Why hardly any love for the HW90/RX?

Im curious as to why I don’t see more discussions or topics on the Beeman RX, RX1, or the HW90? In fact, every time I do see one come up in the classifieds, it doesn’t move. I remember back in the late 80’s, early 90’s when these came out by Beeman, they were the chit! High power, no spring set, ever, fully tuneable with the hand pump and gage(accessories for the gun). It matched right up there with the Theoben gas rammers, and come to find out later Theoben had their hands in the making of the RX.

im just wondering, for a gun with such power and an awesome power plant, why I don’t hear much about them, in any Airgun forum with a sub section for break barrels.

Most complain about the weight and chunky stock, if buying new they are not cheap by any means. Many also get carried away with the pump and scorch/blow seals thinking they can make it any power they wish which is totally incorrect. Any Theoben ram is only meant to fire at what ever max velocity they state and not above!

P.S. Love my Beeman RX2

I love mine, too, lol. Looking back, I should’ve never bought that pump and gage, as back then it was a very high dollar accessory. Then I made the mistake of loaning it to some guy, and he somehow scored up the fill hose off of the pump. Really irked me at the time. Since then, before Beeman closed doors, I sent mine in to be converted to the RX1 from an RX, and to be honest it’s been so long I can’t remember what it involved. I know they put in the “super gas” and I’ve left the internals alone. It’s still running on the same seals thru out.

That thing has a lot of rats and squirrels under it’s belt. So very accurate. I used to plug squirrels in flight as they jumped from tree to tree. My son when he was old enough to shoot, I would set up small rubber bouncy balls, the ones like 1 1/2” in diameter, hanging from a tree limb with fishing line. I would cock it for him, then he’d set up, take aim, and hit the ball. As it was swinging around sideways, I dared him to hit it while swinging, and he did!

Well I just bought the one that was on the GTA classifieds that probably got you thinking about them and noting that they don't sell.

I've never had a gas ram so not sure what to expect but it wasn't hard to find old posts on airgun forums with lots of good things to say about them.

It'll also be my first .20 gun.

A while back, somebody responded to a conversation I started on a forum (gta I think) that gas rams aren't as susceptible to power loss at high altitude as a piston gun powered by a spring. I dunno but I'm gonna find out when it gets here.

The general consensus from reading old posts and asking a buddy who used to own an rx1: they're big, they're heavy, and they're accurate. Sounds alot like my best field target gun and makes me realize I'll put up with just about anything if it comes with exceptional and consistent accuracy. Kinda like my Veteran, putting up with the ho-hum stock is worth the accuracy.

I think the incredible power of PCPs these days has kinda put all the magnum springer type guns on the back burner.

I for one have fell victim to the PCP craze the last couple years but I still love the simplicity of grabbing a gun some pellets and heading to the woods without all the stuff it take for the pneumatic guns .

I just bought the godfather of those RX guns in .20 also. It will be my 4th .20 cal I own!

Beeman Crow Magnum from 2004 and I believe it was the last year for the beeman rebranding of the Theoben Eliminator.

Should be here Friday and im stoked about getting it in my hands. Especially since JSB has the new heavies in .20 coming out this month!

@ Franklink- So did you get that one from Soft tail something, or Don from GTA? If so, you got a beautiful rifle for a great price. I was hoping Don would hang on to it, just like marauders, lol. If I see someone selling a Marauder that’s out of the norm beautiful with an aftermarket stock, I do all I can to talk him out of selling the darn thing. Well, I’m sure that RX went to a good home.

@ Chuckhunter- a good friend, ex neighbor of mine, the one who got me into adult air rifles back in the late 80’s has that same theoben you’re picking up, in a 22 cal. That thing is a tough, hard shooting, but at the same time gorgeous rifle. My neighbor quit shooting his Airguns after I moved away, l believe, and not too long ago I hit him up with a how much would you sell it for? $1200 including the thousands of pellets he has for it, the beeman pell sizer, the scope, and all the beeman doo dad accessories on it. Don’t know if that’s a great price, but I get the feeling his numbers high enough so he doesn’t sell it, lol. I’m actually hoping he gets into PCP’s, so we can rekindle those Friday night rat hunts we did every Friday after work..

