Why no slugs allowed for most 100yd airgun benchrest?

I think it would be a crying shame if the main event at EBR (100 yard BR) allowed slugs to be used ever!

However I can see a seperate unrestricted "projectile" 100 yard BR class helping to develop "slug" design and performance in all guns, but we really don't want the top competitors moving to that class and ignoring the "diablo" event do we?

Honestly I prefer a bit of the historical aspect by sticking to pellets. Sticking with pellets also helps to reduce cost a little and reduce barriers to entry.

Moving to slugs might also require a change in distance. I can find 100 yards to shoot relatively easily. Make it longer and I have no idea where I might practice, possibly taking me out of the game.

I’m struggling to see how shooting a different shape projectile makes something any more complicated. If the rules allows slugs...you don’t loose the ability to shoot pellets if you want. Would guys shooting pellets be at a disadvantage? Maybe...but that remains to be seen.

Pellets were designed to shoot short distances...and they do so very well. The problem is that everyone wants to shoot them far nowadays...and they are a poor tool for the job. I believe Scott’s intent in this thread was simply to question why a supposed long range precision airgun event shoots pellets which happen to be the worst tool available to an airgun at long distance...and it’s a very good question. It no longer has anything to do with safety. Most of these (maybe all) events are shot at firearm ranges.

The idea that you would need a longer distance to shoot slugs does not make sense. Why not shoot at 100y and actually have a tool that does a better job at being a precision instrument. If a slug was the same relative accuracy at 100y..,the only difference would be that you might actually be more able to shoot by wind reading than the methods employed currently with pellets. Don’t shoot further ...just shoot better at the same distance.

I remember when fuel injection was taking over as the means of fuel distribution on a car. The old mechanics that knew carburetors were scared to death. Nobody wants to go back to a carburetor today.

You could simply put a maximum weight on each caliber that correlated to the normal pellet being used to keep High Power Pete from showing up.

If Daystate had a slug gun dialed in to perfection....the EBR rules might be different. The rules were crafted to sell the products available....which used to be FX. There are always folks that want things to stay the same. That will never change. 😀

Which slug shaped """pellets""" are you referring to, or do you maintain that slugs are pellets? I'm not familiar with the different ones if there are any, but I don't keep up on this type of thing so I wouldn't know anyway.

Seeing photos or links would help me visualise what you are getting at.

Another point to consider when adding another event is time. At this point the events take 4 days to get 175ish shooters through all the events. It is a huge logistical endeavor to put one of these matches on of this size. It may be that to satisfy the desires of a few, you would have to cut back on the more popular events. Trying to squeeze in enough time to make sure all events are a positive experience and not feel like your rushed.

Even as it is now most big events fill up very quickly and you have to be waiting by the computer to get your registration in when it opens. Should they add more days to get it done ? Cut back the number of shooters ?

Not adding more events, just allow any projectile shape shot from an airgun. The best type of projectile for the given distance and caliber will end up becoming the norm.

That’s interesting. So I’m thinking slugs should be legal for FT and also for 25M and 50Y BR. Leave it up to the shooter to determine what works best in his gun at the match distance. I like it!

They already are legal, but at <20fpe, round nose Diabolos tend to be more accurate out to 50m so that's what most everyone uses at those distances.

If they group as good as pellets then you only have to be half as good at judging the wind. Since they have have half the blow at 100, a mis judge in the wind is half of what it is with a pellet. 🤘 Run what you brung kind of shoot out, not so sure it's gonna fly. Lol worth a "shot" though..😀

If you are only half as good at judging the wind, that means there are others that are twice as good as you, so you are still not likely to win.

What would happen is that average scores would go up some, but there will be a little less luck involved. The luck of the draw for bench assignments and time of relay will be less of a factor.

Ahhh gotcha, didn’t know slugs were legal in FT. Once someone designs a .177 as accurate as a pellet but with twice the BC it’ll be mandatory if you want to compete on equal footing. But 50Y BR would be a route, slugs over pellets in any sort of wind like we had at EBR last year.

Good one Dave! ;)

Mike,

Wait til you see my baby buck shot pellets I'm working on so I can clear two targets for each shot in speed silo.. 😉

In 25m BR....you can already shoot a projectile with about twice the BC by simply shooting Open or Unlimited class instead of LV. Are those classes less difficult...Of course they are...but it’s still rare to see anyone shoot a perfect score.

In FT you can choose to shoot 20 fpe instead of 12 and pick up a 70 percent gain in BC depending on the pellet you choose.
