Wildcat sub 12 .22

Hello everybody my first post here looking for some information. I purchased the other day a new sub 12 (uk) .22 wildcat. Went off to the indoor range at 30yrds and couldn't get a group less than an inch. I have some pictures but no idea how to upload on here im not super computer literate. Any how if you guys could feed me some information on what i could try would be great. Barrel has been checked for alignment. i was using jsb exact jumbo diablo in 5.52, falcons and H&N ft trophy all in 5.52. Love the gun but not how it shoots. Could it be that if i try 5.51 or 5.50 the groups could change? I know in my rapid 7 it likes 5.51 but hates 5.52 so can it be the same with the smooth twist barrel? Really looking forward to your replys and knowledge. Many thanks

Regards Tim

Hi timskie, also in the UK and have had a .22 sub 12 WC for nearly 6 months. Love it. Thinking about a slot for an FAC .25.

First of all, if its a new gun, have you cleaned the barrel? I used a pull through and then some VFG 22 cleaning pellets, the first moistened with gun oil.
(Make sure fluff doesn't accumulate in the shroud). There was loads of crud in my new barrel and it took about a dozen felt pellets before they came out clean.

After that, it took at least a couple of hundred pellets to get the barrel leaded in and for me to dial into the rifle properly.

Pellet wise, mine likes jsb exacts and exact heavies in 5.52. Also likes JSB express, but JSB RS not so much. I got samples of exacts in 5.51 and 5.53, but they were no better. IIRC it hated H&N FTTs.

8 shot groups:
0.4" edge to edge, at 22yards.
1.25" Edge to edge outside at 58yards light side wind JSB 18gr Heavies. 11.3fpe.

Have you chronographed yours?

Thank you for your reply. Yes iv'e cleaned the barrel Mark and shot nearly 1000 pellets through it. The 18 grain pellets are to heavy for my liking in sub 12 but if i can get some ill give them a go. Manufacturer claims a .5 inch group at 50 meters and im not getting an inch at 30 yrds. Iv'e been told to polish the barrel and it will 100% make it shoot but i'm not sure if i should or not. Chronographed mine yes mate and it runs at 566-573fps. Quite consistent i think. Grouping is toss though.

I had similar troubles with my new fx bobcat, also sub 12flb. Groups at 30 yards were like a shotgun. It was all down to not only pellet choice, but head size. After spending over £100 on different pellets over a period of a few months I found my bobcat would only shoot h&m barracuda match in 4.51 head size. It can sometimes be something as simple as that. My rifle is very pellet fussy. Also it was my first bullpup and I found I had to learn how to hold it correctly. I actually sent mine back to be told there was nothing wrong with it and had to pay for delivery. Keep at it, it'll come good in the end.

Well back from the range tried 5.52 again 5.51 and 5.50 and all just rubbish. It is very in-consistent,it did group a tad some times but 5 out of 8 made it like an 1.5 inch group at 30. Maybe it is me but i shoot my rapid 7 in 22 ace. The POI on the thing seems to change too always with a pellet a mile off then one on bull one touching then a shotgun pattern with the rest of the magazine.

Thank you for your help guys

Maybe get a sample pack of different pellets to try if you have those. In the states we have Straight Shooters that carry them. I have no experience with .22, but I have a .25 wildcat and I'm getting .5 inch group's all the way out to 65 yards. There has to be a fix for you.air arms, h and n, daystate li ?

Hi Eddie, thank you for the reply. I have tried Jsb in every head size,I've tried falcon, accupel,H&N FT Trophy,AirArms. I've spent over £100 on pellets and still no joy. I'll take it back and leave it with them. See what they say, should have listened to myself in the shop before buying it. Told myself don't trust anything other than your rapid 7 Tim! Well I was right to tell myself that,I was wrong not to listen to myself haha.

They do things backwards here in the uk Eddie, not to mention the power rules. I think any air rifle shoots better at FAC level compared to sub12. I am going to take it back and in all fairness id'e like .5 inch at 50 yards like the manufacturer claims. I absolutely love the rifle and don't want to be with out it but if i cant hit anything with it it's useless to anybody. At 50 yards with any pellet i try i might as well throw the pellets by hand ill get tighter groups,it is so inconsistent and very frustrating. Eddie thank you for your time in replying. I will keep you posted on developments.
