30-Yard Challenge

Date: 8/4/25
Target: 30-Challenge 200 16X
Rifle: Taipan Veteran 2 Standard (550mm)
Pellet: AEA 18.3g @ 919-926fps (FX Chrono)
Scope: Athlon Argos Gen2 SFP 10-40 @ 35X

The Taipan Vet 2 has been so accurate (and quieter) since I dropped reg pressure from 150bar to 128bar. This 200 tops the 199 that I had on the leaderboard.

It was the only card I shot with the Taipan yesterday. I was sad - needed a boost. Somebody hit my car while parked at a store lot yesterday - and took off. Quite a bit of damage - I love this Mazda3 and she is in great shape, I keep her very clean. Some people are just jerks - will cost me at least $500 (insurance deductible) if I decide to file a claim. Probably well over $1,000 if I decide to pay out of pocket.

I also did some pellet testing with Greg's @NAProf .177 380mm FX Crown barrel. I found a tin of JSB 8.44 - so I gave them a try at 30-Masters - 1st card was a "baseline" using the AEA 8.72s I've had much success with in this barrel. The stunning thing was that the JSBs had a higher velocity than the AEAs - even though the JSBs were HEAVIER. I did a lot of chronoing - the AEAs are longer than the JSBs, might have something to do with the increased drag/friction. In any case, the 8.44s did really well - Greg take note...

195 10X (AEA 8.72 @ 915-922fps)
198 11X (JSB 8.44 @ 940-945fps)
197 10X (JSB 8.44 @ 942fps)
196 11X (JSB 8.44 @ 922-932) dialed down the power wheel a click or two

The 198 tied my 30-Masters high with the .177 Crown this year.

Hornets nest

All jokes aside... I'm leaning towards the shotgun. At least they will be homeless and hopefully they will move on. Pretty sure a center mass blast will eradicate a bunch of them. I love free targets.

"What paper target did you shoot today?"

Sorry, couldn't help it :ROFLMAO:

Good luck to our man in the bee suit! 🫡

Sheridan Sights

Good question, J. The '64 won't be a problem as it uses itty-bitty screws to secure the rear sight.

The wedge-type sight mounting method on the later models caused stress on the soldered joint between the barrel and pump-tube. That stress can crack the joint and separate the barrel from the tube. The scope-mount that Sheridan marketed in the seventies added even more stress and caused more separations. Many of us have removed the rear sight and added a receiver-mounted peep sight to prevent the problem.

Cheers,

J~

Shooting Airguns at night

I shoot at night with Night vision scope,
If you have Rats, it's the best way to shoot them, a little Peanut butter buffet with a backstop..... lights out. ;)o_O
So true, it's amazing how they just walk past the dead ones to get to the peanut butter. Makes me feel sorry for them, so I let them fill their bellies a little then shoot them. Is it wrong to enjoy get rid of the pest, shoot first and pray later just incase.

.22 FX Hybrid Slugs

Shooting a Stoeger XM1 Ranger and picked up two boxes (sleeves?) of .22 caliber 22 grain fx hybrids. Excited to try them this evening but all I have is a 10 meter range at the minute. They stacked 5 slugs into one hole. Hopefully this is a good omen for longer ranges. (more recently I shout them at 40 meters and they clover leafed)

Now, I know slugs need to be pushed fast and I haven’t had a chance to chrony them yet but I’m currently shooting 16 grain FX diabolos at 874fps. 22 grain slugs probably around low 800s…maybe?

Problem is, I shot 3 of them into modelling clay and none of them expanded.

I would have thought ~800fps would be enough to cause expansion.

Any tips or ideas very much appreciated!

Been seeing more great 100 yard groups

I am not a pcp guy but a springer benchrest guy. But I am also a long time powder burner centerfire bench shooter at the Nat'l level. I think it important to keep the context straight. If we are talking 100 yds here a pellet will not compete as a rule with a slug or a .22 rf . Now a high end PCP slug gun will compete with a .22 rim fire, see post #10, and at times be even better. If you want all your groups to look like 1 ragged/ or not hole, you need to step into a powder burner like a 6 PPC. Regardless, for top end success at 100 yds it will not be consistently feesable without windflags unless you have access to a 100yd tunnel. Springer, PCP, .22 rimfire, centerfire powder burner........All different with different capabilities. If you think windfalls are a joke then there is a joke somewhere but it's not the windfalls. I saw the comment about I can't read or remember all the flags. Very simple, 2 or even one flag gives you a huge advantage over no flags. Never forget the big danger....You don't know what you don't know. But even worse......Your unwilling to learn.

Hello shooters

What's up everyone! I just joined. I'm sure my story is similar to others. I bought a Gamo Shadow Whisper .177 at Wal-Mart 5 years ago. I handed down my 2 Daisy pump bb guns to my twins. It was time to shoot! Well the sights were garbage and I couldn't hit anything. I put the gamo away and forgot about it.
I am a firefighter, and moved to a new station that someone had a similar break barrel and metal targets. I shot it pretty well. So, I dusted off the gamo. I decided to upgrade the sights. I went with a 11 dovetail to 20 picatinny adapter and a pinty red dot. Cheapest I could find on Amazon. 🤣
Set up the red dot and sighted it in at 25m. Took it to work and did good with it. Everyone took turns. Another FF asked how much the red dot and rail were. He was surprised that it was under 30$. He said send him the link and that he was bringing his springer next shift. He has been trying to remove pests from his yard without any luck.
The pellet game has been interesting. Right now I'm on the Stoeg waddcutters 7.48 and they are performing well. I am ready to move up to a 10+gr and get ready for small game.
I've been looking up info in here for a couple of days. I've already learned so much. Artillery method! Thank you very much! I haven't even tried it yet but it makes so much sense. Triggers. Probably not going to do anything else to the gamo. Should be good for a couple of seasons and plenty of plinking. I will be saving up for a .22 airgun. I'm not sure what style or brand but, well under 1k. I think i might start hitting pawn shops and see what's out there.
That's my story. I look forward to hearing from y'all!

