What happened? SlowMo Rock Squirrel may have gotten lucky

Rock Squirrel 40 yards
Notos (stock) 15.89grain @ 756 fps / 20 ft lbs

Not sure what happened exactly, wish I had zoomed in more so I could have seen better what happened but I think the
pellet may have glanced off his head because at impact he shut down immediately, but then got up and scrambled back up to his den pretty quickly.

I climbed up to retrieve him but couldn't see him in his den, but there was small blood trail.

I hate when I can't retrieve something I shot but happens I guess. From now on I'm gonna save the Notos for backyard plinking and use the 30 cal Vulcan 3 when I'm out, these rock squirrels are tough and if they don't drop dead immediately they go back in their holes.

I know at 50 yards my stock Notos with 15.89 grains is only carrying about 11 or 12 ft lbs. so kinda weak for more than back yard plinking and varmints under 20 yards.

So what do you think? Did he survive with a serious headache or did he crawl home and die.

Died, and probably rather quickly once he got to a hole. You stiff legged him and he rolled over, that usually means you got him good and he's likely running on borrowed time.

My buddy and I hit them with 40-70 fpe and they'll get to a hole with 20 % of their meat missing and be dead 1 inch below surface level and usually eaten by their comrades or dragged down the hole.

Rex and the gang held another match on Tom's Gila river-bottom property this past weekend.

These events aren't just a field target match, but rather a 12fpe and under pistol silhouette match, and a 20fpe and under rifle silhouette match, and camping, and hanging out, AND a first class field target match.

Thepistol silhouette match uses AAFTA-legal field target pistols and positions, with teeny tiny little silhouettes at 15, 20, 25, and 30 yards, for a total possible score of 40 points. This event was on Friday afternoon, and 8 shooters chose to participate in this one.

Here are the top three pistol silhouette scorers....

Steve H 29/40
Andrew W 24/40
Larry F 21/40

The rifle silhouette match uses AAFTA-legal rifles and positions, with 1/5 scale silhouettes at 50, 60, 70, and 80 yards. Again, total possible score of 40 points. This event happened just after dark on Friday evening, and 11 shooters were part of this event. I received reports that the wind was quite challenging during this match, all directions and very sporadic. They hung ribbons at each target distance and sometimes the ribbon at two or three distances would be straight out and one or two would be hanging straight down. Makes a guy scratch their head for sure.

Here are the top 4 rifle rifle silhouette scorers....

The main event is the 60 shot field target match on Saturday morning. For conditions during this match I received the following report: "The wind was brisk with periods of gusts and lulls, Some extreme up and down shots. Quite a few in full shadow." There were also some spring time gobblers shaking the place up with their looking-for-love calls, and even walking through camp. I was sent the kill zone sizes and distances and arrived at an overall Troyer factor of 35.8, without accounting for the targets in the deep shadows of the river bottom, nor for the steep up and down angles, nor for the wind. I imagine if this was a formal GP, we'd be looking at a much higher Troyer after applying those difficulty factors. Typical for a Southwest Airgunners ft match, NOT easy. For perspective, the lowest T of all 30 targets was a 29.3, and it was a 3/8" kz at 11 yards. The highest Troyer was a 41, a 1" kz at 41 yards. For those unfamiliar with the Troyer factor, it's as simple as the distance divided by the kill zone size, with some additional difficulty factors applied. This course, being a 60 shot match with an average T of a 35.8....would be comparable to trying to shoot 60 times at a 1" kill zone at 36 yards, without missing. Or a 1/2" kill zone at 18 yards, again for 60 shots without missing. Or, for a third comparison, 60 shots at a 1 and 5/8" kz at 52 yards. And these are organic conditions, wind blowing, sitting on a stool, etc. Nobody is parked at a concrete bench with a 20+ pound rig supported by the table in these matches, no siree.

