Why The Hercules in 35 is a Terrible Gun...

Let me preface this with the disclaimer I am new to this hobby, but life a long hunter and know my way around centerfire rifles and even dabbled somewhat successfully in long range shooting using said rifles. I’ve posted on here as to why air guns appeal to me and why I’ve gone “all in” and even sold some of my centerfire rifles to pay for this new endeavor. Not knowing what the heck I was doing after owning only a couple break barrels and enjoying them I watched one or two YouTube videos on the Hercules and pulled the trigger. I elected for the 35 caliber because we have coyotes, big raccoons, fox etc around the property and was hoping this would be the answer to the 223... off the porch. Here are my observations

1. The magazine is worthless. It jams and it only accepts TWO pellets on the market. The 35 caliber pellet is elusive but there are a handful on the the market. It’s accepts Hatsans offering and the JSB offering.. thats it... for 1200 bucks... that’s a joke

2. Shot count.... over hyped and impractical. You get two really good hole in hole magazines out of this. (16 shots) More than enough for hunting purposes but here is the caveat.... the best hunting rounds don’t fit in this magazine... no slugs, no polymags... etc... the third magazine drops a bunch... not enough of a drop to miss a raccoon at 25 but it’s a drop... fire three mags in this and pull out your carbon fiber tank and refill... your carbon fiber tank will be empty in 5 fills maybe 6....

3. Accuracy... hole in hole at 25-50.....75 not so much.. starts to drift ALOT. The gun is accurate and will take a predator at 75 but you better know your reticle drops and you better be in the first 16 shots... after that it is spray and pray...

4. Heavy, long, and awkward. I have tried hunting coons with this at night and its a %$G show... This thing is too long and too heavy to get on sight on target quickly. It’s as long as 50 cal BMG... not a suitable form factor for air gunning... as new as I may be this would be the last thing I would take out to hunt coons or anything at night.

5. Short of bench shooting or bling hunting this gun is abysmal. It’s heavy, long, and hard to carry. Off bags it’s hole in hole at 25-50 but a 35 isn’t generally used as a bench rest shooting gun.... Hatsan missed the mark here and I wish I had my 1200 back.

I do not know what to say, other than bigger is not always better. It does seem many people are happy with .25 some go to .30.....more learning and experience will prove that waiting is worth while and You will not have to admit you do not know what you were doing, butt man you sure blasted your Hercules....now you need to blast your targets.

The Hercules was optimized by there new design, its the Bully.

The Bully is good balanced but in 35 or 45 to weak from the power level without some tuning.

For the people who playing with the idea to buy a Hercules, the Bully is the better choice from balance and handling.

Best caliber for that was 30 its in power and accuracy well balanced

Steelo look for a single shot tray i think someone in the forum make them for the Hatsan pcps

Steelo32 I'm not trying to be offensive but did you do any research before you bought your Hatsan? I have been looking at pcp guns for awhile now and the first thing I see on every Hatsan review, video or post is that THEY ARE HEAVY. The other interesting thing is you think 16 shots is bad. Seriously? For a big bore that is incredible! I'm not expert but I don't think there are many (if any) other big bores that can do 16 full power shots. It is a bummer about the magazine only accepting certain ammo. The big bore stuff is ammo limited starting with .30 cal and up. I only have a few options with my .30 Wildcat so I feel you there. The single shot tray might help with some ammo but single shot loading sucks in my opinion. Just curious have you looked into any NSA slugs for your Hatsan? I measured the 44.75 grain pellets I normally shoot and found the max size slug that would work in my magazines. So I have a 50 grain hollow point slug option that shoots pretty good from my gun now. It's not a fix all but it might give you more ammo options.

Sell it and get a Bully in 30 cal, as Jorgo recommends. It still is a heavy bull pup at 10.13 lbs, but the majority of the weight is more rearward. Out of the box brand new it’ll get you 16 shots at “optimum speeds” as quoted by Hatsan. Mine came hot at 1076 FPS using the 44.75 grain Vortex pellets.

Watch the SHOOTER 1721 videos on YouTube and the ones put out by Airguns of Arizona first, before you buy the Bully.

Bigragu - wow that is really smoking fast! How do you find the accuracy of the Bully? I am considering one in .45

NE, Imjust want to make it clear that I’m not an expert on Bully guns from Hatsan, I’m just going by what I’ve observed- I know two folks that own the 45 cal, and I don’t hear two many high praises from them on that caliber in the Bully. I know one owner of a 35 caliber that said it’s not a plinking gun or one to not get on target right away, due to pellet cost. I know of a 25 cal owner who thinks he should’ve gotten a 30 cal instead. Now the few of us that own the 30, there’s no complaints at all coming from us, except the fact that whatever the pellet in a 30 cal hits, it damages it pretty bad. I’m not asking about live game, either, I’m talking steel, wood, etc.

1000+ FPS is what hatsan spec’d the velocities to be on this gun using lead pellets, and they weren’t lying. It is no way backyard friendly. You’ll have to tame it down with one of the many moderator makes out there, for a 30 cal. The magazine lock down is superb, and I’ve never had a jam or misalignment with the pellet probe to the magazine.

Lastly, the two YouTube vids I’ve seen of folks showcasing this gun, they’ve used the 30 caliber. Watch SHOOTER1721 on YouTube target shooting with it. That’s what sold me on buying this gun

As far as pellets fitting the magazine you might want to try some Predator Polymags. I have 3 guns with mags that Polymags WON'T fit so I took to clipping off enough of the tip so they will fit. IT WORKS, in my guns anyway with little or NO appreciable changes in accuracy. (FX Royale 500, FX Boss, Hatsan BT65. 25) I can hit a dime @ 80 yds using these. Won't help your other complaints but might give you another ammo option. Sorry I don't have any in .35 or I'd send you some.

Not as much as I should have and that’s on me. While I’m not crazy about this gun I can make it work for something. If anything else I will shoot things off a bench at 125 yards for fun.... should have done more research and that’s on me. The problem I have with this gun is that it the magazine does not accept “true” hunting rounds... this gun foot pound wise should be able to take coyotes and the like but not with the two domed shaped pellets the magazines accept... the good air venturi slugs that are ideal for this type of hunting and game simply don’t work in the magazine... and they should....
