I zero scoped rifles by holding the rifle steady in a rest and moving the scope’s reticle from the point of aim to a shot group’s point of impact. It works great.
Recenly, I was having a hard time zeroing a rifle with a rear receiver peep sight. I ran across this acronym ‘FORS’ for which direction to move the sight’s point of aim for front sights (scopes) and rear receiver sights (peep/notched sights). After doing some more searching, the acronym has been around for a long time. It’s helping me keep it straight.
FO = front opposite (for scopes move the point of aim ‘POA’ opposite the direction the point of impact ‘POI’ needs to move) examples: to move the POI up move the POA down and to move the POI right move the POA left
RS = rear same ( for rear receiver peep/notched sights move point of aim ‘POA’ the same direction the point of impact ‘POI’ needs to move). examples: to move the POI up move the POA up and to move the POI right move the POA right
