White tail deer hunting adventure of the year just begun.

Last days I have been choosing which PCP will be taken on the 7th of December to the first deer hunting of the year.

I wanted to install a regulator on my Evanix Windy City .357 Cal, and therefore I ordered a bottle regulator for Brocock from Huma and to be sent at 170 bar.

After some work I have it dully installed and with no leaks.

The rifle is very accurate and gives near to 15 exact shots at 752 fps. That's about 100 fpe with JSB Hades. I would like to have 850 fps, but no way. Maybe the plenum is too small.

My other .357 PCP rifle is a Jager. This one is shooting the JSB Hades at 908 fps. Perfect. But only gives 3 reliable shots.

Another topic is that after a hunting session, the Evanix does not need to be fired. The Jager needs to be fired.

I am of the idea, up to now, that I will bring with me the Evanix.

In .30 Cal I made a super combination: Sidewinder + .357 suppressor, plus a prismatic sight. The Sidewinder is shooting the JSB Hades 44.5 are 1000 fps, that means 100 fpe. The sight makes it to be light weight and easy to aim quickly.

I am also thinking about to take with me the Vulcan 3 700 mm .25 Cal. That one is giving 77 fpe with NSA 33.9 slugs.

Many thinking, many shots and many practice in order to feel comfortable.

And then:

Yesterday I went with my son to the shooting range in order to confirm that my 30-06 and his .243 are dully zeroed at 220 yards.

The power of the firearms is other science. With just 6 shots and shooting up to 350 yards, we are super confident that the rifles are just as we want them to be.

Snowpeak  P35X Review

I don't recognize what StyleFree uses but EdinGA came up with an idea for a bipod mount I used before I made my custom stocks. He used a 34mm scope accessory ring to add a picatinny. I had to sand a groove in the ring so it would fit into the limited space between the air tube and the shroud but that only took a few minutes. I also had to add a few layers of tape to the inside of the ring so it fit the air tube. The resulting picatinny rail is nice and solid. The groove for clearance doesn't really show. You have to be careful to get it oriented right to avoid introducing cant.

That's a great option to consider. Thanks. My first choice would be to purchase a cylinder mount already made if possible. Failing that, I appreciate your excellent ideas.

Any experiences with Hawke 2-7x32 ao IR?

@Elgreco I am considering this scope for my Taipan .25 compact for squirrel/rabbit/(maybe one day iguana?) hunting. From your pictures, it looks like the reticle isn't extremely fine, which is what I am looking for: want a reticle I can pick out easily, since it won't be used at particularly long ranges.

Is that your experience, is the reticle pretty easy to pick out, not super fine?

Thank you,
-pg
It’s not super fine for me; Bushnell’s MOA Deploy reticle is finer.

Got the old model 4-12 and the 2-7 IR glass-etched Hawkes.

Moreover, it’s a mildot, so those dots should give you bigger and more visible reference points unlike the AMX.

Dealer return policy

There seems to be a general misunderstanding about the meaning of my original post, probably poorly stated by me. I was not, nor would I ever say that a "buy-it-and-try-it" policy should be the norm, nor that dealers should "acquiesce to customer whims". My point is that a totally closed policy can be damaging to both the dealer's business and the customer's satisfaction. I would never expect a dealer to accept a return based only on "buyer's remorse". There is a small but important component of sales that sometimes results in the product being unsuitable for the customer, but is not due to a warranty issue. IMO, a dealer should be willing to discuss such a sale and make a reasonable decision, which will sometimes result in accepting a return. In such cases, the customer should have no issue with paying a reasonable restocking fee. Having over 40 years' experience in banking and business, I understand the challenges of running a small business, and how trying to compete with the high volume/low margin competition can be the kiss of death. You don't need to open the door to unreasonable customer demands and make poor management decisions, but you need to be willing to discuss the reasonable requests that might be a little outside the box. My experience has been that most dealers (in any business) are willing to do this regardless of fine print to the contrary.

DIFTA Match Report Saturday, November 2, 2024

Nine shooters turned out for our November match. The weather forecast for sunny skies and starting temps in the low 40s rising to low 60s was accurate. The wind was variable with perfect calm until Mark King arrived and then started gusting to > 7 mph. A coincidence perhaps? Needless to say, hold off was required for most targets; WFTF suffered the most; and the scores reflect the windy conditions.

The course was 10 lanes, with one kneeling and one offhand lane, with three targets per lane shot twice. The Troyer value for the course was 29.76 with seven targets > 40T (Expert); ten targets set out at >= 40 yards; and seven targets with 0.375”or 0.5” kill zones.

The match high score of 45/60 was taken by Greg White in Hunter Division very closely followed by Roel Jackson. Mark King in WFTF with 42/60 put in a very credible performance under the conditions. Antoni Kleczek took the top score of 41/60 in Open Division, followed closely by a tie between Tinh Nguyen and Mark Mayer.

As always, many thanks to those who travel long distances to compete and keep our sport alive, and to everyone who pulled strings and targets after the match.

Paolo Amadeo setup the course; Mark Mayer blew oceans of leaves and acted as match Director.

See you in 2025!

Airforce  AirForce Texan owners..advice needed

I use a 34inch TX2 Valve .510 Texan with 450 grain cast slugs at around 800 fps..It doesnt matter if you hollow points or solids expect zero blood even if it falls at the shot..I love airguns but subsonic deer hunting is consistently unreliable.. My advise if you are going to use airguns for deer get max amount of power possible..I,ve lost enough with 800 foot pounds...510...My truthful expierience wish i was lying...Pros my Texan cast slugs cost nothing free..It is quiet with donny fl and extension..My .510 with some work done will shoot one hole at 50 yards..3moa on average 125yard groups..

