Who makes your favorite open sights?

I prefer notch and post handgun sights for short range pesting because they allow much faster target acquisition. I bought an Artemis PP700S-A for this purpose, but the factory rear sight is crap and only adjusts with windage, no elevation. So I went shopping for quality sights and ended up with an adjustable rear sight by CZ, which is very high quality Of course it did not fit so I milled the rear dovetail to match the sight. Now the front post was way too short and there are no front sights that fit the milled slot on the PP700. So I had to make one that was the correct height. That sounds easy, but it wasn't. I had to make holding fixtures as well. I needed to make a bluing tank, which is not a big deal, but the ammonium nitrate sure is. Be careful looking for that stuff. I only wanted 2 kgs, but you are then considered an automatic terrorist.

I keep hearing abour willams and tec sights. Both are bad ass how about sights that come stock on air rifles? Any that stand out as decent straight out of the box?

The Weirauch Globe and notch sights without the fiber optic inserts are really nice, the CZ sights that the now somewhat scarce 634 uses are also nice though I'm not a fan of fiber optic sights-if I'd hung on to my 634 I'd have blacked out the fiber optic parts.

For peep sights? Anschutz or Feinwerkbau with Gehmann iris's. They have been winning olympic medals for years.

I have a Gehmann rear sight and iris, but prefer the Airforce/Merit setup mentioned above.

Those look great, I have seen a few of them used by guys who love them. I haven't had a chance to mess with them though. What are the similarities/differences you have found?

My all-time favorite open “notch” sight is the model fitted to Diana air rifles in the 70’s and 80’s. Big sight, beautiful and solid all-metal construction, smooth and precise finger-knob adjustments, and the famous rotating notch plate. It has four differently-shaped notches to mate up with your favorite front tunnel sight element.

For small sporting peep sights, the Parker-Hale PH 16 series makes all others look like toys. It’s a shame those were made for so few guns! Unless you own a Webley Mk 3 underlever, you’ve probably never seen one.

For more elaborate aperture sights, it’s hard to beat the classic old Anschutz models. They show up on Ebay and auction sites all the time, and fit anything with close to 11mm scope grooves. Beautifully-made and very precise adjustments. Note that the all-steel “universal” models - which cost twice as much as the sights with cast-alloy bodies - are the bargain these days; most sellers price both types about the same. Any German match sight will open to door to the world of adjustable-iris accessories which is quite amazing!