So, what’s funny is, he owned an R1, one of the originals, when I met him. It was a 177, and highly accurate. After seeing him hit acorn balls off of trees at 30 yards I had to have one, but instead bought a deluxe R10 in 177. Well, the rat hunts went fine, but I kept noticing over 50% of the ones we hit still were able to limp off about 5-10’ before falling into the creek. I wanted something that would stop them like a car hitting a large oak tree. Dead right there. Beeman just came out with the RX, and I went one size up in caliber to the 20, for a mix of high velocity and foot pound energy vs a 22. Back then we were all about FPS and could care less about energy, lol.

Sure enough, the first night out with that gun, the first rat I shot, he stopped immediately the minute I hit him, curled up, died, and became the midnight snack for his fellow buddy rats. My neighbor stood there with his mouth gapped open, and shortly after, he had the Theoben eliminator, topped off with a Bushnell 6-18 scope. His rats not only stopped instantly from the shot, but they also got thrown backwards a couple of feet and when they landed, no movement. Knowing what I know now, I should’ve gotten the RX in a 22.

Currently, using H&N crow magnums, by RX1 in 20 caliber is getting 815-820 FPS. If a 22 would have gotten 775-800 FPS, I would have been okay with that, like I said, knowing what I know now.

Well i am a owner of a rx2 in 20cal. It was bought for me for xmas by my girl. I am the 3rd owner. the 1st must had it serviced because it had the green breach seal but either the 1st or 2nd owner must of let go the barrel because when it came home at 10yds it shot like 6 inches high. when I finally got that settled i decided to let a little air out because I used to have another rx2 20cal before this one and it was smooth, easy to cock as all heck. but my latest one wasn't. So 2 taps on the schrader valve and too much air came out. sent it to a friend who made a fill probe that fits on a pcp pump and he even got it back to where I thought I wanted it along with a trigger tune, clean up and a replacement of a piston seal. It still a lot of recoil, still hard to cock but for only at 35yds, she's pretty damn accurate for a hunter. but nothing compared to my old one. I just wish my old lady's nephew just tell me where or who he sold it too. freaking junkies are scum, but that is another story for another time. plus i only had one type of pellet to use...the h&n cuda's. I want to try some of the new jsb's when they come. i also would like to try the h&n FTT's too. A friend of mine is sending me some 20cal cp's though and I can't wait to try them too. A member on here sent me a few a while ago but the testing fell through do to a bent barrel so i'll see how these go when they come in

Bigragu, yes I got the laminate rx2 in .20 from Don on GTA. I agree that it's a pretty gun, and feel like I got it for a good price, especially because he's including the fittings to play with the pressure. Now I've just gotta do the nervous wait while it's at the mercy of the shipping companies. Whether I've got one coming or going, I always worry about it until it gets where it's supposed to be.

That’s awesome shooting right there ScottLeeman! I gotta pull mine out and shoot some groups with it. Will groups on a squirrels head count?

All kidding aside, and I’m not saying this to say or try and boost up a gas ram vs a pcp, but it just dawned on me, as I made the joking comment about groups on a squirrels head, but thinking back this past year, I’ve had more squirrels run off wounded with my PCP guns(Marauder 25 and PRod in 22) than I’ve ever did with my RX 20 cal. Maybe it’s because shot for shot I’ve shot my PCP at more this past year at critters, but back in my RX days I had more squirrels around my property. I remember thumping a male from behind, when he was on my roof thumping a female, and he dropped right there on top of my solar panels. Didn’t even budge, as the female ran off. Even my 10 year old son at the time, would hoist that gun on my shoulder, use me as the shooting stick to balance that RX beast, and the squirrels he nailed fell down onto my German shepherds, who were clawing at the bottom of the tree, frothing at the mouth.

Dont get me wrong PCP fans, as I am now one of those, but apples to apples, a Marauder pellet to the chest, at least 25% of the squirrels have run off to die somewhere else. My RX to the chest, 90% of them dropped, and either squirmed in place where I’d put them down with a second shot, dropped for dead, or fell to my waiting Shepard’s to be mince meat. I want all you RX owners to reflect on that, and tell me it was just coincidence that the 20 caliber RX thumped them harder than a standard 860 FPS 22 cal. Not a 30 cal or larger, just a 22 that’s in the 850-900 FPS range.

Give me a minute, to don my flame suit on, lol

This has to be the most underrated break barrel. Absolute dynamite in the field, you can easily smash bunnies out to 50 yards. Comparatively speaking, if you can handle the weight and cocking effort there is no equal for the price point. I used to hunt with a Theoben TB90 all the time, until I realized how rare it was:
