OK, after a search here for a used HW44, a great AGN user tips me off about a used gun he himself had traded into a major retailer (to remain anonymous for now). So I strike a really nice deal and say to them, hey lets make this nicer-throw on a red dot and set me up. They come back and say ok perfect this is the sight to get, Ohhh wait, we are out of stock on that one, how about this one and we'll give it to you for the same price, its a bit 'nicer'. The optic is a Vortex Spitfire, mfg website shows them for $350, Optics planet has them for $250, they charged me $179. So I should be happy right?

here is where it gets strange!

The gun shows up...and its not the used one. Nope- its brand spanking new. Ummm, score for me. Has air in it, and a chrony readout, must have been shot right... but the test card was blank in that area- odd. Lets shoot it man this is a bigger optic than expected. First shot at 12yards- nips the edge of the paper- what in hell? 4 inches wide at 12 yd?. Do it again, same thing but pellet on pellet. Lets focus the reticle, hmmmm this thing is adjusting from lock to lock and there's not a huge focus difference in the reticle against that flat background- weird, get it as close as possible and keep shooting, time is running out for the night. Ok lets look at the simple little manual the optic came with-nope not much in there. OK, lets re zero it then. Hey strange that the outer moa circle takes up the entire eyebox-just noticed there is massive parallax shift, thought this was virtually parallax free. Targets on paper, adjusting, shooting, more adjusting-finally she took basically every click of windage adjustment to pull it close, but still not enough, look at the 4 targets with 1 shot each, they look like copies of each other, holding on the center. LOL.

something is up, but I'm tired, time is up, pack it in for the day.

So NOW I am home, looking at it again and I go to the website to pull the manual or see some reviews etc...Hmmmmm, this optic is not shown on a pistol? what's the eye relief say: LMAO- 3.8" OHHHHH that AND it was MOUNTED BACKWARDS. SMH maybe if I had turned on the illumination I would have noticed sooner the buttons facing downrange!

So this major retailer gave me a new gun, rather than pre-owned- which was great, and cut me a nice deal on a cool red dot- also great. BUT its NOT a functional package like I asked for due to the rifle length eye relief. It seems they shot it over the chrony, but either not on a target OR the 'blank' target print area was blank because every pellet was a mile off paper cause the optic was bassackwards. and when you order over the phone and the 'experts' say yeah this is a great setup...and you are the noob to airguns, you just kind of say cool take my money, I'm getting a sweet deal so thank you. Lesson learned I can still handle sight in myself, stop being a lazy butt and pay more attention

SOOOO- how do I play this? Do I 'take a win' and sell the optic and not cause a stir? becasue I can't use this optic, and I don't want it for another gun that I don't own. The gun did not even fit in the carry bag they sold me for it, its like a comedy of errors. Or do I call them up and tell them whoever 'set me up' needs to 'set up' a new job interview. What would you guys do?

Sixty years of life has made me cynical because most of the time when I tried to follow the "Honestly is the best policy" my parents instilled in me I got the feces end of the stick (usually in the eye too), cheated and un-appreciated for it.

So do what benefits you most.

Think of their errors as "Evolution in action", they will learn to do better or go out of business.

I'd sell the sight and buy what you want.

Enjoy the new gun.

so if the pistol was a great price and you can break even on selling the red dot I would be fine with that but I would tell them about the mounting backwards

now on the red dot, first one I have seen with a eye relief at all and in your looking as the deal came together maybe you should have noticed

or maybe the sell should have known better to put a rifle only red dot on a pistol

it sure is shooting well as all the HW44 do, so in the long run it might be just a bump in the road

maybe this brand would have something you can use

they are first class

I have a Matchdot 2 on a HW70A, very nice red dot I like it a lot.

I have a Burris 2-7 on my HW44, I like it, but wish I would have sprung for the Burris 3-12. The HW44 is super accurate and the combination of my poor eyesight and wanting to shoot farther = me looking for more magnification.

I would not recommend a red dot for the HW44, I feel you will really be limiting yourself with the HW44 capabilities, unless you plan on shooting under 25 yards or shooting large targets at longer distances. I would ask the seller to pay for return shipping and a refund. There are better choices IMO.

If your case has a pocket large enough for the Silencer, unscrew it and put it in the pocket.

Yep the HW44 is no longer 'new', and I am happy to keep it!

I chose a red dot because my quarry is mainly iguanas, and while I've killed plenty with a well placed 6fpe .177 shot, for the most part you have to really hit them hard, even with my wildcat .25- shot placement is critical on a dinosaur. Many of them I can shoot at 50+ yd, but there are plenty to shoot at 10-20yd and this is where I wanted the HW44, so the longer range of it is not needed in my case. It's also for mop up duty if they are playing possum-which happens a lot if the first shot isn't clean.

Waiting to hear back from the vendor