So, 14 shooters in the ft match.
Here are the top 5 scores...
IMG_20250506_142540.jpg

And how those 14 shooters fared... (all but John were in the Hunter class)
Rex J 59/60
Gary W 57/60
Kent G 53/60
Andrew W 52/60
Crystal G 48/60
Steve Q 48/60
Franz D 44/60
Larry F 44/60
John W 43/60 (Open)
Shane T 41/60
Andrew S 40/60
Sam W 37/60
Tom H 35/60
Chance H 16/60

There were 3 scorecards with "new" noted on them. I think that was Rex's method of designating those shooters as first-timers. And if that's the case, some recognition needs to go towards Gary W, because his said "new" and he shot a very impressive 57/60. Even more so for being his first time shooting an FT match. Also want to point out Andrew....he tracked down an HW in .20 somewhere and he's climbing the scorecard higher and higher each match. He's gonna be at the top giving the leaders some serious competition here real soon. And with my favorite caliber too. And of course way to go Rex, you won all three events!!! Impressive shooting right there.

Much thanks to Rex and Steve and Larry and whoever else showed up early to get the course set up. And we can't express enough gratitude to property owner Tom H for hosting us. Amazing field target venue, lots of shade from which to shoot, and fun place to camp and hang out for a match. On top of welcoming us onto his property, Tom even feeds us breakfast! Thank you Tom!!!

My UPS SHIPPING TIPS

If you do not want to use two shipping labels on the package I suggest you place one inside the box in the event the other label is damaged or is removed.
I have worked with UPS for 36yrs ... this is the best way ...longer boxes moving through the conveyor system have a greater chance to rub along other boxes and the conveyor dividers. Use some clear packaging tape over the lable. I have found that the pouches can get rubbed off while moving through the system. If there is a chance for friction to remove it ..it eventually will. Keep it as flat as possible

Also, to save the most you can, try to make the length as short as possible .. i.e. remove the action from the stock
the longer the box, the more you will be charged as a person who dooesn't have a shipping account with the company.

Getting to know the driver in your area has it's benefits. Drivers always remember those who have been kind/mean to them. We are much more likely to go the extra distance for those kind customers when things happen...i.e. needing an early delivery, or help with a claim

Optic Damage for Springers?

I often wonder if many new scopes with etched glass reticles and better materials and construction could hold up to springer abuse.

I recently reached out to March and Zeiss asking about spring piston air rifle use. March said they test and warrant their Compact (the model I specifically asked about) for spring piston use. Zeiss said their Conquest V4 (again model line specific question on my part) are piston air rifle rated.

That to say we may be living in a time where a lot more scopes are rated/capable than people realize, and it may be worth reaching out to manufacturers to learn more about any scope you’re considering putting on a springer. Now for the disclaimer: So far I have not evaluated either claim. I think I will soon start by throwing my Zeiss directly into the fire on an RWS 54, however. 😬
Since you mention D54 I have a Sightron Stac 4-20×50 on mine in .22. Approacing 2000 shots with no problrms. It is mounted in Burris Signature Rings with inserts. I shoot it to and including 100 yards. Have fun.

My RAW HM1000X .25 took gold in Oregon this weekend!

I have a Polygon Twist barrel in my RAW. It was made before the slug thing became an interest. I have tried to shoot the same weight slug as the AEA Center Punch @33.9 that prints good paper, but the slug won't group very well?? Do you have an auxiliary plenum mounted? Thanks, Bill
Yes there is a plenum on Cam's gun. I suggest you try some different brand slugs and shoot at many different velocities to find the sweet spot. I find they are more finicky than pellets when searching for ultimate precision.

Red Gem!

And it’s here!
Going outside now.
Heavy for its size. Seems very well made.

A few BB shots, I can hit a pop can @ 10 feet pretty easily.

With Crosman BB it’s putting out 196 fps consistently.
They have an oring that goes in the cap under the co2 cartridge. It’s supposed to help keep the cart straight. But when you screw the cap tight, the oring gets twisted and out of place. Has not caused a problem at this point.

I will give the airsoft barrel a try tomorrow, and the work up a good shotgun load for it.

I am pleased with this purchase.

Best of Non-Lead Pellets?

