A member sent me a question as a pm that I prefer to answer here on the open forum because I get asked this quite often. Here is his question… "Hello Chuck, is it possible to open WC VS to 6.5 mm??  In your opinion, Is there enough material?? My unequivocal answer to this question is no…leave it alone!

I say this for several good reasons…like first I don't think there is enough material there to make that modification safely…and how in the world would one of us laymen go about finding out what the margin of safety is on that? I asked Ernest this question many years ago during a conversation about tuning Wildcats and he also feels that there is not enough material there to try this safely.

Secondly, in tuning and tinkering with my .25 and .30 Wildcats I have been able to achieve pretty good results without any modification to the valve seat of either rifle. Many years ago I discovered how to tune my Wildcat .25 and Streamline .25 to shoot the JSB 34 grain pellets at an avg. velocity of 895-900 ft/s for an avg of 60-61 ft lbs energy, and do that with laser accuracy at that! Then several months ago after receiving my Wildcat .30 I discovered how to increase the power so that she shoots the 50 grain JSB's at 895-900 ft/s also which yields 89-90 ft lbs energy. And she shoots the 44.75 grain JSB's at 925-930 ft/s which yields 85-86 ft lbs energy. And my Wildcat .30 is laser accurate at these power levels.

The bottom line? I believe my own experiments show that enlarging the Wildcat valve seats is completely unnecessary and might possibly be a very dangerous modification.

    All the best, Chuck

    Thanks for your answer….

Is the VS in .30 cal WildCat larger than the .25 cal??

If so.. is it possible to mod a .30 cal into a .25 cal to get more power (in .25 cal)??

    Thanks Chuck

There's a reason Ernest used titanium with the big valve seats.  I imagine he broke several because the material isn't thick enough to be enlarged by that much.

After your 1st response, I am NOT planning to modify any WC valve seat , good advise!!

My question is:  does the WildCat .30 cal comes with a larger valve when compared to the .25 cal??

What exactly is it you're trying to accomplish?
