Events Will RMAC be cancelled?

If this scare of the coronavius gets bad enough? I say this because this event I participate every year called the Bataan Death March has been canceled just days away from happening. This event brings in people from all over the world and just like that, they cancel it. Could this happen with RMAC? I don't watch TV anymore and I don't have facebook or any social media but from what my wife tells me they are cancelling a lot of cruises all over the world and large events. The reason can be related to the virus but the main reason these cruises and events being cancel is because a lot of people are canceling their reservations to the point its not financially feasible to have a cruise or the event.

Many experts, who know much more than we do, feel that it's serious enough to cancel non-essential public events. The 1918 flu pandemic killed about 50 million worldwide; close to 700,000 in the US alone. Others since that time have been less severe but deadly nonetheless. Considering past pandemics I think to error on the side of caution is the wisest choice, inconvenient though it may be.

heres my question.......

why now?

mark my words someone somehow will figure out a way to hold someone accountable for the death of a family member from “THE REGULAR FLU” . 12000 people in the us have died this year from existing flu strains. nobody cared about that, or demanded percautionary measures. this is just another strain. i wouldnt say it is worse than any other. its just because it is new. and like always. THE MEDIA GETS ALOT OF PEOPLE EXCITED.

I don't think it's really any worse than any of the other "flus" that have developed over the last 20 or so years. That being said, I'm now in the age group that gets hit hardest by these types of things. Is it time to panic? Not for me. The media pisses me off. They count on panic, violence & aberrant behavior to sell their product & overplay & overstate EVERYTHING! I'll use common sense to mitigate the chances of catching it but, hey, SOMETHING'S gonna get me sooner or later. Should RMAC or any other event be cancelled? I'll just hope the real experts decide about "common gatherings" & not people freaking out because of the "news".

Time will tell I guess? Could get interesting if things don’t setting down? because it may be a deciding factor in who attends this event, overseas shooters and factory teams may decide not to fly to the states, Utah airguns may not cancel but sure will limit the exposure and potential sales of products etc. may be more of a economic decision? Besides who wants to see a “mere mortal” win a big event like that!😏 (also want to add its not me I worry about but I don’t want to infect others like my parents who both are in there 70’s and other family members!, and as of right now I’m not flying so I won’t be seeing my boy who lives in SLC)

I'm not worried Nick. Wearing camo 24 hrs a day now. Wife's positioned at the front window with my .30. I'm @ the back with my .25 & a BIG machete. Also gave the SRM (Squirrel Revenge Ministry) YOUR address as my place of residence! Covered your house in peanut butter & sunflower seeds while you slept last night as added insurance. Cover your ass my friend.

No Way! First off, 1918 conditions (during the last year of WWI) were way, way different and worse healthwise than 2020. Next, the "over 3% death rate" you tout is hopelessly lacking in factual evidence, since it was based on reported cases versus posirtives reported deaths, and few intelligent reporters won't admit the ACTUAL number of those contracting versus known reported is much different. It likely that the majority of people contracting the virus were never tested, and didn't know they had a serious illness.

Not to say its not wise to take precaution, but spreading spurious data like a death rate many times the realistic estimates is just wrong.

Obviously we have better treatments available today than in 1918, but that isn't the only occasion when we've had deadly epidemics. In 1957 the estimated number of deaths was 1.1 million worldwide and 116,000 in the United States. 1968 the estimated number of deaths was 1 million worldwide with about 100,000 in the United States. 2009 estimated deaths in the US was 12,469. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/basics/past-pandemics.html

I'm not the one touting a death rate, that's a quote from Dr. Fauci regarding World Health Organization estimates. I sincerely doubt that you have more accurate information than the Director of the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the World Health Organization for which I posted a link. I consider them to be highly reputable sources and not ones to spread fake data.

Quite honestly I hope they are all completely wrong, but considering the risk I still think that it's better to err on the side of caution.

Our club has a field target match coming up next weekend. I hope it doesn't get canceled. I hope the RMAC match doesn't get canceled for everyone that's planing to go.

AND, these things may need to be canceled. I get it about the medita hyping things up. It's turned into an entertainment industry. Yet, people who have spent their entire professional carreers in the field of public health and disease control are all weighing in with the same message. And that is, it's going to get worse before it gets better. Might make sense to listen to what they have to say and put our opinions aside when it comes to how we act/respond. Seems like Hawkeye's last sentence just above is prudent advice.

One way to look at having to have the things we enjoy canceled, is that staying home will be one small part that we can all play to support the cause of everyone's well-being.