Tuning  What is the reason for LW .215x .221 .?

Is it a time tested Bore/groove combo for pellets or a compromise to make everybody happy or try too. While watching football I decided to to measure some pellets.. The JSB 18.13 ran .21795 mostly & the skirts at the smallest .225, very hard to measure the dang skirt..So my question is why more are not running RF barrels.? Not enough bite between .217 bore & .218 pellet ? the skirt certainly seems ok for .217 .222 RF barrel. There is also .22 RF tite spec stuff, more like .215 x .220. But I can't seem why a normal RF .217x .22 wouldn't work. I get the whole slug spec thing but for pellets I think I need it spelled out for me as to the why of it ..lol I'm missing something I think. The twist rates are close enough. 16 common & many more available.

Need Help Reximex RPA

Ya, kinda the same ol story on these guns today is that a way to aim them is low to no important .. go figure a way to aim there guns are -0- thought .

What idiot makes a sight for a gun that can't adjust in your case no elevation ,right .. I seen this on others with this gun .

Goes to show the folks who designed/ qc'ed or any involvement in it must never handled a gun . Of course these guns sold with no sight at all is something and guys pay 1000's + for that ..lol

N/A  Shooting indoors

I use a Super Target Systems 12" bullet trap with minimal lead dust & impact noise, for all pellets and .22 caliber rimfire. Made of very thick and heavy steel. It's a little pricey but so very quiet. I stuff a pair of old jeans behind the 1/2" thick rubber front insert, which is replaceable. The only noticeable noise is the impact on the paper target. You get some paper debris out front, but not much.

FX  New panthera gun HELP!!!

Not meant wrong in any way, have one myself, but If you have a Panthera or pretty much anything recently made by FX you will do yourself a favor by learning how to service them yourself, otherwise there's a half decent chance you end up having the gun sent out more than you actually get out and shoot it...

You're looking at replacing o ring(s) number 7 as seen on on page 5, which go on part 8 found on that same page;

You'll find out how to degass these on youtube.
Great advice for sure. Hopefully your hand eye skill is better than mine. I found the amp reg an utter nightmare to work on. They will all fail at some point so that skill is a good one to develop. Still trying to decide myself to hang in there or completely break away from the platform. My last FX has 2 amp regs and the future gives me nightmares thinking about 2 to deal with. Lol

GMI Press and Dies

This is what i did at work yesterday in about 45 min-1 hour. Once you get in a rhythm it just flows pretty good. I have the 44,50 and 56g inserts and flat, cup and dish base punches with 3 different depth hp pins in 2 different diameters. This is a 44g .30 hp db (hollow point dish base) slug that i shoot out of my FX impact between 890-900 fps that are deadly accurate out to 100yds, I haven't tested them any further. Just to touch on the consistency of this kit, EVERY single slug dropped at 44g!! I have also found that you can shim the hp pin to manipulate the weight a few grains. At the moment i am having to cast a NOE 257-64-FN-BP5 and use it as my core. I am looking for a blank 5 cavity Lee mold to make a core mold. I currently have about 1200# of pure lead so buying lead wire doesn't make sense , although i would like to figure out a way of making a set of dies to use a log slitter to make lead wire.

Stormrider vs Squirrel

Nice kills. The second one reminds me of one I hit with my P35-177 about in the throat. It bled profusely and initially fell from the tree but then climbed back up about 10 feet and sat there looking at me and my dog. Then it fell and my dog shook him a few times to finish him off. Neck shots have consistently worked well for me even if my placement is not perfect. But the larger calibers do provide a little more margin for less than ideal placement in my experience.

I killed one with a pump up 177 that had about 5 fpe but I won't use it again on a squirrel. I hit the shoulder and the pellet broke it but did not get to the vitals. So the squirrel died but it took over a day. It could not climb and couldn't run very well. I don't think guns at that low a power level should in general be used. I did not even like the results with my original Prod tune of about 13 fpe but it did work as long as my placement was good. It it tuned to about the same fpe as my P35-177 (18-19) and has similar results. Any reasonable hit kills them quickly. I like my 30-50 fpe airguns too and I think they kill a little quicker and give a little more placement margin but for backyard shooting I like my under 20 fpe airguns. They are quiet with adequate power and their pellet doesn't carry as far if I miss (but I am still careful what is behind where my gun is pointed).

Huben  Got some new stuff for my GK1

Come back and tell the folks here after you have gone through a few low dollar compressors. You get what you pay for.

I wouldnt call a GX CS4 a "low dollar compressor". Maybe middle ground?

Anyway, I've always refilled my bottles at the local fire station, all of them have high quality HPA compressores. My guess is that most people have on fire station not that far away. In here they want to fill it for free, but I always leave a nice donation for them. I just bought the compressor for convenience.

But you do you, it all depends on the amount of air that you need.

Formula for Ballistic Coefficient Finally Solved and Understood

There is no formula.

The only means to accurately calculate BC from 2 velocities at a given distance, or 1 velocity with a known drop at a certain distance, or with 1 velocity and a known time of flight at a particular distance, is with a ballistic solver that brute forces the value by iterating through every possible ballistic co-efficient until the stars align (or rather its outputs match your inputs) and, walla, your 'ballistic co-efficient' is produced.

The above method has been fully tested, tried and trued to match MERO / Chairgun Pro.

So from now on, when someone asks, whats the formula to get BC from 2 velocities at a given distance ect, you say...a ballistic solver formulates that for you.

The why:

You cannot formulate or 'solve' Ballistic Coefficient without drag tables (which are velocity dependent) and knowing the flight characteristics of that particular projectile, which you feed into the solver by providing it two velocities at a given distance apart, or 1 velocity and a drop distance from POI and a given distance, or 1 velocity and a time of flight at a given distance.
