You know I always admire your work.
About the best you can do is counterbore the screw holes slightly oversize. Make screws with a shank same diameter as the counterbore. We need "3 threads in the work" minimum. Install them. Now cut them off slightly proud. Peen the tops of the screws to fill out the holes tightly before you machine them off. Now the marks are at least perfectly round and virtually seamless.
I have tried it. Because of the round top they still show. I just deal with them when I have a block With screw holes ..I have welded them with satin bluing and got better results. As it hides but I would rather not deal with uncontrolled heat blobs. Round screws flush are better looking to me. The best blocks are the HW WITH NO SIGHTS obviously.

Garmin Chrono.....first thoughts

I have used chronys for about 30 years. The Garmin is the most user friendly and convenient by a mile. In a year I have taken it to range more than the other 3 in all that time. I can find fault with ice cream but why, I don't have anything to prove. I like both, the Garman and ice cream.

How to update the firmware on a True Ballistics or Pocket Chronograph

It was super easy. After locating the document https://www.exc.fi/tbc/update/ I downloaded the appropriate file (based on MAC or PC), connected the TBC to my MAC, pressed one button, held another button, selected the file and... 💥 it took less than a minute to transfer and update.

USARB Class Updates for next season

Greetings,

I have a few USARB announcements.

1st, I have taken over target sales after Joe Fredrick did a fantastic job for so many years. Thanks Joe!
Target costs and shipping has increased a fair amount. Should be no surprise there, we haven't had target's
printed in several years. I've worked with the WRABF to get the latest target files and specifications.
We have targets for the 4 distances classes now. 25, 50, 75 and 100 meters.
I have 25 and 50 meter. New color and format printed and in stock. As those are what we use the most.
I have the 75 and 100 meter being quoted presently. I don't plan to have many printed until people start shooting those classes.
There is a lot of crossover with N50 and EBR at those distances, so time will tell if they'll be used at all.
Another change is I'm selling targets to individuals now not just USARB clubs. I've gotten so many requests I've decided to give it a try,
Clubs get targets and shipping at my cost. Individuals pay a slightly higher cost. Minimum order is 100 targets. Prices and my contact info can be found on the USARB website.

2nd, We will be removing the USA Sportsmen's class for lack of participation.

3rd, We are adding a new and somewhat controversial class. It's called USA Hunter Target
It is a hybrid Hunter Field Target and 25 meter Benchrest class.
Details should be up on the USARB website later this week.
It's basically Hunter Field Target guns shot off buckets and sticks (bipods) at our 25 meter targets at 25 meters and scored accordingly.
Not as easy as it sounds. It can be shot simultaneously with a benchrest match.
The concept is to attract Field Target shooters to benchrest. It can be shot indoors or outdoors and regarded as good
practice for FT shooters. We've been shooting it localily this past summer and fall and has been very well received.

That's it for now.
I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming season.

Interesting idea...

Importance of scope zero

Lol ... while a practice a different miens to achieve a definitive Zero range, once done the POI to POA results are stellar 10 to 55 in the Field target game I play.
At a level of play where one can live & die by the accuracy of there D.O.P.E. information used, learning that scope height, velocity consistency, pellets BC and especially a scopes sub tension scaling is finely calibrated so the data one uses for distance correction is never in question !!!! So one can concentrate on other factors prior to taking the shot over and over again threw out an FT match. Close enough seldom works out !!!
So apparently it IS rocket science?

just kiddin

Tuning  How do you choke a barrel ?

I heard that HW barrels were choked by stamping the front sight dovetail into them. I looked at the barrel on my 95 and sure enough the dovetail is stamped and not machined. A pellet tells me the choke starts right where that dovetail is.

I have no idea if that's true. But it seems plausible and there is circumstantial evidence to support it.

Hammer forged barrels are formed around a mandrel with a choke on it. At least that is what YouTube says. If you had that forging machine you could do it however you wanted to.

I've always wondered how a button rifled barrel was choked. I assumed rolling it between 2 shoes in a press or pushing a hot blank into a tapered die. But that is just an assumption based on zero first hand knowledge.

Barrels are soft stuff. A good hammer swinger could put a perfect choke on a cold barrel. It would screw up the finish but I'd bet it would work.

I'd drill me a hole in an anvil and hone a little taper into it. Heat the barrel up sub red and tap it down into the taper. Drift it out when it cooled and see if it worked. If it didn't I'd do it again and tap it farther into the taper. I bet you could get a good choke with just a little experimentation.

I'm not sure how much reduction in bore diameter you would need. Nor how much length. I've read a little about it and it seems to be a bit of a black art.

New AEA SLUGS

I started messing with the AEA .25 49,2 gr out of my Raptor. OMG they make a serious racket hitting my steel trap/ backstop, 90 ft #'s Sadly, I can't get any real consistency. I've burnt through almost a tin of them and a LOT of air. I could tell I was pumping too much air out so.....I'm going to buy a few more tins and take my time to see if they'll work. I really want to smack ground squirrels with a sledge hammer.
I've been looking at those also.
Could you measure the length for me?
I'm wondering if they will fit my mags.

Labradar LX.....anyone?

I got the Garmin. The 'LX is pretty much the same thing. The one advantage (or maybe disadvantage) is that the LX has a metal chassis, and may be more durable. OTOH, I've owned probably a dozen chronos and durability (within reason) hasn't been an issue with any of them. I also have an original LabRadar, and based on my experience with their lousy phone app, I wouldn't have high expectations for the LX app if that's important to you. (When the LR app worked, it was nice to have, but the Garmin and LX are different than LR1 and I only use the Garmin app to rename and save strings).

Brocock/BRK  Left hand BRK

I think most older lefties are more comfortable with a right handed action if they grew up shooting mostly right handed guns over many years. They feel more natural, at least they do to me. As long as nothing is sticking out in my face or hitting me LOL. Also if they have an ambi cheekpiece on the stock all is usually good. Shotguns on the other hand are more critical in fitting as alot have cast on or cast off of the stock which can make a big difference in fit.

Other  12yr old daughter...new shooter

So my HW30s is due to arrive on Monday. What do I need to do to get it ready? I have read of people cleaning the barrel before ever firing them, as an example.
That gun will become your favorite, so you will have to buy another one for your daughter.

Snowpeak  Snowpeak M16 Barrel breech thread

I do not have a M16 (yet, I want one in 177) so I don't know but if I had one and wanted to know I would measure the OD with digital calipers (set to metric and assuming a little clearance) and then use a thread pitch gauge to get the thread pitch. The latter are inexpensive and very handy. I use the one in my set of taps and dies. I'm sure Amazon would sell you a metric thread pitch gauge for a few dollars.
The problem is I don't have this type of barrel. I need someone that owns/worked on this kind of barrel that can provide this information.

Crosman  Crosman 66 Powermaster

View attachment 504517View attachment 504518
I discovered this 66 Powermaster mixed in with my dozen or more 760s. According to the serial number I believe it was made in 1999. I must have bought it with several 760s and didn't notice it was a 66. It shoots but weakly. I will try some oil and see if that brings it back.
It was made in September 1995

WHACK!

This one was the look out. I could hear the bulk of them down below the house. I was surprised to not see a few fly by after I plunked this one but they did not. Just shut up and disappeared. I've called them in woods before and they will come in flying low making no noise. You can hear their wings cutting through the air. No doubt one of our smarter birds.
