You absolutely need high magnification, and high velocity to shoot small groups

I’m a big believer in magnification. Big magnification equals small groups right? Speed also helps. Look at what the ultimate BR shooters are shooting these days.

Something really sophisticated with lots of gadgets plenums scope mounts bench rests etc.

Or you could go old-style and see what you can do with an open sight 5 foot pound rifle at medium range...

It would be interesting to see how many folks can beat this target with their high-powered PCPs, especially in 17 caliber.

There was going to be a contest, for all the springer guys. Who could shoot the smallest group with open sights at 42 yards. This was months ago at the beginning of the pandemic. Then it morphed into where scopes were allowed.

I wanted to shoot something really small. So I grabbed all my really nice Springers and started shooting. I wanted a one whole bug 🐜 eye 👁 at 42 yards.

Then I realized that I was averaging around an inch or so with the groups, occasionally smaller. And realized I was not on the path to a bug eye group with my powerful springers.

So I grabbed my 150 FWB. I was able to get four shots in one little tiny hole but of course I pulled the fifth one a half an inch away, see pics.

Then I decided to try the 300, not 300s, plain 300. Jim E and I have been friends for many years. He picked me out to send this rifle to. He knew I would do a good job refinishing the stock. The metal is almost perfect. I have not really ever shot it much. It is gorgeous!!!

I shot a few groups, and then magic happened. They were all in one little Cloverleaf.

The group was shot with a 50-year-old rifle, still all original. Target sites, from a bench rest. Conditions were excellent. Pellet was 8.4 JSB. 5 ft pnd rifle ...

I took pictures of the magic group, and many others. I also took some pictures of the set up. The groups were hitting below the dots drawn on the box, All I had to do was change the paper.

Meh?? Watch a review of the rifle! They are a work of art for certain. I just bought a mini from Jim, can’t wait to get it!! Penguinwithagun would smile and be amazed if he shot one. This is going to be my first springer, not counting garbage. That stock is mind blowing, I’m sure my mini is going to have a stock like that lol! And I wish!!!

Flintsack, I’m planning on scoping the mini with a Leupold 3-9x with the fine hairs. But first I’ll try the original sights it comes with. I’m so impressed with your group at 42 yards! Wow. And now I own one!! I’ll post pictures as soon as it gets here. What is your best pellet? Jim told me that the light 7.33 grain is best. I’m really excited to get it.
