Midnight is BACK!!

Just picked up a brand new .25 Red Wolf in MIDNIGHT Blue!!
These things looks SO good in the blue and gray!
I've had a "Blue Wolf" for many years as my competition gun. Being a multi year championship winning comp gun, you might be able to imagine how dinged up its become from being tossed around during PRS and speed. Even though I'm used to seeing that beautiful blue and gray stock regularly, when I opened up that box for the first time... WHOOOO!! That new gun shine!! Yes! Very nice! 😁

IMG_5104 Medium.jpeg

How is this responsible airguning?

I don't mean to troll or no offense to the ladies at the video. I am sure they are much better shooters than I am. But looking through online YouTube reviews from my BRK Ghost I stumbled upon the youtube channel where the lady kills iguanas in Florida. And on the specific video she does so in an apparently busy parking lot with buildings in the background. Even if the angle of the video is not what it appears to be , what happens if she misses and the pellet goes over the roof. What if it hits a balcony. What's on the other side of the street? I am all about hunting and what not but damn on such a dense urban environment? It's not like she is pointing at a lake bank, or some trees with palmettos and more trees behind, there are straight up buildings behind it. Don't know what to say maybe I am old and cranky with too much common sense?

FX Panthera .22/700mm - Initial Unbiased thoughts & Observations

(Preface - this took me a little longer than anticipated to post .. starting my Monday workday soon, so I'll try and backfill this post with photos and images later on)

Curiosity got the better of me. I was originally planning to hold out for a 600mm in .22, but I'm actually glad that I went with 700mm for this caliber for the 40 grain 2-S node Griffin RBT slugs that I shoot primarily in this caliber. It doesn't actually feel that long (not a broomstick like I thought)!

Although I've only had my hands on this rifle for a couple of days, I think I have enough time with it to make an initial educated assessment.

Unboxing & First Magazine - my objectives were:
  • Getting a feel for the rifle
  • Testing the out of the box tuning configuration
  • Determining the maximum velocity with 40gr ammo with the factor hammer and hammer spring

The first thing that I noticed after unboxing the rifle was the reg pressure. It was sitting at 172bar. I thought this looked weird and sure enough it had crept up from the factory set point. I filled the rifle and didn't touch the power wheel for the first mag, but it clearly had a bunch of valve lock. It took 4-5 shots to get it down to the set point, which appeared to be 132bar.

After verifying the reg set point, I turned up the power wheel to see where it maxed out at 132bar and found that it could shoot the 40gr at 925FPS. I zeroed my optic and and changed my POA (50m) and put (5) shots through the same .22' hole. Not bad!!!

I filled the rifle a second time and saw that regulator jumped up to the low mid-140's. I paused for a bit and ~20 minutes later the regular was sitting at 148bar. I'm thinking at this point that the odds were probably 50/50 that the reg either needs to break in or has a creep issue. A few mags later, the regulator stabilized at 132bar and remained there through Saturday morning. This relieved my concerns and confirmed that the creep issue was transient.

Day 2 - my objectives were:
  • Determining:
    • Maximum power with 40gr (goal: mid-1000's)
    • Optimal hammer weight & hammer spring configuration
  • Getting a feel for this new valve system
  • Gauging efficiency and shot count
751BB120-E6DB-4190-8513-701514340F4F.jpeg

I tried several combinations of springs and hammer weights (up to 14.2 grams) and the maximum velocity that I was able to achieve with what I had on hand was 1007FPS. I DO believe that it could be possible to squeeze more out of the rifle at the cost of shot count (i.e., not enough air capacity for an NRL22 course unless you have a 300bar bottle and multiple air tanks on hand).

There was not much of a difference in velocity when I ran a heavy spring + heavier weight compared to heavier springs and lighter weights. I think the best configuration for max power would be a 16-18 gram weight with a heavier 52mm spring, but I screwed up the heavy 52mm compression spring that I made a few weeks ago and didn't have one to test with over the weekend, so during my testing I used the factory 56mm spring, a heavier 56mm, and a 53mm spring that's in between the two.

