Wind flags at EBR?

I know this may a little off topic but i am interested in trying EBR. This topic got me thinking the contest can be a bit unfair to certain shooters. ( i know life isnt fair boohoo) but the contest should be in a controlled or inside environment. Because the wind and weather usually changes from early morning to the afternoon. If your LUCKY enough to get a good time to shoot or get a lane which is better protected from the wind you have a distinct advantage over others. So even if you are a favorite to win and are a great shooter your ability will be limited due to your line position and time of day. Im not complaining just wondering if my assumption is correct..

Partially true. Each line has a bit of a different personality and most shoot begin to figure it out as the competition moves on. Again sighters help you to figure this out once you are on the line too. Top shooters can make the adjustments necessary for their lane.

As for the time of day, you are only competing against other shooters in your heat to move on to the finals. So the time of day has the same effect on all the shooters in your heat. The finals are completed in one heat. Again everyone has a similar environment to shoot in.

Hope this helps....

When you see the effort put into the EBR shoot I think you would be surprised how level the playing field really is .

Like Chad said you are competing with your competition at the same time ..I shot Springer and we were all grouped together on consecutive benches at the same end of the range and all shot at the same time .

As for the flags , once you begin to use them your scores go up for sure . Even guys like me who didn't have their own flags watched other folks flags to try and shoot at a good time in between wind gusts .

If you are thinking of going DO IT ! It is a blast ! Tons of cool folks and great hosts . I can't say enough about what a great time I had there , and with the guys I stayed with .

The playing field is as level as they can make it. For the qualifying rounds at 75 yards, each 40 person group shoots against each other, and the top 10 in each group make it to the 100 yard final round. For the two 75 yard rounds, you are assigned a lane, same lane for both rounds. For the finals, you draw a number from a hat for your lane. Unfortunately, last year the Sportsmen were given lanes 1 to 10 to draw from, and the Pros lanes 11 to 40. So, there is a bit of luck involved since lanes 1 to 10 are all the way to the left side of the range next to the 10 foot tall berm, and winds seem to swirl a lot more there than they do at the other lanes... Obviously that was why 1 to 10 were assigned to the Sportsman Class...

Oh, and yes, winds flags are allowed. Some guys used them, some didn't. But I'll bet the guys that didn't use them looked at the flags of the guys that did... ;)

If the competition were indoors the winner would likely be chosen by whomever spent the most time & money on their rig. "Most" competition ready airguns nowadays will shoot +1/-1 MOA. The wind is the ultimate equalizer. Learn your gun, sort your ammo, and practice in the wind as much as possible.

The format has been 2 days of qualifying at 75y. 4 relays (groups) each day. You only compete against your relay. They combine your 2 day scores and the top 10 from each relay move on to the 100y final (all the same relay).

Flags are super helpful. I'm no flag expert, but i've gotten pretty good at reading the wind 😉

I think you'll find that the wind nearest the muzzle will amplify the downrange impact more than if there's only wind at the target. That being said I've been tricked more than once with zero wind at the muzzle and strong wind at 100y. I don't own a set of flags but I always look at the flags that others have placed. You'd be surprised how much the wind varies at different distances at Rio Salado. 🌀 Here's a neat write up on some of the Airflow Characteristics at Rio Salado shooting range.

Depending on the stability of the conditions I'd recommend two different strategies; either shooting in consistent wind, or rattling off a bunch of shots during a lull (but you better have extra mags ready). You may find that the wind will be steady more often than not.

Flags are much easier to read than grass, trees, dirt, so if they're available I'd recommend using them 👌

Hope this helps

Don't forget that at EBR you used MY flags and chair. I think I had a part in you winning .. LOL
