Why doesn't FX "do" .177 as well as the other calibers(.22, .25, .30)

FX offers many different barrel/liner lengths(380mm, 500mm, 600mm, 700mm) in different styles(Superior/Super Heavy) in .22, .25, and .30 calibers. There are many posts about great performance shooting slugs and/or pellets using different combos of the aforementioned barrels in many FX guns. 

And then there's the .177 caliber- Only available barrel length(if you can find one) is 500mm(although I believe I have seen a few 600mm) length and only available with regular STX liner. Most of the FX .177 posts are of frustrating or subpar performance.

Seems odd that FX has more or less "neglected" the .177 market. Maybe their current barrel technology doesn't perform well in .177? Who knows, but with the all the field target shooters and increased interest in .177 slug shooting(not to mention all the general .177 enthusiasts), it would seem like they would try a little harder to offer a descent product to get a piece of that marketshare.

One thing for sure is they have not updated their 177 barrel in a very long time from what I can tell but seems to shoot both pellets and slugs fine. From what I read the STX .177 barrel is sensitive to rubber oring placement or just add a carbon sleeve, could be the barrel is so thin that vibration is causing problems. Watched many UK videos with STX .177 that are absolutely silly accurate.

When I got my early Impact-X in .25, back in mid 2018, I ordered a .177 barrel kit with it. I put it on, for a short while, once and simply turned the power wheel from Max down to 1 and it immediately shot the JSB .177 10.34 domes in one hole cloverleaf groups at 50 yards. Probably good enough? Had pics but don't know what I did with them. 

Yes, now that the .177 slugs are out I would expect them to bring out a .177 slug barrel so I guess you all have something gripe about until they do? ;^) But remember these things do take some time to werq out though. Until the slugs got here there was no need to do anything with the already extremely accurate STX .177 pellet liner that was available.

So, superior liners are out and the gripe is over before it even got to be much of anything. How sad it is. ;^)

I have ordered a "special" Maverick, basically a VP but in .177 and with a 480 CC carbon fiber tank, i was also apprehensive about the STX barrel so i contacted FX and asked if the Maverick really only came with STX when the new M3 come with the Superior liner.

And i was told not to worry my gun would come with a 600 mm superior liner.



Message: I have preordered a Maverick thru Gunpit in Denmark, but have just realized that in .177 it is supplied with the regular STX liner, but in all other calibers the Maverick come with the superior liner. Shouldent this fine weapon also have a superior liner for .177 caliber, it is there for the new M3 Impact with 600 mm barrel which is what gunpit have ordered ( Maverich VP with .177 and 480 cc carbon bottle. ) I am hoping gunpit have misunderstood something, or i will probably have to upgrade the liner when i get the gun some time this summer. .177 has been updated with superior liner. You do not need to change when you got your rifle.

I am planning to try some slugs in the .177 caliber, but really i would prefer to do that dance in .22 or .25, but that will have to wait a little while.

As i understand it the superior liners are okay with lighter slugs, so no absolute must have a dedicated slug kit if you dont need to extra hitting power of a heavier slug.

Like Centercut said, the old .177 smooth twist barrels are excellent. My Royal is a really accurate gun out to 60 yards. I wish they would use those thick solid barrels like on my Royal, only on something like the Crown or Impacts. It’s going to be fun to see what comes down the road in .177, it’s a great caliber in my opinion. I really like a rifle with no recoil, so you can watch the whole shot from pulling the trigger to the hole appearing on the target.

Hmmmm. Thanks for the input guys. I musta missed all the posts about great accuracy from FX .177s. And all the high placings of FX guns in FT competitions. Must be MUUUCH more common overseas.

FX .177 guns, barrels, and liners are WAAAY less available from the usual airgun suppliers in the U.S. compared with .22, .25, and .30. Also WAAAY more options for those calibers.

Good to hear a report about a new machine to make .177s. Perhaps FX is indeed ramping up .177 production in the not too distant future

Recently I purchased Impact MK2 in 177, I asked FX USA about liner. They said its Superior Liner.

I have some piledrivers 21gr and JSB beast 16.2.

I tried Piledriver with a very little expectation and surprisingly its shooting well 35 yards (Reg 155bar, Power wheel Max)

Interesting seeing the groups with jsb beast and slugs at 35-40yds, wondering if the posters shot them beyond that distance. 

I love my fx dreamline classic 177 because of the similarities to Anschutz 54 sporters stock design and the trigger. After shooting many different pellets through it the jsb monster 13.43gr is really the only pellet the gun likes at high velocity. I didn't buy the gun to coast little lightweight target pellets downrange at 800fps, I would of bought a target rifle if that was the purpose.

The person who posted the groups with the beasts should test them at 50yds and see what happens, out of my gun they corkscrew everytime past 40yds, it's possible to miss a target completely at 50yds.

As far as slugs go depending on who's they are they either have wild velocity variations, corkscrew or have 1-2 filers out of 5 shot groups everytime. The current production barrel doesn't shoot slugs very well at all at least Griffins or Nielson.

As it is the 13.43gr jsb at 953fps makes for a great air rifle, I've shot prairie dogs with it in a stiff wind out to 40yds and competed and won a 50yd for score target match.

The barrel has a very narrow scope of application, I'll complain about a couple more things while I'm here, on the classic dreamline the inability to adjust the valve pressure and hammer spring tension without removing the gun from the stock is stupid, both could have been easily done without ruining the esthetics of the rifle.

NSA 12.5 slugs out of 500mm superlite barrel from crown MK2. 5 shoot group at 34 yards/30M and the one on the bullseye had major wind shift, 4 in 1 hole when the wind is consistent.

6 shot group and wind picked up/I pulled, also 4 in one hole. The center dot on my reticle almost cover the bullseye so definitely could be me.

I can do the same with even crosman pellets if there is no wind, FX 177 guns/barrels are absolutely more accurate then I can shoot.

That's max distance i have shot for now, Definitely will try 40-50 yards, I was planning to machine LW barrel for my Impact. I will wait until i check accuracy at 50 yards

The most viable playground for the .177 is FT. My guess, Frederik doesn't see that as a very lucrative market, and is focusing on the HP, long distance BR stuff, and the folks who want super adjustable rifles.

FX is a business model still evolving, but it seems to be much more focused on innovation and testing, as compared to a more natural growth of the traditional air rifle. Just my opinion, and my wife says I'm always wrong.

I would LOVE for FX to come out with a 700mm .177 slug liner! I had to machine an Alfa Precision barrel to shoot the slugs I want out of my Maverick. The extra couple of inches sure would be nice to have for the 20+ grain slug varieties. The AP barrel is a laser with the Griffin 22 grain slugs, but I haven't tested it yet with the new NSA 20.5 grain slugs. My Maverick can make over 50 fpe in .177, so a 700mm .177 slug liner would be SWEET for slinging some 23/24 grain slugs! I have another AP barrel that does well with those, but I'm hesitant to machine it for the Maverick, since it is 16mm OD, and will add quite a bit of weight to the gun. The other AP barrel I did machine is 15mm OD and still adds quite a bit of weight to the gun at 25" long. A 700mm liner sure would solve some problems for me at least!
