Boerne (TX) Field Target Club Match Saturday, Jan 11, 2025

Hello Fellow Shooters,
We are cancelling the match this Saturday due to weather events this week preventing timely set up of the targets and temps below freezing at site-in time on Saturday. Not unusual this time of year, but we will try again on February 8th, 2025.

Stay warm and safe and see you in February!

N/A  Pellets. How to find the right ones?

JSB makes this Exact sampler pack with 7 pellets known for accuracy. However cannot find it except in Europe.

Funny gun related stories

We had a guy at work Gerry, who was a total miser, lots of money. He collected EVERYTHING from tredle sewing machines to roof slate, to step ladders, you name it he collected it. We had another guy Steve, that was a real gun enthusiast, who only had a relatively small collection but they were really nice and he cared for them with great love.

One day Gerry, who never owned any guns to my knowledge, announced to us that he was going to collect handguns. He prceeded to go to every yard sale and gun show and buy all kinds of guns, usually cheap trash guns like RG, and Heritage, things like that. Before too long he informed us all, that he had amassed over 80 handguns.

One day Gerry comes in and says "hey Bob, I got a pistol at a yard sale, that you might like, but I can't remember the name of it. It's a .22 semi auto". So I proceeded to name all the brands I could think of and when I finally come up with High Standard, his eyes lit up, "that's it". Now which model, and while I'm naming them, he volunteers he paid $100 even for it and he thought he might have paid too much, ater all, "it's just a .22 semi auto pistol". I keep naming HS .22 pistols and he tells me, "it had a funny name", and I immediately said.... "you mean ISU", to which he responds, "yeah, yeah, that' it". Now Steve is boiling, because this dumbass has just bought one of the most collectable HS target pistols ever made at a yard sale for $100 and it's probably worth over a grand! The conversation keeps going and Steve and I let it slip that we'll be at the range on Saturday to shoot our 44 mags.

Saturday rolls around and me and Steve are enjoying a day at the range with his S&W M29 and my old model Ruger Super Blackhawk. We take a break in the action to stop and get a cold drink and just BS about guns, when we hear a car coming. Gerry pulls up, gets out of his car, pulls out a box approx 18" x 18" cube and walks to the other side of the shooting line away from us. As he approches we can see the box is full of guns, to the point of running over, no cases, no padding, just handguns thrown in a box. He walks over to one of the concrete benches and literally pours out the box of guns on the concrete. I KID YOU NOT! As he pours them out a oouple topple off the bench, but with Gerry's catlike reflexes, he traps them agains the cinder block base of the bench, YIKES! Me and Steve cringe, at which point, Gerry rummages through the pile of guns, and comes up with a stainless Dan Wesson 44. We're absolutely amazed at both the DW, the pile of guns and Gerry's seemingly cavalier attitude towards the care of those guns. He loads up the DW with six rounds, fires them off at 25 yards, scoops the guns off the concrete bench back into the box, and without a word, walks back to the car and drives away, leaving us completely dumbfounded.

Steve finally got his wits back and said, "cheap bastard, he probably didn't want to waste any more money shooting than that"! It was at this point, we were wondering what that HS ISU looked like now, as it was in the box when he bought it.

FX  Wildcat MK3 O-Ring Replacement Tutorial

The one I struggled with was the tiny one in the very bottom of the reg. There is a tiny hole you shove the oring through and the groove is under the tiny hole. The oring wants to shoot past it. Took me almost an hour to get it to seat properly. At that point I just sent it to cape fear as it was under warranty. That was fine as when he got to it it was leaking in cpl other spots. He ended up resealing most of the gun and its back route to me now. This gun makes 3 amp reg failures this summer and why I have dislike for them.
Oh boy am I familiar with that one. I fought my amp regs in my impact and did a full rebuild on his maverick just to make sure it was sealed. Looking at the bag of orings is anxiety inducing but it's easy if you take every portion step by step as a system. Look at the gun as a system of systems and then it gets less scary (for the lurkers).

Look at an impact kit and tell me it doesn't make you wince 😁

Hatsan  Newbee bought a Hatsan Blitz BP 0.30

Hi there forum members,
My first posting in this asylum
Recently bought a new Blitz BP and ordered a low budget Vitoptics 1-6x24 LOVP
Today i did a small paintjob on the plastics, now gunmetal-grey, later to change in bronze.
first cleaned and scraped al sharp edges of the plastic parts, plastic primer and motip grey spraycans used.
It appeared to me that the tapered screws Hatsan used in the shoulderpiece plasic, were crooked and worn by overtightening, so
i still have to change that. Anyway, put it together and looks fine to me.

We never got the bullpup in the USA. I'm sure the mechanics work the same though. Remove the access door with 5 screws and clean out the compartment of any debris, and lightly oil the full auto mechanism. Some motor oil works best. Never use motor oil on anything else on a pcp. I just recently replaced my full auto gear and bronze bushing. Here's a great video on that.

N/A  Reloading a springer help?

I tried to load a pellet before cocking today. It works great but old habits are hard to break. I kept slipping into my old cocking routine.

It's going to take some focused effort to change a routine that I've done about 500,000 times in the past 6 years.

After a shot I break the barrel open and cock it without thinking. By the time I realize I should have loaded it first it's too late.

I'm going to tie something around the barrel to remind me to load first. Maybe that will help. It's a routine that gets burned into your brain and it's hard to do it differently.

Loading before cocking is definitely a better way to do it. Sooner or later I'll train myself to do it like that. It might take shock therapy or hypnosis but it's going to happen.

N/A  Recommendations on short range PCPs

LOL.. I'll probably take a slap in the ear hole for this but here goes anyway..
I would go for the NOTOS for around $250 and put another $100 or so in mods and upgrades such as the after market aluminum side lever, the expanded plenum, Buck Rail fore grip, bipod, 3D baffle insert and scope of your choice. Then I would grab a few of the Big Air Precision 12 rnd mags and a butt load of the JTS 18.1 pellets. If you don't already have a compressor there is room in that budget for the GX-cs3 or cs4. If you do already have an air source I would sock the remainder away for my next adventure.

Contact areas in barrel?

What tune are you running with the 33 gr pellets. I'm having a hard time getting them faster than 870
My gun now falls into the "one-off" category - so not completely repeatable.

When it was stock, I was maxing out around 870 as well with 33-34 gr pellets and slugs were slower than pellets for the same weight. Increasing the shot pressure above 175 bar wasn't all that helpful (or consistent)

JSB Exact King Heavy MK2 at 33.95 gr was running 860-875 at 175 bar and 4+ turns on the hammer spring - shot very well -
H&N Slug HP II 34 was 835-840 with the same tune - also shot very well
Oddly the Zan slug 26.5 shot at 950 and was also tight with the same tune

All the energies were 54-56 FP

WIth a larger port in the barrel and power selector and a plenum added, the H&N Slug HP II 34 is running 920 FPS and 64 FP

I think that the rifle has an odd need for the hammer to hit relatively hard in order to get consistent speeds but in the sweet spot, I routinely have eight shots with a spread of 1 FPS - but does not necessarily result in tight groups -

I swapped the poppet for one made of PEEK plastic and it still wants a good hit - it just doesn't drift or leak as much. A slightly heavier hammer spring allows a bit more energy but wasn't a remarkable improvement.

At the higher power the Zan 26.5 is totally wild but 34-38 gr slugs shoot well -

My experience has been that the projectile really matters with this gun - H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme and Grizzly have very consistent weights in the tin (better than the Slug HP II's) but they shoot really wild -

Slug HP II and Heavy Slug from H&N shoot well. The ZAN Slug HP (best consistency in weights in the tin) shoot ok but not great. Still trying to make them work - slightly cheaper and very tight weight tolerance - no need to sort.

The JSB Exact King Heavy needs sorted by weight but is the best flying pellet I've shot in my gun - just starts to fade past 50M

I have not played with low power settings much - I'm shooting at 50 and 75M outdoors so have focused on the higher power side

I think that the side mounted plenum is probably the easiest add for a bit more power/speed and is also completely reversible but required modifying the classic synthetic stock for it to clear - The one I got on e-bay mounts where the regulated pressure gauge goes but wasn't tapped for the same size gauge - so I had to also purchase a gauge with a G1/8 thread - he now states that in the listing.

Still waiting for a tactical stock - none of my mods have improved the tightness of my groups - mostly just increased power -

I've read that the Avenge-X 25 cal can be pushed to over 100 FP but no information on how- 65-68 FP several people have shared their mods but all did mods - I've hit 70 FP with a 33 gr slug at 995 fps but its not super accurate. Got 24.4 gr pellets to 1033 FPS but wasn't tight groups either.

Huben  GK1 power test

This should help:

Haven’t seen this yet, I think this is the only thread on the GK1 that I haven’t read in the past couple weeks. Awesome!

Huge Discounts on Vector Scopes: Their Top of the Line (Continental, 34mm)

I am pretty sure they make some major brands under OEM. I was sent a lot of vector stuff direct from them, and i've yet to find a piece of junk. They're decent for cheap scopes, and with airguns, you dont need much in way of durability because there's no recoil.

My favourite scopes are my element scopes however, a lot pricier.

Newbie self introduction

Thanks for the info! So far, I've gotten everything from Pyramid Air. Super happy so far. I have tried H&N, Crossman, and RWS. Now I need to try JSBs. Question: if you could only keep one, would it be the R9 or HW50s? Just looked at Flying Dragon... oh geesh, I think I might be in trouble. lol
That's a tough one lol. HW50s in .177 cal. is lighter and easier to cock, shoots flatter within 25 yds. The R9 in 22cal is heavier and a little stiffer to cock, has a little more knock down smack, and is less hold sensitive due to it's weight. I'd have to pick the HW50s

Another newbie looking at .30 PCPs

Airforce guns are very well made and made here in the USA . They are cost effective if you are just getting into pcp shootings. But if you want to go all in on a gun that will shoot right out of the box and is very adjustable look into the FX Panthera or FX Dynamic in the 600/700 mm barrels. Way more money but there is no comparison in accuracy in my opinion. I have guns made by both and enjoy shooting them all .

FX gauges , original or alternatives?

While I can't state that they're justified, I can state that the Sekhmet electronic gauges are easy to use, and I have had zero issues with the 28mm diameter ones on both of my Impacts. I only use them on the final regulator, not the bottle or mid regulator though.
Charging is the only thing to remember to do, but each charge lasts a long time, like months. Easy charge with the USB cord, takes about 45 minutes from low to full charge.
No matter if I get another rifle, I will add a Sekhmet gauge to it, if that helps you.
I know that there are less expensive offerings out there but have no experience with any of those.

mike
OEM on mine are all Wika/FX. I don't know that anyone makes a better gauge than Wika.

Looking for Maglite flashlight parts...

I had a 4 D cell maglite with same issue but it had Duracell or Energizer batteries in it and apparently they had some contract that if used with those brand batteries they covered it. So they sent me a new light. Since all the advancements it just sits now ununsed these days. I should probably remove the batteries lol.
Theres still a small group of people who love and use the maglites. Has to be parts floating around, even if from Aliexpress. Find some flashlight forums, probably have better luck.
I have a 4D size and replaced the bulb with an led one . Super bright and uses little battery juice .
You might look in Garage sales i see then there for little money .