@Snead360 - Welcome to Airgun Nation. Having access to SCBA equipment might make you lean towards a PCP. Beware, the PCP rabbit hole is deep and can get expensive really quickly. Watch a bunch of videos on youtube and budget accordingly.

Take a look at the Benjamin Marauder .22 for your first PCP rifle. Probably the best budget PCP out there. Been around for ever and American made. Well built and powerful. There are tons of youtube videos on the rifle and pistol versions.

Springers are much easier on the budget. Plus there are trigger upgrades available to improve your accuracy.

Pellet wise I suggest purchasing quality pellets. They really help with accuracy. JSB 8.44 and 10.3's are great pellets and will usually work in most air rifles. Twenty-two caliber best pellets are still the JSB 16 and 18's are bench mark and worth the cost.

I suggest reading the forum rules and guidelines. Once a user is "established" and has made at least 10 quality posts they are granted access to the Member Classifieds. There are usually some really good deals there.

Have fun and enjoy the forums. They are a great place to hang out and scammers are quickly weeded out by the admins. Some of these guys have forgotten more about pellet rifles than I will ever know.

Karma  Just Got A Karma Red Panda

Karma Red Panda 2025 spec .30 cal pellet version. First five shots out of the box at 50 yards after zeroing the scope with AEA 45 grain pellets. About .382 MOA I believe. Pleased so far. Trigger needs a little work. Second stage breaks okay but first stage is a little mushy.

Wow I don't own anything except a .22 cal as I only shoot paper. If I ever do get a BB I would seriously consider this RED .30 cal Just an amazing first 5. OldVet.

What Paper Target Did You Shoot Today

Crown MK2 shooting JSB Kings 25.39 in green, Zelos shooting FX 25.39, Wildcat MK1 shooting JTS 25.39. All 25 cal.

The Zelos is by far the least consistently accurate PCP I have. Ironically it’s the most consistent ES/SD PCP I have.

View attachment 581774
Just curious for the Zelos was that FX the most accurate of the 3 of the 25.39. I'm shooting the 28g HP dish base slugs from my .22 cal Zelos , and very accurate as well. I wonder if the .25 would be more accurate with a heavier pellet , or slug. I only shoot paper ,but the APOLO slugs were cheaper , so I tried them. I went to Ace Hardware, and bought a bit of plastic tubing covered the barrel under the shroud even the exposed part back by my face , and it is so quiet , and more accurate now. It turned out to be a simple mod real easy to do , and man it was a great idea. OV. Edit: Love the target going to use this , and nice shooting by the way.

Hornets nest

I have an arrangement of rain gear I was going to use as an outer layer . Then I was thinking I had a full painter suit but can’t find it. So I decided to get the bees suit from Amazon. Xxl is 22 bucks. Cheaper than the painters suit. I am afraid this might not be the last time I do this. . My concern is gaps. If one gets inside it can just keep on stinging. So I think this is a better option. Another thing is after the nest is in the trash I have to get in the car with my wife. So I plan to walk a long way and then remove the outer layer and bag it for the ride home.

new guy to airguns

The Marauder has a 215cc tube, so a .5l(500cc) bottle would get you the equivalent of 2 fills on your Marauder, or around 100 shots if you started with a full Marauder and a full .5l bottle tethered. Also the .5l bottle would need to be regulated to 3000psi, as 4500psi would be too much for the Marauder.

Why not just fill the gun at the range using the compressor you have already ordered, on your car battery, or a separate 12v battery if you are concerned with the car battery. Better yet, do you have power at the range? I would do it like that, at least until you determine if airguns will be a thing for you.

The silicone oil/grease is good to have around. If what you bought is oil, you can get silicone grease at Lowes in the plumbing section. I have bought it in a little tub, and also in a little tube, like toothpaste. Both are good to have around for O rings and stuff.
Picking up the marauder today at the LGS. Throwing out my thoughts to those who know a great deal more than I do, and I APPRECIATE all of the suggestions and comments. I'm used to lithium battery equipment so the compressor I noticed got me interested. Get the gun, read the manual, adjust things to fit on how I want to shoot and go from there. Bench shooting 50 yards, need accuracy not a 'humane kill' for the paper. I'll find out how many shots I can get from a fill and decide if that's enough for the range trip. If my addiction wants more then I'll go from there to what ever is the next step. Thanks to all for the help!!

Sheridan Sights

Can anyone explain what the issue is with the rear sights is on the Sheridan's? I have recently been getting back into the pellet world. Grew up with a Sheridan my grandad let me use. It was given to another family member that could care less about it and has no idea where it is now... Through the years I have been building my centerfire collection. Now that I have a son, I have found myself venturing back to the roots and the basics. In the past month, I have bought an FX impact m4, Huben GK1, and Umarex Notos. As cool as the new ones are, I had to get a few sheridans... I recently purchaced a 64 silver streak and a mint blue streak. I keep seeing where folks say they have removed rear sights to avoid issues. What is this issue and what should i be looking for? Thanks!