I'm limited to shooting non lead to prevent farmyard poultry from picking up lead pellets and poisoning themselves, and laying eggs. So far, non lead pellets are doing good enough for starlings out to 40 yards. I'm surprised there's not more lead free options considering how many of us are shooting around farms.
I'm finding that the larger caliber lead free pellets can be accurate further. Maybe that is the same with lead projectiles, as I understand the extreme benchrest competitors are shooting .30s, not .25s or .22s.
But then the larger calibers are even more expensive :-(

As for lead pellets around farms, yeah I see that a lot on those youtube videos that I probably shouldn't be watching. Yes, pellets are small but by the end there are a lot of rats and pigeons lying around with pellets in their vitals. Where do they all go?

Other  Recommendations for 10yo?

The other consideration with children is whether they are physically capable of cocking the gun. I know a lot of people will start kids off with a Red Ryder or something similar and find that the kids just lack the strength to cock it. I strongly suspect that's why the 499B target rifle only shoots at around 220 fps. They say it's because of accuracy, but I think it's just because a lot of kids can't cock a standard one.
Daisy helped that tremendously by adding step clicks. A little one can get a few clicks at a time until they finish.

Benjamin  Marauder tank modification

Kind of like the arms race. M-Rod folks just have a M-Rod or a few. Not like we bought a FX1, then a FX2, then a FX3 then a FX4 and then a FX5 and then a upcoming FX6 where the number of FX guns to be owned is equal to N+1. Of course it has been pointed out that modding the old M-Rod is a waste of time and money but a much lesser waste of time and money compared to N+1 FX air guns, modding them with very high $ parts and then trying to flip them at a huge loss to get that new N+1 model that must surely be better than the old one from a few weeks ago. I mean, like, who would want last week's old busted down and not new and shiny anymore when they can waste some more time and money with a cool new FX with a fake magazine sticking out the bottom for some awful reason and a tactical stock to play operator in the back yard.
Absolutely correct.

Benjamin  Marauder question scope

I guess I'm different. Airforce is the first pcp I ever saw(and why I got into them) , and still to this day likely the last I would buy at half price. It's super subjective and a personal preference thing for sure. I choose projects because they're hard and out of my comfort zone. 7,000 orings? Sounds good to me.

The mrod biggest problem for my first gen was the poor deburring on the air tube. Got a roto burr tool and it's been a breeze to change out guage block orings ever since. Judging by the posts I see on agn lately, I know I'm an outlier but want to help people jump in the deep end too.

From a gen 1 Mrod 25 to an impact and it wasn't a big deal for me. If you break down a machine into a system of systems, it's not so overwhelming....unless it's an aea which requires you to find the design flaw that was never thought out I initially (i have a long standing bone to pick with them😁).
So, you started with the simplest platform, learned about pcp rifles and then expanded from there.

BR Questions

Thanks for the replies. I have been shooting PB for 70 years and understand the basics. I was looking for suggestions for a rifle. Doesn't need to be a repeater, single shot is fine. But need an adjustable trigger, a replaceable barrel and a way to adjust the power unless speed effects more than trajectory. I have a M-rod F&T and a Notos and want to stay 22 cal.
It would helpful to know your budget range Bill? If you want the absolute most accurate, bar none then look no further than a Thomas rifle. However, there are other options that will allow you to have fun and compete with at a lower entry cost. starting with an Avenger and going up $$ from there.

N/A  Reximex Apex

Hi all,

I'm Craig, I've just joined as I've bought my first PCP rifle a Reximex Apex in .22 caliber. I've not been doing any kind of shooting for almost 20 years but last year I went clay pigeon shooting and almost nailed every shot so was keen to get back into something. So I bought this one last month.

I've been practicing with it at 46yards distances as thats all I have in my yard and thanks to this forum and others have managed to sort a couple of small issues with the gun and found that as some people have said it likes heavier pellets. I'm using both Barracuda Power 21.14 gr and Ultra Shock 25.39 gr. My grouping is around 1/2" over this distance so I'm very happy.

I'm looking for a longer range near me in the UAE and looking for any advice on pellets or tuning to be able to use this up to 100 yards.

Thanks,
Craig.
