my mind…

Just came in from a nighttime plinking session at 25 and 40 yards with my Atomic XR with Zulus 5-20x atop. I see the hits, repeat the hits and am still left astounded at what’s possible. Sending at pieces of sidewalk chalk, scored to rodent head sizes… Got me excited to go after some rats…🤓 The reasons I’m not going ratting tonight? Other than being old man tired? My wife said no…🙈🙄 That said, the Atomic is a trouble maker and whispered… maybe tomorrow night? This light little gun has a giant hold on me through its performance afield at reasonable, practical pesting ranges. Simply a Grand Slam Home Run by BRK Brocock…

P.S.: Best part is all that deadly accuracy with CPHPs…

N/A  Summer Solstice Range Time, HW97K and Walther LGU

Another trip to the range after work this evening. I shot seven 10-shot groups at 50 yards with my HW97K 20 cal and one group with my LGU. It was a perfect evening to shoot the air rifles due to comfortable temps and nearly zero wind. I wrote wrong hash mark next to group six, but I probably should have written correct hash mark. The following nine shots were using the incorrect hash mark. The Baracudas drop two marks lower than the JSBs, even though they are close to the same weight.

Jumpin Jack Flash

I was out testing my side shot and old phone, getting it dialed in. I went in for some dinner and came out to grab the rig and put it away. We'll I noticed this guy having out at the feeder and took a shot. I completely forgot I was low on air and I believe I went low. It hit, just don't think it killed him.

Couldn't find him or a blood trail. Bummer.

Rig used was my np03 bottle gun I'm still finishing up. I'll post later about that.

WOW , now that's a jumper all right !

Larger caliber CO2 revolvers?

I would be great to have something like this with at least pesting power! There was something I recall of a Remington rolling block style air rifle! the cartridges were the pressure vessel, but it was plagued with problems. Something set up like that with a cylinder like the Russian naganet (sorry bad spelling) revolver that pushes up to seal with the forcing cone would be really cool! Maybe not a practical design however.
Was that the Rolling block rifle that was on Mac1s website for a long time? I always thought about buying one.

Airgun Heaven

Yes, know of them and bought from them. Better pricing on L1 barrels in my experience. Bought a .177 barrel from them, over protected and solid boxing. Hope to get a 350mm setup from them at some point - extension and barrel in .22 caliber. Unfortunately I missed out on the .20 and .30 250mm barrels. Give them some business if you can!

HW/Weihrauch  Barakuda spring

Not sure if I understand what you are saying, but I did not swap pistons, just spring and guide.
What he is saying is-

Over the years of production, the thickness of the head of the piston has varied in dimension.
If you look at the interior of the piston through the cocking slot, at the very front, there is a bearing surface for the end of the spring to seat on. Over the years, through design change, or machining tolerances changing, that area can vary in how deep the spring seats in relation to the piston head.
IF you have a model that has a thicker section at the front of the piston, it will decrease the free space that you have available for the spring to compress. Couple that situation with a spring that is a smidgen longer when compressed, and you could be running into a coil bound spring.
Be sure that there are no thrust washers lodged in the piston, or that there is no tophat in there from someone else kitting up the rifle at some point.

@MDriskill can competently comment on just how much variation he has observed in piston head thickness hopefully, and this can give you a better idea of what compressed spring dimension that your rifle will tolerate.

Airforce Body Count!

As hunting PCPs, they are considered top-notch. From small to large game, they are the most commonly used. I own a .308; the single-shot mechanism has never posed an issue.
My initial thought process on these guns were that they were great for large game/small game hunting due to not I having to shoot a lot, and because they always advertised 1in groups at 50yd. For pest removal of iguanas this just seemed impractical and unethical. But I was clearly proven wrong with this platform. It's not my first airforce, I had a .177 talonss but I couldn't get it to group well with the slugs I wanted, and I had a talon tunes condor .30 that was good on power, but was too long and bulky. It looked like I was walking around with an rpg lol.

FWB  Sport

I recently purchased the Sport from Champions Choice. Shipped to me in 48 hrs. This to me is a magnum springer compared to a R1 which I thought was harsh and now is much more pleasant. How ever the 34's are still harsh. Outside of that it's a decent rifle on par with the HW's. Fit and finish wise. Am hoping it will settle down the more I use it. Looked to me that it was hardly used for the gun itself almost spotless save for a slight mark from scope mount or diopter. About 350 pells through it so far and gets best groups from heavy weights. Oh and Champions Choice are truly top notch in my book.

Hatsan  Barrage regulated with a 1.1L bottle

Bought a Huben Power Dream Universal adjustable regulator. After an initial bobble by Huben with the M18-1.5 rifle interface i got it mounted on my Barrage (Nick at Huben was awesome!). This is a Z-type regulator so it offsets the bottle another 25mm or so from the shroud. I have a 1.1L CF bottle (85mm diameter) that I could then mount on the rifle. Took a bit of trial and error, the Barrage has a very picky interface and only certain female M18-1.5 interfaces will seal up proper. Got that all solved, set the regulator to 200 bar, filled the bottle to 300 bar. Set up on my "bench" and plinked away, Around 160 H&N Barracuda Match .22 21.14 grain pellets later the bottle pressure finally dropped below 200 bar. I may bring it down to 150-170 bar but the indexing likes 200bar with the moderator mounted (and a 1.4mm x 80mm x 20mm return spring). All this added around 1lbs to an already heavy beast, whole thing weighs in at 14.5lbs. Glad i almost always shoot it from the bench.

Modified the stock, cut off the barrel support so I'll want a couple barrel bands. Jake at JB3DPD.com is great at custom work like that.

Unlike most adjustable regulators the Huben is rock solid and does not drift even a little bit. Pricey but well worth it if you want an externally adjustable regulator. Only negative is to adjust downward you must drain the bottle. Going up is no problem, just turn the 3mm allen head.
