You guys will pellet scales ruined my day, thanks a lot!

Well Adder now I have to get a head gauge.
I have to contradict what I earlier posted some what. Had calm winds at the range Sunday. Shot 3 5 shot groups of the lighter pellets 50 yards. 3 of the listed weight. All half inch or less. At 100 yards? I could put rounds in or around the 2" splatter, 4 of 5 either weight, sometimes 5 of 5. Disappointing some what but OK. Those are head shots. the weight didn't matter. Here was the ahhh moment. There was a golf ball below my target. I put the cross hairs on it and shot. Bounced it. Did it again Bounced it. 6 times in a row I bounced it. I didn't hold on it and try to hit a dimple, I just found center and sent it. Went back to the 2" target found center and shot it. a -1.5" group. Then they shut down. Think I may have been holding on center to long over thinking the shot.
Fun figuring it all out!

Hi all, a very interesting topic.

I'm primarily a powder burner but events have led me into the airgun world with a vengeance.

Having chased my tail with several high quality airguns over recent years I'm onto an Impact in .22

AFAIK most powder scales are accurate to 1 tenth of a grain, so is it worth using them? I've tried using $1800 lab scales that will have you running to ever finer divisions with no discernable return for the effort.

IMHO and limited experience I’ve found that head size and skirt roundness/ratio seems to return the most gains with regard to effort v gain. My rifle running at 901fps with JSB 18.13gn will shoot very well; certainly good enough for my vermin control needs.

My barrel likes a small head size, 5.49mm to be exact. That means I have to put each pellet through a re-sizer which takes about 1 second per pellet.

The two 50yd groups below were enough to persuade me to just wash, lube and then re-size. After spending some time trying different head sizes I shot the two groups below. Although they are nothing special size wise, I think they do show gain v effort nicely. The one on the left is un-sized, the right hand group was shot using sized pellets from the same tin.

Here are 3600 JSB MKII weighed to within 1/10th of a grain and sorted by weight. I had weights from 32.8 grains all the way up to 34.9 grains. Of course I cleaned them all first in Acetone and dried them thoroughly before weighing them. Then I fill empty cans and label them according to the various weights. This makes a big difference in the chronograph numbers, and a huge difference in accuracy. This process completely eliminates flyers! As far as head size is concerned I measured pellets that weighed 32.8 grains and ones that weighed 34.9 grains and everything in between and the head sizes were all the same. If you want precision accuracy then start weighing and sorting all your pellets...otherwise you will never achieve the kind of accuracy I do. My last step is to lube all my pellets with Napier Power Pellet Lube...it will increase your accuracy by 50%! Below are some pics to check out...

P.S. If you naysayers think a pellet that weighs 32.8 is going to hit the target in the same spot as one weighing 33.8 or 34.8 you are sadly mistaken. If you want your pellets all to hit the target in the same spot then they have to all weigh the same number one, and number two they have to be pushed at a consistent velocity that is close to the same for each shot...which is where a consistent Huma regulator comes into play.

All the best, Chuck

Ever since I have been doing the same process as Chuck I have gotten pellet on pellet accuracy at 50yds! I will be getting a shipment of pellets when PA gets them back in stock and will be going through the whole process of cleaning, weighing and lubing pellets again! He also threw me a tin to use when I was out of MKii pellets and they were just perfect! What a nice guy!!
