Rifle and pistol "mix and match" match

Kudos to Martin for recognizing the red-headed step-child of Field Target. (y) Thank you.

A few anecdotes, just FWIW.

Although Pistol FT growth has been slow, sometimes painfully so, since inception (around Y2K) it has been relatively steady. Some larger events now have over half the shooters also entering the pistol event. At the 2024 TEXtreme Field Target State Championships (the first weekend of December) we actually had as many Extreme Pistol shooters as Rifle shooters (14 in each competition). 😁

As if rifle FT isn't challenging enough, and FT match directors don't already have enough on their plates, Pistol FT is even more challenging for shooters and match directors alike; be that accommodating pistol shooters in the same event and course as rifle shooters, or stand-alone pistol matches.

With many of the best Pistol Field Target shooters attending my high-Troyer pistol matches, in our 20 foot-pound (maximum) pistol matches I've been allowing folks to shoot any airgun within that power limit, be it pistol or rifle. That lets non-pistol shooters and/or rifle shooters seeking more trigger-time in match conditions, more shooting opportunities in relatively low rifle-Troyer matches. Think sproinger, Co2, and/or multi-pump rifle FUN; hence the 'Fun Rifle' class name. Interestingly, none of the Fun Rifle shooters have cleaned a pistol course yet despite the rifle Troyer being in the high 20s (mid-40s pistol).

In the quarter-century since Pistol Field Target inception there have been quite impressive improvements in not only shooter skills, but equipment evolution(s). Consequently, Pistol rules have been something of a moving target.

We originally had a maximum target distance of 25 yards, minimum KZ diameter of 3/4", and course Troyer difficulties in the high 20s to mid 30s. But as shooters converted their (temperature-hypersensitive) Co2 pistols to high-pressure air, embraced more sophisticated RIFLE scopes, and bipods were allowed, the maximum target distance went to 30, then 35 yards (for AAFTA Pistol), the minimum KZ shrank to 1/2", and Pistol course Troyers climbed into the 40s. Top pistol shooters now routinely score as well as the average rifle shooters in RIFLE matches.

Somewhere along the Pistol Field Target history time-line some lunatic decided if 12 foot-pound (maximum) pistols and 35 yard maximum distances are fun, then 20 foot-pound pistols and 55 yard distances might be FUNNER. He not only ripped-off the AAFTA rifle power-limit of 20 foot-pounds, Hunter rifle scope magnification limit of 16X, and maximum AAFTA rifle target distance of 55 yards, but also ripped-off the term 'Extreme' from somewhere to name the (then) new Pistol FT competition. The maniac was right; and now runs the asylum. 🤪

How right, you ask?

Ask Brocock, RAW, HW, and countless pistol FT shooters why they build and SELL 20 foot-pound pellet pistols capable of 1/2" groups at 55 yards.

Off Brand Optics (knockoffs)

Has anyone had any experience purchasing Temu and Amazon optics? I need a night-vision or thermal setup for coyote hunts here in NM. Would rather test the water without draining my bank account.
Update: Did receive a Temu NV Optic. The scope actually worked well. There was no magnification though and was incredibly hard to Zero. However! The Temu company gave me a 50% refund and I got to keep the scope. So all in all I got out cheap and still have toy to put on a toy someday.

The cool thing is I found a Triton 3x18 Starstrike refurbished the very next day on E-bay for $134.00.

Targets: HOME MADE.

My biggest problem is the noise of pellet trap. I am shooting in my backyard and trying to decrease noise not to disturb neighbors much. I made target base from set of white soft 2x4 assembled in compact board and covered with 6 layers of old synthetic rug lightly glued together and covered with thick layer of polypropylene foam (for paper target fixation). This appears to be fairly effective trap with relatively low crack sound volume at pellet impact.

Air Venturi  AV Avenger “under charging”

Received my o-ring kit from Captain o-ring, and replaced the rings I had found were leaking with the soapy water snoop test. The bad o-rings were three of the four 13-3 rings and both of the 12-2.5 rings in the two air chambers. Charged it right up to 300 bar with no problem and no further leaks seen at those places with a follow-up snoop test.

The old rings were stiff and hard to remove from their grooves, even with a hooked pick tool that I use for brake seals. I found it was much easier getting them off once I warmed them up well with a heat gun (industrial hair dryer). Installed each ring with a couple of drops of RWS silicone air gun oil. I did not bother with any locktite that some folks call out. Once the chamber is at pressure, there is no way those fittings are budging, nevermind coming unscrewed.

Below is a phone picture of the old hardened o-rings (top 2) vs. the new ones. 12mm on the left and 13mm on the right. If you look closely you can see that the tops of the two old ones are flat on top. They also did not stretch as easily until warmed up.

Umarex  Umarex Gauntlet 0.30 caliber w/ 44.75g JSB!

Aldo,
JSB pellets in 18.13 grain (.22), 33.95 grain (.25) and 44.75 grain (.30) are world famous for accuracy, other JSB offerings, not so much. Everything clicked for JSB with these designs, so not surprising to hear positives about them. JSB 50.15s come thru for some but not close to 44.75s, sales reflect same. WM

FX  New to fx m4 .25 sniper, i love it but...

I have followed and so far really good results, jts and AEA pellets are incredibly accurate and I have become a sniper killing pigeons at 100 yards with pellets ,I love the m4 and I have no regret looking back and wondering if rti mora would of been better option and i can't see how it could beat the fx impact i doubt it anyway but what dovi know about pcp's? Very little, but if someone assure hands down that the mora is more accurate and more shots per fill i will buy one no questions ask.....

Yeah I shoot AEA out of everything by now (in terms of pellets). Hands down better than anything else.

Don’t worry about the mora if you’re happy with the impact, it’s a different animal. Also there are reports on growing pains with the mora (clipping, block eating trigger, other issues) so I’d wait on it anyways. Plus it’s a big heavy beast, not something you want to drag around. The barrels are great though, I have an RPB on a prophet and it’s very very accurate. But so is my impact :) and not saying the impact doesn’t have its own assortment of issues, but a dialed in impact with a good liner is as good as it gets to 100 imho.

Beeman  Record setting R1??

So...they were sold as functional, but you caught 4 out of 5 losers.

I wouldn't say the guns I won at auction were "losers." They simply didn't work. Externally they were in good to great shape, plus they're rare, hard-to-find items that I was fortunate enough to obtain at a fairly good price.

Not sure why you're going out of your way to make it seem like buying Doc Beemans collection pieces was a bad move. Do you have a grudge against him??

 I think you're reading waaaay too much into what I wrote. Regardless, I apologize if contradicting you caused any offense.