Therefore, I was not able to exercise the full capabilities of the vale over ~172.5bar. I was also warned to not use the 26.5 gram tungsten weight with the Panthera, but I suspect that could be due to some early reports of bent valve pins that were being caused by an interference issue when the valve was bottoming out against the Arca rail retaining piece that covers the two brass threaded plugs on the muzzle side of the block.

Day 3 - my objectives were:
  • Finding a viable tune for NRL22
  • Testing precision & accuracy at higher velocities
  • Experimenting with wider grips

82012E06-0D9D-44F9-A932-F6696BA9FC25.jpeg

In short, thus far I have found that the optimal 40gr tune that provides sufficient shot count for NRL22 courses (usually 12 shots max) with the factory 300cc (250bar) bottle is as follows:
  • 1000FPS
    • 170bar
    • Heavier 56mm hammer spring
    • Factory hammer weight
    • ES is 3FPS (18 shots, 997-1000FPS)
    • Minimal recoil, no perceived hammer bounce
    • 14 fully regulated, full power shots with a 250bar fill
      • 15th shot (off-reg) falls 10FPS (989FPS pretty consistently)
Tune Eplanation - I'll try my best to describe some of the important attributes behind this tune:

Reg pressure set point of 170bar (hammer tension is also maxed) is optimal, in that there is STILL some valve lock. There is VERY little recoil and virtually no hammer bounce. The hammer energy is JUST enough to work the valve in a very consistent manner.

In retrospect, the velocity drops to ~985 at 175bar and the ES starts getting erratic (+/- 5FPS) from there. At 160-164bar, the velocity drops down, however the RECOIL and hammer bounce become PRONOUNCED. This translates to optimal precision and an extremely tight ES.

At this point - my split personality Q&A would something along the lines of:
  1. Is it NRL22 worthy? -Yes, definitely. Although the Arca rail has way too much play!!! So much so that it interferes with the shroud, but I already knew this going into this purchase
  2. What about the.22 rimfire speeds and FX's stated max velocities with 40gr (1040FPS)? - Again, I DO believe that if a 300bar 300cc bottle is used, there is more velocity that can be realized. I'm pretty confident that the shout count would be comparable (possibly better) with the reg up a bit higher using a 16-18 gram weight and a shorter heavy spring cut to perfect size (I'm planning to makes some new springs soon from the wire stock that I use to dial this in as best that I can). I also think that it would be worthwhile to test with heavier valve springs to manage VDT for higher power, but I haven't even torn down the rifle that far yet so I can't be certain. The current valve spring feels somewhat weak though.

    That said, I would LOVE to hear from FX on the hammer spring and weight that was used to come up with this 1040FPS/40gr specification.

CRICKET II TACTICAL 70 WST

Really, interesting, and beautifull pcp.

AEA Semi Auto buyers and owners BEWARE!

I recently bought the AEA HP SS .25 air pistol and I have to admit that it is a lot of fun!
Very nice platform and very accurate for such a small barrel.
It has two problems though.

One is major and the other is huge.

The major problem is the magazine. It is pure junk. Cheap plastic, awful construction and badly designed. The spring inside has two extensions (pins), a long one that goes into the rotary wheel and a very short one that goes into the bottom of the magazine. This small one is so sort that after a while it pops up and the magazine stops working. You have to disassemble the magazine and put it back to position, but it will keep doing it because it’s a very bad design. It is also very picky about pellets. The whole construction is very cheap and flimsy.

The second problem that I realized after 100 rounds is huge! Everybody that has used a moderator surely knows that they collect a lot of lead dust inside. The HP and all the other semi autos have a set of baffles inside the shroud and they use the captured air to push back the cocking action in order to load the next pellet automatically. Everybody would have noticed that every time you shoot it, a generous amount of air blows exactly at your face.

This means that after every shot a small amount of very fine lead particulates from the shroud is hitting you right at your face! This dust is hundreds of times more dangerous than handling lead pellets, especially if you inhale it. Lead will be in your bloodstream in a matter of minutes. Carcinogenic and highly neurotoxic.

Buying this air pistol, no matter how fun it is, was a very bad decision unfortunately.
Owners of these semi autos should be aware of this danger which is no fun at all.

Huntsman Revere not up to spec

Recently got a Revere .22 highest power version according to Daystate specs should do 20 shots @ 40 ft/lbs.
I came with the regulator set at 195bar, which i found rather high, but rifle was only shooting at sub12 power. So obviously hammer wasn't adjusted accordingly. Checked with the dealer and got some reasoning according to law, export, blah blah they come underpowered. New to me but ok, no biggie, i adjust the hammer and in the meantime check with Daystate regarding the 195bar reg setting which they confirm is normal for this version.

Problem is, and i went though the whole hammer spectrum only working with small increments, to reach the advertised 40 ft/lbs i only get 11 shots instead of the advertised 20 before it falls of the reg. Going to 30 ft/lbs, which is fine for me, i get short of 25 shots instead of the advertised 45 shots.

Sent rifle back to dealer whom confirmed my results and did further testing on the rifle by also adjusting reg pressure but cannot get the rifle up to the specs of 45 shots @ 30 ft/lbs 20 shots @ 40 ft/lbs. Dealer tested another rifle from same lot and has same results so they are now dealing with Daystate regarding.

Brilliant rifle otherwise, laser accurate, great trigger, fab stock... can't flaunt it.

Haven't heard anywhere about a Revere not performing up to the advertised specifications? Anybody with a similar experience?

SOLD Sold pending meet. Daystate LC-110 compressor, Atlanta F2F or ship

Time for me to move on from airguns and the first thing to go is my compressor. Everything else will list after this sells. If it doesn't sell, then I guess I just hang on to it all....

This is Daystate LC-110 compressor I purchased from AOA. It is in excellent shape with 13.9 hours on it. Service was performed as prescribed and I also upgraded the fill attachment to a female QD. Original parts come with as does the original box, papers, hour meter and half a pint of oil. The pressure gauge glass has some micro cracks in it - I received it this way from AOA and it never bothered me. Works fine - if you want to replace it it is a standard size and available from AOA or online. This is the 110V model and fills to 4500psi with auto shutoff. Compressor will ship in the original packaging if you are not local. Looks like these now go for $2500 at AOA....

$2000 F2F in Atlanta or ship on your dime. Payment by cash if local or PP / Venmo friends and family.

Skout Epoch first impressions

Hey guys, I recently received my Skout Epoch .30 and after a few days testing it out and getting familiar with it, I did a quick write up on Instagram. Michael thought some of you might like to read it, so I copied and pasted it for AGN. If you want to see the original, it’s under kevinjstoughton There are a couple other Epoch posts, reels and lots of Daystate, FX and RAW posts too. Have a great week!
Stoti

I had a lot of messages and questions yesterday about the Skout Epoch .30 that I didn’t want to answer until I had a chance to shoot it a lot more. Today I did just that.

First off, the build quality, features, included accessories, fit, finish & ergonomics are incredible!

It shoots the JSB 44.75, 50.15, the FX 44.8 & 50.2 grain all great at 50, 75 & 100yds. It was very windy today & I still shot some great groups at all yardages. All of the shooting today was with the standard barrel. I haven’t touched the +.001” or -.001” barrels yet. Accuracy was superb & all I had to do to reach the desired velocity range for each pellet was adjust the HP reg. up or down a tiny bit… No need to degass & I never touched the LP reg. or dwell function.

As for power, I haven’t shot anything super heavy yet but when shooting the 50.15gr pellets at 865-875fps the HP regulator was only on 79bar. There’s a lot of room to turn it up & shoot heavy slugs fast!

The shot count, as you can imagine, was extremely high. I was using the 50.15gr pellets on 79bar with a 700cc bottle filled to 250bar. It is efficient, between 1.5-2.0 bar per shot(conservative), you can do the math… that’s a lot of shots per fill.

The Epoch is easy to adjust both manually & electronically, it’s very intuitive & has a bright, easy to read OLED display. I had it set up in no time & made changes very quickly. The trigger superb!!! I never had to adjust anything with it, it was perfect for my taste right out of the box. The shot cycle on 79bar was super smooth with almost no recoil. The proprietary moderator is well made & does a wonderful job of taming the report. All of the manual adjustment knobs for the cheek rest , lop, & butt pad are quick, easy & lock down solidly when in place.

I’ll have a lot more info to share in the future, after I test various pellet weights at different velocities & can shoot without a 20mph wind. I also want to play with all the electronic features but especially the LP reg. & electronic dwell feature to see the effects on precision. There is a lot more testing to do over the following weeks & months but I wanted to give my initial impressions for those that asked. Have a good one. Kevin

Leupold?

I've been lurking around for a long while and I see a lot of mention of scopes like Athlon and Discovery and Arken and Vortex and there are a few others that seem real popular, but I don't see anyone mentioning Leupold. I have been into air guns forever, but not so much as rimfire guns on which my favorite has always been Leupold. I know mostly the parallax on most of the Leupolds will either be set at 100 yards, or an adjustable not go low enough, which is why I usually use the EFR models which go low enough for airguns so I thought I'd see more of them around.

That being said, I do only have a couple of side adjustable scopes in leupold and the more I am getting into airguns the more I like the side knob as opposed to the adjustment on the objective bell.

Is it just the cost, or the limited models that adjust to a close enough range that make them rare here?

Question to target shooters only - what scope?

Posting my question here instead of Optics thread, I am shooting target papers only and not really interested for hunters imput. ;)
My .25 cal FX Impact is a dedicated BR gun for 50-100-125 meters, and my primary target scope is a Falcon X50 SFP (10-50x60).
Setting up now my next .22 cal airgun for 20-100 meters, and shopping for a target scope with a clarity again that I can see the projectile chewing the hole edges.
I had tried many scopes in the past impulse buy from whatever utubers influencers and hunters, that won't work again, I got rid of all the scopes kept the Falcon only.
Along my way I have developed some preferences:

- SFP, I cannot stand the reticle growing or changing size;
- parallax adjustment down to 10 meters;
- minimum power 24 and up;
- or fixed power about 40 ish;
- I like the B20 style or any other simple reticles;
- I click dial the known distances so holdover/under is only secondary thought;
- a full clarity and sharp edges at full power setting;
- for a secondary scope I would set the dollar cap to 5-600;
- second hand may give me a better glass for the money;
- I can wait couple months for a deal;

What would you recommend?

Original smooth twist barrel shooters.

No one probably cares anymore or maybe everyone knows but I thought I would throw this out there. I have always heard that the ST barrel really only likes JSB. Well that isn’t true. At full power shooting 18’s the jsb are the best but H&N barracuda 18 gr are negligibly worse. They shoot pretty awesome. Today I also found that my streamline will shoot crosman 14 gr pellets if you shoot them at like 750 fps. I was super pleased. Below is a photo of my crosman squirrel target. I shot 3 mags at 42.2 yards. I did have one flyer that missed the yellow paddle but all others were right there. I guess I was pretty surprised. A good lower power shooter with these crappy pellets out to 45 anyway.

First attempt at sorting by weight

20230226_161420.jpg

Ok so I'm really not sure exactly how to process this. My gut is telling me to seperate the 15.98gr (possibly 15.94gr?) through 16.12gr into a seperate tin for testing. These pellets as a whole have done very well for me aside from the occasional flier. Looking at the group here I think its safe to say where those occasional fliers came from...

Just looking for some insight from guys who have done this before I start grouping them. It's a bit too windy to do that today anyway so hopefully next week.
