Young Fox

Not Really a hunting post but thought you folks might have realistic input.

We have a young fox cruising the back porch, driveway, garage and really doesn’t seem to be afraid of me. If I walk within 10-15 feet he’ll walk a few feet away. I think he’s on his own and hungry

I really don’t see a reason to take him out other that my wife is scared and my dog (same size as the fox) is head butting the window and is and messing up the blinds.

Trap, let him be, other? I have 13 acres, If I take food down to the far corner of the property can I avoid making a pet while getting him health enough to live on his own?

i have pics but don’t know how to post them from my phone

I'll leave it be. I'm more tempted to feed it (not near the house) then anything else, totally strikes me as hungry and alone. Even as I approached her(?) just walked very slowly away and sat down behind the patio chairs. Just thought this deserved the pic attempt again. Both pics are 6-8 feet between the 2 of us. Not aggressive at all but I'm not tempted to to try approach any closer.

I would train him to fear humans with noise (shotgun blast or something) but otherwise id let him be if i wasnt a chicken farmer. If you dont have chickens, i see no reason to off him. I love foxes, just have to take them out because of my chicken flock (800 layers out on pasture)

This. 100 percent. They carry some diseases including mange, intestinal parasites, heartworm, etc so I wouldn't want him that comfortable around humans, but I also wouldn't want to completely scare him off. Having him around will help with rodents, but no need to have him 3 feet from you.

I agree with the consensus. Actually, I haven't seen it since taking those pics almost 2 days ago. That's the longest stretch in near a month it hasn't show itself. so we'll see. Just tugs at me a little. I rescued my dog and it acted the same for weeks when we brought it home. No illusions of making a pet of it but I feel bad for it.

I might still put food out, appox 1/4 mile from the house. I know exactly where a den WAS there. Want to give her a chance but don't want to make her reliant OR just let her go. If nothing else, something will eat the food and appreciate it rather than just tossing it in the trash.

I'll stop this here. Thanks for the input.

You have a good heart, JCD. I have foxes in my neighborhood on occasion and it gives me a thrill to see them. When I came across an injured one hiding under a car, I called the wildlife officers and they said they would do nothing to help or hinder them. They are hardly ever a nuisance or a danger to pets. I have established in my yard a healthy hardwood hammock. It attracts quite a lot of wildlife, both prey and predator. Ain't nature grand?

I haven't seen an adult in maybe 2 years. They (the adults I've seen) are skittish and run when they know I'm around. Unfortunately, I did encounter a second young fox yesterday. Smaller and different coloring markers. I didn't have my phone with me (I've lost too many phones when out cutting) so no pics. It too didn't really seem to care that I was there. I was on my tractor so I chased it into the woods. Def time to resort to SCARE tactics. Really can't carry my shotgun with me on my small tractor... maybe a talonp though (with the shotgun at hand when around the house) . The shotgun hangs around close anyway... coyote and bear (only a handful of sightings) seem to be taking more to this area (lots of land and woods) just outside ever expanding surburban areas, and I'm outside alot into the late evenings.

Thanks for that. I've planted about 2 acres of white pine and 'propogated' about an acre of whatever grew naturally . Between the 2 areas, I've got about a thousand new trees. My only limitations have been an (big) area I can't plant and another big area that gets little sun so regrowth is slow. Oh, and a neighbor that complains that I need to cut at leasr 2x a year per county regs. I told him to take me to court 😄. But this is all is even further off topic so I'll stop.
